William Christopher “Dabo” Swinney, who is presently the head coach of Clemson University, is an American football coach. After Tommy Bowden’s retirement halfway through the 2008 campaign, Swinney assumed control. Swinney is second only to Frank Howard in terms of victories as a head coach at Clemson, having guided them to national titles in 2016 and 2018. On September 8, 2022, Swinney agreed to a new contract extension that will pay him $115 million over the course of the agreement and would retain him as the head coach of the Clemson Tigers until the 2031 football season. He now ranks second only to Nick Saban in terms of college football coaching compensation.
Swinney was born and reared in Pelham, Alabama, and later enrolled at the University of Alabama. In 1989, he became a walk-on wide receiver for the Crimson Tide football team. From 1990 through 1992, he played on three teams and received letters, including the Crimson Tide squad that won the national championship in 1992. Swinney was twice recognised as an Academic All-SEC and SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll member during a student at Alabama. He caught 7 receptions for 81 yards over the course of his three seasons at Alabama.
He graduated from Alabama in 1993 with a degree in business administration and a master’s in business administration in 1995. Swinney participated in Greek Life while in college and was inducted as a Pi Kappa Alpha brother. Swinney worked as a graduate assistant at Alabama under Gene Stallings while finishing his MBA. On October 13, 2008, Swinney was appointed the interim head football coach after Tommy Bowden announced his resignation six games into the season. The Tigers began the season as the ninth-ranked team in the preseason polls, but their first six games saw them go 3-3.
He was preparing the wide receivers for their next game when he learned about his promotion. When Swinney delivered five consecutive top-20 ESPN recruiting classes, including top 10 classes in 2011 and 2012, his reputation as a recruiter became clear. Along with LSU, Alabama, Texas, USC, Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Ohio State, and Oklahoma, Clemson was one of only 10 schools to be ranked in the top 20 of recruiting five years in a row as a result, and as of 2014, Swinney was one of only four active head coaches at the time to accomplish the feat. Swinney guided Clemson to a 6-6 regular season record in 2010.
Five of the season’s six defeats in 2010 were by less than ten points, and four of them were by six points or less. Close defeats were suffered against Cam Newton and the eventual national champion Auburn Tigers, as well as the eventual division winner Florida State Seminoles, throughout the course of the season. Many supporters demanded the dismissal of Swinney and Terry Don Phillips, the athletic director, when the regular season ended. After the regular season came to a close with a defeat to South Carolina, Swinney would claim he anticipated being dismissed. Instead, Phillips granted Swinney a second vote of confidence and let him stay for the 2011 campaign.
After a bowl defeat by South Florida left Clemson with a final record of 6-7—their first losing campaign since 1998—dissatisfaction with Swinney increased. Swinney, who had a record of 19–15, was largely seen as a coach in hot water going into the 2011 campaign. Despite having a poor 6-7 record, the 2010 squad had one of the finest defences in the country and Da’Quan Bowers, who won both the Bronko Nagurski and Ted Hendricks awards.
Swinney was a controversial appointment among some Clemson supporters despite his record for recruiting. According to several fans and analysts, he has never served as anything other than a position coach. Others questioned Clemson’s decision to keep one of Bowden’s aides on staff. Swinney, a well-known recruiter, was selected over associate head coach Brad Scott and Vic Koenning, the defensive coordinator at Clemson and the former head coach of Wyoming.
Swinney’s first moves as interim head coach included firing offensive coordinator Rob Spence and instituting a brand-new custom known as the “Tiger Walk,” in which all players and coaches stroll through Memorial Stadium’s parking lot two hours before a game as they make their final pregame adjustments.
On October 18, the squad defeated to Georgia Tech 21-17 in his debut game as temporary head coach. Swinney’s first triumph as the Tigers’ head coach came on November 1, 2008, when Clemson defeated Boston College to snap a six-game losing run versus the Eagles. In the yearly rivalry game on November 29, 2008, Swinney led Clemson to a 31-14 victory against South Carolina; as a result, Clemson qualified for a bowl. On December 1, 2008, Swinney was officially introduced as Clemson’s 27th head coach after Terry Don Phillips’ endorsement. He lost the 2009 Gator Bowl against the Nebraska Cornhuskers 26-21 in his debut game as the team’s full-time head coach.
After receiving his MBA from Alabama in December 1995, Swinney joined the Crimson Tide as a full-time assistant coach in charge of the wide receivers and tight ends. Under Mike DuBose, Stallings’ successor, he kept these positions. Early in 2001, he was let go along with the rest of DuBose’s crew.Swinney missed the 2001 campaign but Alabama continued to pay him according to his contract. Rich Wingo, a former strength coach at Alabama who is now the president of Birmingham-based AIG Baker Real Estate, sent an employment offer to him. He did not coach from April 2001 to February 2003; instead, he worked on Alabama development projects for AIG Baker Real Estate.
