Kerri Lee Green is an American actress, best known for her roles in The Goonies, Summer Rental, and Lucas. In addition, she directed and co-wrote the film Bellyfruit in 1999. Green is best known for her roles as a young teen in a string of teen flicks in the 1980s, including Summer Rental, in which she starred as the daughter of a stressed-out air traffic controller. The role of cheerleader-turned-adventurer Andrea “Andy” Carmichael, which she performed in the 1985 film The Goonies, was her first significant role in the entertainment industry.
She garnered significant critical praise for her portrayal in Lucas, in which she acted as the center of a love triangle between the roles of Corey Haim and Charlie Sheen. However, her subsequent film, “Three for the Road,” which was released in 1987 and starred Charlie Sheen and Alan Ruck, was not nearly as successful. Later on, Green made an appearance in an episode of In the Heat of the Night in 1990, performed in an independent film titled Blue Flame, and played the role of Paul Reiser’s character’s secretary in two episodes of the television sitcom Mad About You. All of these roles were in 1990.
Green eventually co-founded a film production company, Independent Women Artists, with Bonnie Dickenson. With Dickenson, she co-wrote and directed the cinematic version of a play about adolescent pregnancy called Bellyfruit. Even though it’s been almost four decades since the first showing of Richard Donner’s “Goonies,” the bond between the group of pre-teen misfits who stumble upon a pirate ship off the coast of their Oregon town still holds strong.
In the immediate aftermath of his win at the Academy Awards, which thrilled the audience, an ecstatic Ke Huy Quan entered the press room to the sound of yet another standing ovation. When asked how his younger self would react to the news that he had won an Oscar, the actor became reflective and sentimental about his past life.
“My younger self would not know all of the struggles that I went through to be here,” Quan said. “I had to work really hard to get here.” “Because he was just having the time of his life being a kid, being on the set, on a pirate ship, going down a waterslide. The ‘Goonies’ actor Corey Feldman, who is also one of my siblings, contacted me just before the night began. I was talking to Kerri Green and of course tonight Jeff Cohen, who is my entertainment lawyer, is here tonight with me. Sean, Josh, and Martha [Plimpton] all reached out to make contact. We are constantly linked. We’re family forever. Goonies never say die!” Quan also connected with his former “Indiana Jones” co-star Harrison Ford, who was on stage to hand the actor his Oscar for best Actor, as well as the director Steven Spielberg.
“During one of the commercial breaks I ran up to Steven Spielberg, and he gave me a big hug,” Quan added. “He’s one of my favorite directors.” “He encircled me with his arms and told me, ‘Ke, you are now an Oscar-winning actor.'” Hearing him say that meant the world to me.” The filmmaker was nominated for his work on “The Fabelmans.”
But the greatest scene from backstage at the Academy Awards was when Quan described what it meant to receive this prestigious award with his real name on it, not the prior identity he used while he was suffering. When Ke Huy Quan accepted the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor on Sunday, one of the people he tearfully thanked was Jeff Cohen, “my Goonies brother for life.” Cohen played Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen alongside Quan’s Richard “Data” Wang in Richard Donner’s beloved 1985 adventure comedy before becoming an entertainment lawyer and, many years later, inking Quan’s contract for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Cohen isn’t the only Goonie still in touch with Quan, though. The newly-minted Oscar winner told reporters in the press room on Sunday that he received congratulatory messages from every single one of his old co-stars, including Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, and Martha Plimpton. “I adore each and every one of them. Every single one of them was so delighted,” he remarked. “We’re family forever. Goonies never say die.”
“When I first began, when I was a youngster, I went by my birth name, which is Ke Huy Quan. I remember when things became really rough my boss told me that maybe it would be better if you had an American-sounding name. And I was so desperate for a job that I would do anything… When I decided to get back into acting, the very first thing that I wanted to do was to go back to my birth name. Tonight, to see Ariana open that envelope and speak the words “Ke Huy Quan,” it was a moment for me that is really one of a kind and unforgettable. The first picture that I had in my head was my mom.”
