Christopher Francis Ocean is a well-known American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He was born Christopher Edwin Breaux on October 28, 1987, in the United States. His compositions are recognized by music reviewers for incorporating avant-garde techniques and lyrics that are contemplative and elliptical in nature. Ocean has received several awards during his career, including two Grammy Awards and a Brit Award for International Male Solo Artist. Additionally, both of Ocean’s studio albums have been included on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Before becoming a member of the hip-hop group Odd Future in 2010, Ocean started his career in the music industry working as a ghostwriter. The year after that, he published his debut mixtape under the moniker Nostalgia, Ultra, and as a direct result of its success, Def Jam Recordings offered him a recording deal. His first studio album, the idiosyncratic and genre-bending Channel Orange, had R&B and soul music influences. The album Channel Orange was not only nominated for Album of the Year but also won the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the Grammy Awards in 2013. Additionally, one of the album’s songs, “Thinkin’ Bout You,” was nominated for Record of the Year. In 2013, Time magazine included him on their list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
In 2016, after a break of four years, Ocean produced a video album named Endless to satisfy the responsibilities he had contractually agreed to with Def Jam. Blonde was Ocean’s second studio album, and it was self-released the day after Endless was made available to the public. Pitchfork picked Blonde as the finest album of the 2010s decade and it enhanced Frank Ocean’s experimental musical style. Blonde was placed #1 on the list. It was his first album to debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, and the Recording Industry Association of America awarded it platinum certification.
Beginning in 2017, Ocean began releasing occasional singles, working as a photographer for publications, launching the fashion company Homer, and establishing Homer Radio. In addition, he founded Homer Radio. Ocean relocated to Los Angeles in 2006 in order to pursue a career in the music industry. To make ends meet, he worked at a variety of fast-food and service jobs. In less than three years, he established himself as a composer under the moniker Lonny Breaux. He got the first name ‘Lonny’ from his grandpa called Lionel, with whom Ocean spent a lot of time when he was a boy.
He got the surname ‘Breaux’ from his grandfather’s maiden name. Following the signing of a publishing agreement, Ocean began writing songs for a variety of musicians, including Justin Bieber, Beyonce, John Legend, and Brandy. In a subsequent interview, Ocean discussed his employment during the period, saying, “There was a point where I was composing for other people, and it would have been comfortable to continue to do that and enjoy that income stream and the anonymity.” However, this is not the reason why I left my old school and my family behind.
He went by the stage name Frank Ocean, which he derived from both the singer Frank Sinatra and the movie Ocean’s 11, which was released in the 1960s and featured Sinatra. Not long after that, he became a member of the hip-hop ensemble Odd Future, which was located in Los Angeles. He first met the group in 2009. Ocean’s songwriting was given a new lease of life through his association with Tyler, the Creator, a member of Odd Future. Toward the end of 2009, he made the acquaintance of Tricky Stewart, who was instrumental in assisting him in signing a writing deal with Def Jam Recordings. Because Ocean believed he was being ignored by the company, he decided to create a mixtape on his own without seeking their participation. The resultant mixtape, titled Nostalgia, Ultra, was self-released by Ocean on February 16, 2011, and is available for free download online. The mixtape was praised well by the reviewers.
The subject matter of the mixtape is centered on personal contemplation, interpersonal relationships, and societal critique. Andrew Noz from NPR described Frank Ocean’s lyrics as “clever and understated…distinguishing him from the competition.” Jonah Weiner, writing for Rolling Stone magazine, referred to Ocean as a “gifted avant-R&B smoothie” in his review. In April 2011, Ocean revealed in an interview that his relationship with Def Jam has improved with the release of the album Nostalgia, Ultra. The mixtape was essential in Ocean’s rise to fame and opened the door for him to work with fellow rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Ocean made her debut in the music video for Tyler, the Creator’s track “She,” which was released in conjunction with Tyler’s first studio album Goblin. His debut performance was with Odd Future at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He joined them later for their first tour on the east coast of the United States, which was also his first performance. Ocean’s record company, Def Jam, made the announcement on May 19, 2011, that it intended to re-release Nostalgia, Ultra as an extended play. In May 2011, the song “Novacane” was made available on iTunes. The EP was supposed to be published the following month, however, it was postponed for an unspecified reason.
Ocean said in June 2011 that he will contribute to the forthcoming album Watch the Throne, which would be a joint effort between Kanye West and Jay-Z. Both “No Church in the Wild” and “Made in America” include Ocean on vocals, and Ocean also contributed to the writing of both songs. The song “Thinkin’ Bout You” was the subject of a leak that occurred on the internet on July 28, 2011. After some time had passed, it became clear that the song had been created by Ocean as a reference track for the first studio album of Roc Nation singer Bridget Kelly. The song was rechristened by Kelly as “Thinking About Forever.” Although a music video for Ocean’s version that was made by High5Collective and premiered in September 2011 was directed by High5Collective, the song was still included in Kelly’s first extended play Every Girl. Frank Ocean made his debut on the cover of a magazine for the very first time in the 75th edition of The Fader, which was published in August 2011.
