Doechii is the stage name of American rapper and singer Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, who was born on August 14, 1998. Previously, she performed under the stage name I am Doechii. Oh the Places You’ll Go, her first extended play, was released in 2020, and in 2021, the song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” became an enormous hit on TikTok, propelling her to the forefront of the music scene. She subsequently joined Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records, the latter of which was responsible for the 2022 release of her sophomore extended play titled She/Her/Black Bitch.
Doechii was able to land a spot on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart because of the success of the single “Persuasive,” which also included a remix that featured SZA. She made her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 with the track “What It Is (Block Boy),” which she released in 2023 and which featured Kodak Black. The song peaked at number 60 and was her first single overall.
She has been put in the running for an MTV Video Music Award in addition to two Soul Train Music Award nominations. She was honored with the Rising Star Award presented by Billboard Women in Music in the year 2023. She graduated from Howard W. Blake High School in Tampa, Florida, where she had previously studied ballet, tap dance, and acting. In 2015, she made her first attempt at composing music, and the following year, under the alias Iamdoechii, she uploaded her debut single “Girls” on SoundCloud. The first volume of her project, titled Coven Music Session, was published in 2019.
Oh the Places You’ll Go, the debut extended play by Doechii, was independently produced and published in the year 2020.[2] Rolling Stone referred to it as a hybrid of pop, dance, and hip-hop in their review of the album. The song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” which was a single from an EP that was published in September 2020, was influenced by her study of The Artist’s Way. The song became popular on TikTok in 2021, which brought the attention of record labels to her.
She was also featured on Isaiah Rashad’s song “Wat U Sed” off his album The House Is Burning, which she performed with Rashad at the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards. In addition, she released her second extended play, titled Bra-Less, in 2021. She also served as an opening act for SZA on her tour in 2021. In March of 2022, she inked a contract with Capitol Records as well as Top Dawg Entertainment, so being the first female rapper to be signed to the latter label.
During the same month, she released “Persuasive,” which was her debut release with Top Dawg. She also made an appearance as a featured artist on the song “Trampoline” by David Guetta and Afrojack, along with Missy Elliott and Bia. The song “Crazy” was published by her in April of 2022. It features an intense rapping and ranting style from her. Doechii and the filmmaker C. Prinz came up with the concept for the music video to counteract the sexualized stereotyping of Black women as well as to present female nudity in a context other than that of the male gaze.
The music video features Doechii and other Black women engaging in battle with each other (catfighting), sometimes with firearms, in an empty parking lot. The record company had made prior attempts to negotiate with YouTube; nevertheless, in the end, the video-sharing platform imposed an age restriction upon its release, which significantly reduced the video’s exposure. She / Her / Black Bitch, her sophomore extended play and her debut release on a big label, was made available for purchase on August 5, 2022. The live rendition of her song “Persuasive” that she gave in July 2022 earned her a nomination for Push Performance of the Year at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards.
In April of 2023, Doechii was one of the performers at the 22nd annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Doechii’s rap delivery was called “animated” by Mankaprr Conteh of Rolling Stone, and her song narratives were called “quirky” by the same critic. Many artists, including the Notorious B.I.G., Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliott, and Azealia Banks, have been cited as influences on her work musically. She has defined her music as alternative hip hop, and she has identified Minaj and Lauryn Hill as her primary musical influences, referring to them as “powerful women” in both cases.
The recording artist specializes in hip-hop music and is best known for his tracks “Crazy” and “Persuasive.” The music video that goes along with the latter has received more than 900,000 views on YouTube. She has a following on TikTok of more than 340,000 people. It is known by the name Jaylah Hickmon. In addition to her musical output, she also maintains a YouTube channel on which she posts video blogs about many aspects of her life and experiences.
She uploaded a TikTok that she had taken at one of her live performances in Tulane in March of 2022. She gave a performance in 2015 of a cover of the song “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” which is featured in the movie Frozen. The United States of America is the place of her birth. There is a sister to her. She, along with SZA, is currently under contract with the record company TDE.
