Paul Stanley Bio

American musician Paul Stanley, co-founder, leader, rhythm guitarist, and co-lead singer of the hard rock band Kiss, was born Stanley Bert Eisen on January 20, 1952. Many of the band’s most well-known songs were written by him or with him. Stanley created The Starchild persona during his time with Kiss. As a member of Kiss, Stanley was into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The Inwood area in Inwood Hill Park in upper Manhattan, New York City, close to 211th St. and Broadway, is where Stanley Bert Eisen was born on January 20, 1952. His parents are both Jews.

He was the younger of his sister Julia and the second kid; she was born two years earlier. Their mother is descended from a family who escaped Nazi Germany by traveling first to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and subsequently to New York City. The parents of his father were Polish. Stanley was raised Jewish, although he didn’t think his family was very religious, and he didn’t have a bar mitzvah.  Beethoven’s compositions deeply affected Stanley, who grew up listening to classical music and light opera thanks to his parents.

Before undergoing reconstructive surgery at age 30 in 1982, Stanley’s right ear was deformed due to a congenital abnormality called microtia; he was unable to hear on that side, found it challenging to distinguish the direction of a sound, and could not comprehend speech in a loud setting. He attended PS 98, where other students made fun of his distorted ear. Before joining Kiss, Stanley played in the local band’s Uncle Joe, Post War Baby Boom, and Rainbow. In the early 1970s, Stanley joined Gene Simmons’ band Wicked Lester via a common acquaintance. In 1972, the band made an album, although it was never formally released. When Wicked Lester failed, Stanley and Simmons responded to Peter Criss’s Rolling Stone ad.

They conducted lead guitarist tryouts not long after hiring Criss, thanks to Stanley’s advertisement in the Village Voice. Ace Frehley’s playing won the group over, and he was almost an exact match for the band’s sound. In February 1974, Kiss released their self-titled first album. Gene Simmons claims in his book Sex Money Kiss that Stanley was the inspiration for KISS’s decision to perform sans makeup in the 1980s. Stanley remarked the period “for me was perfect. They gave me the opportunity to go out without makeup, something I had been craving at the time, so I found them to be quite gratifying. I believe I had it easier than Simmons since my cosmetics didn’t truly define my identity. The cosmetics just served to confirm what you already knew about me.”

Stanley was hospitalised in 2007 for tachycardia. For the first time in decades, Kiss played live as a trio without him. Stanley missed his first Kiss performance at the event. Stanley’s first album was released. Paul Stanley contributed to the four Kiss solo albums that were released at the same time, although he hasn’t done much solo work since leaving Kiss. In 1987–1988 he penned and recorded songs for another album, but Smashes, Thrashes & Hits, a Kiss collection, was given priority.

Songs like “Don’t Let Go” and “When Two Hearts Collide,” which were never officially published, have made their way around as bootleg recordings. “Time Traveler,” one of the songs on the album, was made available as a part of Kiss’ 2001 box set. On October 24, 2006, Stanley released his second solo album, Live to Win, 28 years after his first. The South Park episode “Make Love, Not Warcraft” features the album’s catchy title song, “Live to Win.” Stanley started a theatrical tour in promotion of Live to Win in October and November 2006.

His touring band was the Rock Star house band from the CBS television program, which included Sasha Krivtsov on drums, Paul Mirkovich on keyboards, Jim McGorman on guitar, Rafael Moreira on lead guitar, and Nate Morton on drums (bass). When Stanley expanded his tour to include Australia in April 2007, he performed there in cities such Coolangatta, Wollongong, Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide. A documentary named Paul Stanley: Live to Dream, produced by the Chicago-based Film Foetus, used footage from some of the tour. One Live Kiss, a DVD and digital audio download compilation of the band’s performance at the House of Blues in Chicago, was published in 2008 and included footage from the concert.

Sarah Brightman’s Symphony CD included a duet by Stanley and Brightman titled “I Will Be with You” in 2008. In 2016, he sang “Fire and Water” by Free as a guest on Ace Frehley’s covers album Origins, Vol. 1. Stanley started a short club tour in 1989. Guitarist Bob Kulick and future Kiss drummer Eric Singer were in his touring ensemble. Stanley sang the lead vocals on the album’s title song for the Wes Craven horror movie Shocker the same year. The notion of changing his name came to Stanley at this time, and it wasn’t only for commercial reasons—he had always detested his original name. He officially changed his name to Paul Stanley after being influenced by Paul McCartney and Paul Rodgers.

In Kiss, Stanley adopts the identity “the Starchild,” who wears one star above his right eye. For a short period of time, Stanley experimented with a new persona called “the Bandit,” complete with a “Lone Ranger”-inspired mask and makeup. This makeup style was used for a few gigs and photo sessions in 1973–1974; in some cases, he was captured in the same shot wearing both looks. He said, “I even attempted painting my face all crimson.” “I had hair the length of a tomato! I’d just draw a black circle around my eye before choosing the star. We all have clothing that expresses who we are. When it was time to apply something to my face, I knew it would be a star since I have always adored and related with stars.”

Despite having hearing issues, Stanley loved watching American Bandstand and listening to music. Eddie Cochran, Dion and the Belmonts, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard were some of his favourite musicians. Stanley’s family taught him how to sing in unison, and when he was seven, he received a toy guitar. In 1960, Stanley’s family moved to Queens’s Kew Gardens area. He listened to a lot of doo-wop music, but when the Beatles and the Rolling Stones performed on American television, he was motivated by the stage presence and felt that he could emulate it. At the age of 13, Stanley acquired his first real guitar—an acoustic one, though he would have preferred an electric one. He sang songs by the Lovin’ Spoonful, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, and other artists.

Stanley attended the High School of Music & Art in New York City, where he eventually graduated in 1970. Throughout his youth, Stanley had been recognised for his aptitude in graphic arts.He was voted number 18 on Hit Parader’s list of the Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time in 2006. He ranked 13th on a list of the Top 25 Frontmen published by Gibson.com in their reader vote from 2010.
