Craig Morgan Bio

Craig Morgan Greer is a well-known country music performer who was born in the United States on July 17, 1964. Morgan is a veteran of the United States Army, having served in that capacity as a forward observer. He began his career as a musician in the year 2000 on Atlantic Records, releasing his debut album for that label under his own name prior to the closing of the business’s Nashville operation in the same year. Morgan acquired a recording contract with the indie label Broken Bow Records in 2002.

Since then, the label has issued all three of Morgan’s studio albums, including I Love It (2003), My Kind of Livin’ (2005), and Little Bit of Life (2006). These resulted in multiple chart hits, one of which was “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” which topped the country charts on Billboard for a total of four weeks and also topped the Billboard Year-End list for the country format for that particular year.

After releasing a greatest hits package in the middle of 2008, Morgan proceeded to sign with BNA Records and then release That’s Why later on in the same year. Following his departure from BNA, Morgan acquired a recording contract with Black River Entertainment and subsequently issued the albums This Ole Boy (2012) and A Whole Lot More to Me (2016).

Morgan has reached the top ten of the Billboard country charts a total of seventeen times. In addition to “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” six other singles of his have made it into the top ten of that chart: “Almost Home,” “Redneck Yacht Club,” “Little Bit of Life,” “International Harvester,” and “Love Remembers.” “Bonfire” was the most recent of these tracks to achieve the top spot. The 17th of July, 1964 finds Craig Morgan Greer being brought into the world at Kingston Springs, Tennessee.

At the age of 18, he started working as an emergency medical technician. He was a member of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions of the United States Army throughout his active duty service of nine and a half years, and he continued to serve in the reserves for an additional six and a half years after that. When he got back to Tennessee, he started doing a variety of jobs to provide for his family. Some of these jobs included being a construction worker, a security guard, and an employee at Wal-Mart. In later years, he was able to secure a position in Nashville singing demos for various songwriters and publishing agencies.

As a result of the demos, in the year 2000, Atlantic Records released his debut studio album, which was titled simply Craig Morgan. It resulted in the release of three singles, the most successful of which was “Something to Write Home About,” which peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts (now known as Hot Country Songs). Buddy Cannon and Norro Wilson are credited with producing the album, and a number of people, including Cannon, Bill Anderson, and Harley Allen, contributed to the album’s writing.

The closing track of the CD was titled “I Wish I Could See Bakersfield,” and it featured a recitation delivered by Merle Haggard. The writer Jon Weisberger of Country Standard Time gave the album a mixed review, saying that Morgan had a powerful singing voice but that the majority of the tracks were “by-the-numbers.” Jim Patterson of The Ledger noted that the lead-off single “Something to Write Home About” was “pedestrian,” but that the rest of the album was “an uncommonly assured hard-country effort.” Patterson said this despite the fact that the remainder of the album was “an uncommonly assured hard-country effort.”

Towards the end of the year, Morgan released a Christmas single titled “The Kid in Me” and it charted. Morgan parted ways with Atlantic Records in early 2001 after the label announced it would be closing its Nashville branch. However, he stated that he did not feel anxious about his future in the music industry because he was still under contract with a publishing company at the time. Morgan became a member of the Broken Bow Records roster in the year 2002. I Love It was his second studio album, and it was published by the label in March of 2003.

This album started off with the song “God, Family and Country,” which was a dedication to the late Randy Hardison, who was a session drummer in Nashville in the past. Backing vocals were provided by the group 4 Runner. It reached its highest position on the country charts at number 49. The song “Almost Home” was Morgan’s second top 40 smash, and it came after this song. After reaching a high of number 33 on the Hot Country Songs charts, the song was eventually removed from those rankings. However, it saw a surprising boost in airplay after falling off the charts, and as a result, it was re-entered into the chart three weeks later at the number 25 position.

After re-entering the charts, the song proceeded to hit a new high position on Hot Country Songs by climbing to number six, and it also made it to number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition, Broadcast Music Incorporated presented Morgan and co-writer Kerry Kurt Phillips with the Song of the Year award for their work on the song. The following two songs from the album, “Every Friday Afternoon” and “Look at Us,” both made it into the top 30 of the country music charts.

By the year 2004, more than 300,000 copies of the album had been sold, and Billboard recognized its success as the beginning of a new wave of commercial success among independently signed country music performers. Rick Cohoon of Allmusic scored I Love It four out of a possible five stars, saying that Morgan’s songwriting was “well-crafted” and that his time in the Army justified the patriotic themes of “God, Family and Country.” Cohoon said that Morgan’s songwriting was “well-crafted” and that his service in the Army justified the patriotic themes of “God, Family and Country.” Jeffrey B. Remz, a contributor to Country Standard Time, praised the album for keeping a neotraditionalist country style, although he stated that the ballads were “generic.”
