D. Todd Christofferson Bio

David Todd Christofferson, an American religious leader, and former attorney, was born on January 24, 1945. He now serves as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Christofferson was born in the state of Utah. Since 1993, he has served the church in the capacity of a general authority. At this time, he has the position of being the tenth most senior apostle in the church. His mission president was Richard G. Scott, who would already be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve when Christofferson was called to the same quorum as Scott. Christofferson would be called to serve in the same quorum. Following his service in the mission field, he attended BYU and received a bachelor’s degree in English and international relations in 1969. The following year, he attended Duke University School of Law and received a Juris Doctor degree.

Between the years 1972 and 1974, Christofferson started his career as a lawyer working as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Shortly after Christofferson started working as a clerk, Sirica was appointed to preside over the judicial procedures relating to the Watergate scandal. After working as a court clerk for some time, Christofferson enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and then continued his service in the reserves for another eight years.

Christofferson spent his childhood in Utah and New Jersey, and immediately upon graduation from high school, he went to Argentina to serve as an LDS missionary there. After that, he attended law school at Duke University after completing his undergraduate degree in English literature at Brigham Young University. Christofferson worked as a law clerk for Judge John Sirica on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia after he graduated from law school in 1972. During this time, Sirica presided over a significant portion of the legal processes that were the result of the Watergate crisis.

After that, Christofferson worked as a lawyer in private practice before moving on to become an in-house counsel for NationsBank, which is now a subsidiary of Bank of America. Christofferson practiced law in a number of cities, including Herndon, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, District of Columbia; and Nashville, Tennessee. Christofferson served as the assistant general counsel for NationsBank in Charlotte and as the volunteer chairman of Affordable Housing in Nashville, Tennessee. He was located in the state of Tennessee.

Before Christofferson was elevated to the position of general authority in the LDS Church, he served in the church in the capacities of bishop, stake president, and regional representative. At the general conference of the church that took place in April 1993, Christofferson was called to serve as a general authority and as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. In the month of August in 1998, Elder Christofferson was sustained to a position in the Presidency of the Seventy.

Christofferson served as the executive director of the Family and Church History Department of the church even though he was in his seventies at the time. During his time in this post, he participated in talks with Jewish officials over regulations on temple labor for Holocaust victims. The conversations resulted in the church announcing that its members should only conduct such temple work for family members. During this time, he was also participating in the negotiations. When the church finished the project of digitizing the Freedman’s Savings Bank Records, he was serving as the department head at the time.

Christofferson was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on April 5, 2008, during the solemn assembly session of the church’s general conference. This session took place at the same time as Thomas S. Monson was sustained as president of the church. Christofferson is revered by other members of the church for his roles as a prophet, seer, and revelator due to his membership in the Quorum of the Twelve.

In April of 2008, Elder D. Todd Christofferson was honored with a call to serve in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. At the moment that he received the call, he was assigned to a position of leadership within the Seventy. During the time that he served as President of the Seventy, he was given the job of supervising the Church’s operations in the North American West, Northwest, and Southeast areas. Additionally, he was the executive director of the Family and Church History Department for a period of time. Earlier in his career, he held the position of president of the Church’s Mexico South Area. His legal education was completed at Duke University, where he also served on the editorial board of the Duke Law Journal during his time there.

Elder Christofferson served as an assistant general counsel for NationsBank Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina until he was called to serve as a full-time General Authority. NationsBank Corporation is now known as Bank of America. In the past, he held the positions of senior vice president and general counsel at the Commerce Union Bank of Tennessee in Nashville. While there, he was actively involved in the local community and several religious groups.

During the Watergate trials, Christofferson worked as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica. They achieved the distinction of becoming the first people outside of the White House to listen to the Nixon White House recordings together. In a lecture he gave in June 2017 to professors and students at Christ Church College in Oxford, England, Christofferson stated, “Judge Sirica and I were shocked as we heard Nixon calmly ask” how much money it would take to keep the Watergate burglars silent about how much money it would take to keep them quiet. “Both the judge and I couldn’t believe what we were hearing, and we didn’t want to believe it,” she said. He handed me a letter that suggested we listen to the recording once again and then rewind it. We had both, up until this point, held out hope that the president was not really engaged, but it was now clear that this was not the case. On May 28, 1968, Christofferson wed Katherine Jacob at the Temple of the Salt Lake in Salt Lake City. Between the two of them, they have five little ones.
