Claire McCaskill Bio

Born on July 24, 1953, Claire Conner McCaskill is an American politician who has represented the state of Missouri in the United States Senate since 2007 and served as State Auditor of Missouri from 1999 to 2007. Prior to her election to the Senate, she was the State Auditor of Missouri. Rolla, Missouri, is where McCaskill was born and raised. Both the University of Missouri and the University of Missouri School of Law awarded her a degree upon completion of their programs.

McCaskill, who is affiliated with the Democratic Party, was a representative for the state of Missouri in the state legislature between the years 1983 and 1989, the prosecutor for Jackson County between 1993 and 1998, and the 34th State Auditor of Missouri from 1999 to 2007. She ran for governor of Missouri in the 2004 election, and she was successful in the Democratic primary, where she defeated the incumbent Democrat Bob Holden. However, she was unsuccessful in the general election, when she was defeated by the Republican Matt Blunt.

In 2006, McCaskill won a seat in the Senate of the United States of America. She is the second woman to have served as a senator from Missouri, but she is the first woman from Missouri to be elected as a candidate for a seat in the Senate. (After the passing of her husband, Jean Carnahan was selected for the position.) McCaskill was elected to a second term in 2012, but in 2018, she was defeated by the Republican rival Josh Hawley.

As of the month of February 2019, McCaskill is serving as a visiting fellow at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics in addition to her roles as a political analyst for MSNBC and NBC. Rolla, Missouri is where McCaskill began her life. Her father, William Young McCaskill, who passed away in 1993, was a state insurance commissioner during the time when Governor Warren E. Hearnes was in office.

He served from 1925 to 1993. Her mother, Betty Anne (born Ward; 1928–2012), made history in Columbia, Missouri, by being the first woman to be elected to the city council there. Leroy Blunt, the father of current U.S. Senator Roy Blunt and the grandfather of former Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, defeated Betty Anne McCaskill in a battle for a seat in the state House of Representatives. McCaskill came in second place.

McCaskill spent her early formative years in Houston, a small hamlet located in the state of Missouri. Later on, the family relocated to Lebanon, and then to Columbia. She went to David H. Hickman High School in Columbia, where she was a cheerleader, the president of the Pep Club, a member of the musical cast, and a member of the debate club. Additionally, she was crowned the homecoming queen.

McCaskill became a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority while she was a student at the University of Missouri, from where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1975. In 1978, she graduated with a Juris Doctor degree (often known as a J.D.) from the University of Missouri School of Law. McCaskill attended Georgetown University’s Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems during the summer of 1974, before to graduating from the University of Missouri. His studies there were focused on comparative political and economic systems.

McCaskill worked in the public sector for all but three years of her professional career, which spanned from the time she received her law degree in 1978 and graduated from law school to the time she left her seat in the United States Senate in January 2019. One notable exception to this rule is the period of time (1989–1991) that she worked as an attorney in a private practice in a law firm in Kansas City. After receiving her legal degree, she worked for the Missouri Court of Appeals for the Western District in Kansas City for a period of one year as a law clerk.

This court is located in the city. After that, McCaskill began her career as a prosecutor in the office of Jackson County, where she primarily worked on cases involving arson. McCaskill won the election to serve in the Missouri House of Representatives as the representative for the Brookside neighbourhood of Kansas City in the year 1982. She quit her post in the State House and considered a candidacy for Jackson County Prosecutor in 1988, but she ultimately opted against it because her mentor, fellow Democrat and incumbent Prosecutor Albert Riederer, chose to run for reelection.

McCaskill won election to the Jackson County Legislature in 1990, which is comparable to a county commission or county council. In February of 1991, she provided her testimony in support of a bill in the Missouri Senate that would have made it illegal for a man who was accused of raping his wife to cite their marriage as a defence. “This is just a matter pertaining to the most fundamental aspects of fairness. McCaskill has stated that it is shameful that we live in a state where it is OK to rape one’s wife.

In December of 1991, McCaskill made public her desire to compete for the position of county prosecutor. At the time that the statement was made, Riederer had not yet disclosed whether or not he planned to run for reelection. McCaskill stated that Riederer’s eleven years as county prosecutor allowed crime to “run amok” during that time. McCaskill was victorious in the Democratic primary, and  she went on to triumph in the general election of 1992, receiving 53 percent of the vote.

When she took her position as prosecutor for Jackson County, McCaskill was the first woman to hold that position. In 1996, she received 71 percent of the vote, ensuring her reelection. In the general election that took place in 1998, McCaskill received 50.3% of the vote, which enabled her to win the position of State Auditor. She was the second woman to ever hold the position; the first woman to ever hold the position was Margaret B. Kelly, who served as her direct predecessor.

In 2002, when Senator McCaskill was seeking reelection, the candidate with the most votes in the Republican primary was a man named Al Hanson. Hanson had been convicted of fraud in the past. Hanson said that he was capable of detecting fraud due to the fact that he had been a fraudster himself. Because of Hanson’s past, the chairman of the Republican Party in Missouri asked the state’s people not to give their support to Hanson in the general election. Senator McCaskill was successfully reelected with more than half of the vote.
