Frankie Valli is the stage name of an American musician who was born Francesco Stephen Castelluccio on May 3, 1934. He is most known for being the frontman of the band the Four Seasons, who began performing under that name in 1960. He is famous for having a lead falsetto voice that is very strong. When he was just seven years old, his mother brought him to watch a young Frank Sinatra perform at the Paramount Theater in Manhattan, New York City. This experience sparked an interest in him to pursue a career in singing. One of his first influences musically was a vocalist by the name of “Texas” Jean Valli, and he took his stage name from this artist. Barbering was his job of choice until he could make a living off of his music alone.
The year in which Valli was born has been brought into doubt. Prior to a post that was made in 2007 on the Official Frankie Valli Site, which was sponsored by Valli’s current record company, Universal Records, Valli never addressed the subject personally. The year 1937 was employed in a significant portion of the official publicity that had been around his career before. Other sources, including the release by Bear Family Records titled “The Four Lovers”, as well as a mug photo from 1965 that is accessible via The Smoking Gun, all state that the year of his birth was 1934.
In the early 1950s, Valli started his career as a singer by performing with the Variety Trio, which consisted of Nickie DeVito, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Macioci. After hearing Valli sing, the band gave him a guest place when they played, and this was the first time Valli was able to fulfill his dream of singing in front of an audience. At the end of 1952, the Variety Trio split, and Valli, along with Tommy DeVito, joined the house band at The Strand in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Tommy DeVito was also a member of the band. Valli contributed to the band by playing the bass and singing.
He recorded his debut single, “My Mother’s Eyes,” in 1953 under the name “Frankie Valley,” a variant on a moniker he acquired from “Texas” Jean Valli, a female hillbilly singer. The song “My Mother’s Eyes” was first released by Lucky Boy in 1929 and was written by George Jessel. According to what was said in an article published in 2014, “Frankie said in 2010 that Jean took him to meet music publishers, Paul and Dave Kapp, telling them that he was her brother.” As a consequence of this, his very first song was released under the name “Frankie Valley,” and he has been known by this moniker ever since, despite the fact that he ultimately corrected the spelling to match that of “Texas Jean.”
Around this time, Valli and Tommy DeVito quit their jobs as members of the house band at The Strand and joined up with Hank Majewski, Frank Cottone, and Billy Thompson to establish The Variations. The group made a favorable impression on New York record executive Peter Paul in 1956 when they were serving as the backup band for a female vocalist, and as a result, they were given the opportunity to try out for RCA Victor a week later.
After changing their name to the Four Lovers, the band went on to produce a number of singles as well as recordings for an album. They released “You’re the Apple of My Eye” in 1956, which became a moderately successful single. In 1958, Nickie DeVito and Hank Majewski resigned from their positions, and they were succeeded by Nick Macioci, who is now known as Nick Massi, and Hugh Garrity. Massi was a member of the band on an as-needed basis, and Charles Calello would sit in on accordion on occasion. The band maintained their performances up until 1959 when Bob Gaudio was invited to join the lineup. Following a few additional alterations, the band was rechristened “The Four Seasons” in 1960, taking its name from a bowling alley in Union, New Jersey, at which they had performed during an audition at the cocktail bar.
Throughout the 1960s, Gaudio and his songwriting partner at the time, producer Bob Crewe, collaborated with Valli to create solo records, which had different degrees of success. This idea that a famous recording artist would play solo in contrast to his or her own group performances was uncommon in the rock and pop industry, and it may have given other groups and members of other groups the implicit license to follow such a route. It was possible for the group to dominate the charts with both their collective and individual albums, and Valli, Gaudio, and Crewe sometimes rose to the occasion with performances that were both excellent and commercially successful.
The performance of “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine” which was imitated virtually note for note when recorded by the Walker Brothers, an American group based in England, was originally done by Valli, who was the initial artist to record the tune “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine” by Gaudio and Crewe. The Walker Brothers’ rendition was very well received by audiences. Valli proceeded to record solo performances and eventually achieved huge success with the release of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” The song peaked at number two on the charts and has been extensively reproduced by a broad variety of other musicians.
The first solo album released by Valli was a compilation of many previously released singles as well as a few new songs. In July 1967, before the release of Valli’s second solo album, a single was issued with “I Make a Fool of Myself” as the A-side. This song reached number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Timeless, Valli’s second release under his own name as a solo artist, was a more unified work overall, and the recording process for it required more time. “To Give” is the only song on Timeless that reached the Top 40.
Valli closed out the decade of the 1960s with a series of recordings that were either featured on the album Half & Half by Valli and the Four Seasons or released as separate singles. The rendition of “The Girl I’ll Never Know” became the lone success during this time period, and it peaked at position number 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
