Grimes Bio

Grimes is the stage name of Canadian artist, singer, songwriter, and record producer Claire Elise Boucher (/bue/ boo-SHAY; born March 17, 1988). Boucher is best recognized for her work under the moniker Grimes. Her early work has been described as ranging from “lo-fi R&B” to “futuristic dance-pop,” and she has combined influences from electronic music, hip-hop, and rock into her sound. Her lyrics frequently touch on topics related to science fiction as well as feminist ideology. She has released five albums recorded in a studio setting.

Grimes was born and reared in Vancouver before moving to Montreal later in life. In the late 2000s, she began releasing music under her own name independently, and in 2010, she released two albums under the label Arbutus Records: Geidi Primes and Halfaxa. After that, she became a member of the 4AD label, and in 2012, she released her third album under that label, titled Visions. This led to her rise to stardom.

The electronic album Visions, which features the hits “Genesis” and “Oblivion,” was awarded the Juno Award for Electronic Album of the Year by the Canadian music industry. After this, in 2015, she released her fourth studio album titled Art Angels, which was met with widespread acclaim from music critics and was chosen the greatest album of the year by a number of magazines. The year 2020 saw the release of her fifth studio album, titled Miss Anthropocene.

Grimes is involved in other creative endeavors than music, including serving as a judge on the music competition game show Alter Ego and having a voice role in the 2020 action role-playing computer game Cyberpunk 2077. Claire Elise Boucher, better known as Grimes, was born on March 17, 1988, in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she was raised. She is of German-Ukrainian, Italian, and French Canadian (including Québécois) ancestry.

Her family is originally from Canada. She was brought up in a Catholic household and attended a Catholic elementary and high school. Sandy Garossino, her mother, is a former Crown prosecutor and arts champion; Maurice Boucher, her father, is a former banker who works “in the business side of biotech.” Grimes received her diploma from Lord Byng Secondary School in 2006 and moved from Vancouver to Montreal in order to enroll at McGill Institution with the intention of majoring in neuroscience and the Russian language. However, she left the institution at the beginning of 2011 before completing her degree.

It appears from the timestamps on her first Myspace website that she started writing songs under the moniker Grimes around the year 2007. She was able to put three different types of music under her performer name on MySpace at the time, thus this influenced her decision. She referred to “grime” for all three, despite the fact that she was unfamiliar with the grime music genre. Grimes has no formal training in either music or visual art.

Geidi Primes was Grimes’ first studio album, and it was released in January 2010. It was a concept album and was inspired by the Dune trilogy. After that, in October of the same year, she released her second album, titled Halfaxa.[28] After the publication of Halfaxa, she started giving concerts outside of Montreal and began actively promoting her music in public.’

2011 saw the release of five songs that were included on Grimes’ half of the split 12-inch record she did with d’Eon, titled Darkbloom. This release was made available by both Arbutus and Hippos in Tanks. Grimes supported Lykke Li on her North American tour beginning in May 2011, and in August 2012, her debut album was re-released by No Pain in Pop Records, this time in CD and vinyl format for the very first time. In 2011, she worked together with DJ/producer Blood Diamonds on a project.

After extensive touring and receiving excellent feedback for her previous two albums as well as her contribution to Darkbloom, Grimes inked a recording contract with the record label 4AD in January 2012. Her third studio album, titled Visions, was released on January 31, 2012 in Canada by way of Arbutus Records, on February 21, 2012 in the United States by way of 4AD, and on various dates in March 2012 elsewhere in the world. is regarded as Grimes’ breakthrough album because it appeared on the best-of lists compiled by a lot of magazines at the conclusion of the year.

In 2013, the publication NME placed it on their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. At the Juno Awards, Visions was recognized as the recipient of the Electronic Album of the Year award, and Grimes was put into consideration for the Breakthrough Artist of the Year award. Additionally, during the 2013 Webby Awards, Grimes was given the award for Artist of the Year. Pitchfork voted “Oblivion” the best song of 2012, and Emily Kai Bock and Grimes directed the music video for the single, which was also produced. “Oblivion” was the second single released from the album.

In 2014, Pitchfork placed “Oblivion” at the top of their list of the 200 best tracks released in the past 10 years up to that point. Grimes claimed in interviews that followed the album’s release that she was given a severe deadline by which to have her third album finished much before it was complete, which resulted in her recording the bulk of Visions while she was secluded in her Montreal flat for three weeks in a row. Notably, during this intensive recording session, she went without sleep or food for nine days, covered the windows in blackout drapes because she could not produce music as easily during the day, and did “tons of amphetamines.”

This was all done in order to get the best possible recordings.” She said that the process of writing was “equally enjoyable and tortuous,” and that she felt that the difficulties of the process contributed to the work’s success. Grimes embarked on the Visions Tour in 2012, and it lasted until 2014. Born Gold, Myths, Elite Gymnastics, and Ami Dang served as the tour’s supporting performers.

In March of 2012, Grimes collaborated with Tim Lafontaine of Cop Car Bonfire and went by the name Membrain for their musical output. They came out with an extended play titled “Sit Back, Rewind.” In the month of May 2012, Grimes was featured on the song “Phone Sex” by Blood Diamonds. During the month of July 2012, Grimes participated in the Full Flex Express Canadian Train Tour as a supporting act for Skrillex and Diplo. Grimes made her debut on American television during the episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon that aired in August 2012.
