Craig David Bio

Craig Ashley David MBE is a British singer and songwriter who came to prominence in 1999 when he appeared on the track “Re-Rewind” by Artful Dodger. David was born on May 5, 1981, in the United Kingdom. Born to Do It, David’s first studio album was published in the year 2000. Since then, he has gone on to release a total of five more studio albums and collaborated with a wide range of musicians, including Sting, Tinchy Stryder, Big Narstie, Kano, and Jay Sean. As a solo artist, David has over 15 million records sold globally, including 20 singles that peaked in the top 40 in the UK and seven albums that peaked in the top 40 in the UK.

David has had a total of fourteen nominations for awards, including two Grammy Award nominations for the category of Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and five nominations for the Brit Award for Best British Male. David was born in Southampton, Hampshire, and raised on the Holyrood estate. His mother, Tina (née Loftus), worked as a store assistant at Superdrug, while his father, George David, was a carpenter.

David’s maternal grandpa was an Orthodox Jew, and his maternal grandmother was a convert to Judaism. David’s father is Afro-Greek, and his mother is Anglo-Jewish. They are linked to the founders of the Accurist watch-making company. When David was eight years old, his parents divorced, and from that point on, his mother was responsible for raising him.

Both Bellemoor School and Southampton City College were on his educational path. At school, David was the target of bullying from other classmates. In 2005, he penned and published the song “Johnny,” which was about his recollections of being bullied throughout his childhood. George David, David’s father, was a member of a reggae band called the Ebony Rockers and played the bass. David started going out with his father to the local dance clubs when he was a teenager.

There, the DJs would let him take the microphone. The first time people heard David’s work was on the single “I’m Ready,” which was the B-side of a cover that the British band Damage did of the song “Wonderful Tonight.” After that, he began providing vocals for the UK garage combo Artful Dodger, contributing to songs like “Something” and “What Ya Gonna Do.” David was not previously known to Wildstar Records until the artist’s former manager, Paul Widger, introduced himself to the label’s co-owner, Colin Lester, and played some of David’s work for him.

After more reflection, Lester said to HitQuarters that the first song he heard, “Walking Away,” left an especially strong impression on him, describing it as “an absolute stand-out.” It dawned on me that any individual who, at the age of seventeen, could write a song as good as this one had enormous potential. When the boss of Wildstar later visited the artist at his home in Southampton, he found David’s tiny bedroom filled from floor to ceiling with 12″ vinyl albums. This further convinced the boss that David was the real thing and not just some kid acting out the role. “That convinced me he was the real deal and not just some kid acting out the part,” he said.

At that point, Lester extended an offer for a development deal with the label he worked for. After hearing the song “7 Days” at a later time, Lester claimed that he instantly heard a number-one record and promptly upgraded the contract to an album agreement on the same day. In 1999, the track “Re-Rewind (The Crowd Say Bo Selecta)” from the album It’s All About the Stragglers by Artful Dodger reached number two on the charts in the United Kingdom. This success paved the path for the artist to launch a successful solo career.

It was the first of a string of four top 10 singles from David’s debut album Born to Do It, which eventually sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and earned multi-platinum status in more than 20 countries. David’s first single, “Fill Me In,” was released on Colin Lester’s and Ian McAndrew’s Wildstar Records, and it topped the UK chart. “Fill Me In” was also the first single from his debut album to top the chart in the UK. The song “Key to My Heart,” which was included on the US version of the album, was also used in the animated film Osmosis Jones, which won multiple awards and was produced by Warner Bros.

The popularity of David’s debut album, which was almost entirely composed by David and Mark Hill of Artful Dodger, led to the release of “Fill Me In” in the United States in May of 2001. It was able to climb all the way up to position number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 list. On July 17, 2001, Born to Do It was released in the United States. It reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 list at number 11 and has sold more than one million copies. Although “Walking Away” had reached number 3 in the UK and number 5 in Australia, it did not make the top 40 in the United States and was the last of his singles to chart there. The single “7 Days” was successful in the United States, reaching the top 10 in that country..

Born to Do It finished in second place on MTV’s poll of the “Greatest Album of All Time” in April 2009, behind only Thriller by Michael Jackson. In 2002, the follow-up CD, titled Slicker Than Your Average, was made available for purchase. The first four singles from the album continued David’s run of top 10 hits in the UK, increasing the total number of top 10 songs to a total of nine consecutive hits until “World Filled with Love” reached its highest position at number 15 in 2003.

There were six singles taken from the album, although none of them charted in the United States. Although the songs “What’s Your Flava?” and “Rise & Fall” (a duet with Sting) were played on the urban contemporary and soft adult contemporary formats, respectively, neither one of them made it onto the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs nor the Adult Contemporary charts. Despite this, “What’s Your Flava?” was able to crack the top 40 in three different categories, peaking at number 32 on the Rhythmic Top 40 list, number 24 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart, and number 37 on the Top 40 Tracks chart. Slicker Than Your Average was awarded the gold certification by the RIAA for sales in the United States
