Ana Gabriel is the stage name of Mexican singer and songwriter Maria Guadalupe Araujo Yong, who was born on December 10, 1955, and is better known by her birth name. She has had a lengthy career during which she has performed a variety of styles of music, most notably Latin pop, Latin ballad, and Ranchera, and she has been honored with a number of prizes. As a result, she has been called La Diva de América and La Luna de América.
Twenty albums recorded in a studio, three albums recorded live, and fifteen compilation albums were among Gabriel’s discography as of 2013. There are seven Gabriel singles that have reached number one on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. These hits include “Ay Amor,” “Es Demasiado Tarde,” and “Quién Como T.” Gabriel has three albums that have reached number one on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart.
Her body of work has garnered her a great number of honors and awards, including a nomination for the Grammy Award, four nominations for the Latin Grammy Award, thirteen Lo Nuestro Awards, and awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. In 2006, she was presented with the Excellence Award at the Lo Nuestro Awards.
On December 10, 1955, Mara Guadalupe Araujo Yong was born in Guamchil, which is located in the state of Sinaloa in Mexico. She did not have any formal training in singing, therefore she attributes her maternal grandfather Roberto Yong, who was born in China and immigrated to the United States, as being the only person who ever taught her how to sing. When she was just six years old, she had her theatrical debut singing “Regalo A Dios” by José Alfredo Jiménez. She uprooted her life and started a new one in Tijuana, in the state of Baja California.
In 1977, when she was 21 years old, she made her recording debut with the song “Compréndeme.”She performed an orchestral version of the pop-power ballad song “Ay Amor,” which was later released as a single in its album version; it climbed to the top position in Mexico, throughout Ibero-America, and on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart for 14 consecutive weeks. In 1987, Ana Gabriel won third place at the OTI Festival, which was celebrated in Lisbon, Portugal.
Her debut album, Tierra de Nadie, was published by Gabriel in 1988. The following year, in 1989, she released Pecado Original, which was somewhat successful on the charts. Her album “Quién Como T” from 1990 established her as a significant figure in the Mexican music industry. After eight months, she released her live CD titled “En Vivo,” which included her impressive stage act and spawned multiple successes, including “Hice Bien Quererte,” “Proposed,” and “Solamente una Vez.”
Throughout the decade of the 1990s, Gabriel published an album on an almost annual basis. She demonstrated her talent as an interpreter of a wide range of musical forms, ranging from lambada to mariachi to romantic ballads to pop music. She is a singer who may be described as diverse. She also refined her skills as a songwriter and a producer, and in 1991 she released the album Mi México, a pop album with ranchera influences and mariachi backing.
This singular synthesis of musical eras and aesthetics was also represented in the songs, which were entirely penned by Gabriel. In contrast to the passive and traditional picture of women in older songs, her lyrics portrayed strong women who were actively participating in their romantic relationships. In addition, the CD featured a tribute to Juan Gabriel (no relation), who is considered to be the most popular singer-songwriter in Mexico.
Gabriel achieved a number one hit in 1991 with the duet “Cosas del Amor,” which she sang with Mexican-American pop singer Vikki Carr. “Cosas del Amor” was recorded by the duo. Gabriel was presented with the Lo Nuestro Award for Song of the Year in 1992 as a result of the success of the record. Gabriel was honored with multiple accolades at the same awards ceremony, including being named Pop Female Artist of the Year and Regional Mexican Female Artist of the Year.
Additionally, the album Mi México was recognized as the Regional Mexican Album of the Year. The Lo Nuestro Awards presented Gabriel with the trophy for “Best Pop Female Performer” in the year 1993. The following year, she made an appearance as a guest performer on Plácido Domingo’s album, De Mi Alma Latina, which had been nominated for a Grammy.
Vivencias, a pop-oriented album, was released by her in 1996. After this, in 1997, she released an album called Con un Mismo Corazón, which featured traditional ranchera music and was an album that she had written and produced herself. The duet on the album’s title tune that she performs with Vicente Fernández, one of the most prolific and popular ranchera singers in Mexican music history, is particularly interesting.
Burr wrote the following about the duet: “The beauty here lies in the melding of two great voices—Gabriel’s husky sensuality and Fernandez’s powerful, understated expressions—set against a 25-piece symphony.” Who is Burr?[source: missing citation]In 1998, Gabriel released another live CD titled En la Plaza de Toros Mexico. This one was a boxed set containing 30 tracks. During the same year, she journeyed to Miami to record her album Soy Como Soy with the well-known producer Emilio Estefan Jr. The end product was a ranchera album with a pop flavor that was certified gold in the Latin music market and contributed to Gabriel winning the Ritmo Latino Music Award for Female Pop Artist of the Year in the year 2000.
Gabriel made his return to the mariachi love ballad style with the publication of Eternamente in the year 2000. The album included only guitar accompaniment. During the same year, she also participated alongside a number of other prominent figures in Mexican music in an Independence Day television special referred to as Viva Mexico. This program was a celebration of Mexican music as well as Mexican history. In 2001, Gabriel published an album titled Huelo a Soledad. On this album, Gabriel once again struck a balance between the more traditional sounds of Eternamente and more modern pop songs, cappella numbers, and dance music.
In 2002, Gabriel released the album Sagitario, which went on to become a multi-platinum seller. In the same year, she was awarded the Billboard Latin Music Estrella Award for her contributions to the Latin music industry, she gave a performance at a tribute concert for Vicente Fernandez that was sponsored by the Latin Music Awards, and she took part in the ninth annual Las Cruces International Mariachi Concert and Festival in New Mexico. All of these accomplishments took place in that same year. She had been invited to perform at the tenth annual Christmas Mariachi Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, which was to take place in December of that year; however, she was not granted a work visa and was not allowed admission into the United States.
