Claude Joséphine Rose “Claudia” Cardinale is an Italian actress. Her full name in French is Claude Joséphine Rose “Claudia” Cardinale. Cardinale was born and raised in the neighborhood of La Goulette, which is located in Tunis. In 1957, she won the competition for the “Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia.” The prize for her victory was a trip to Italy, which quickly led to film contract offers. This was primarily due to the involvement of Franco Cristaldi, who served as her mentor for a number of years and later married her. After making her acting debut in the film Goha with the Egyptian superstar Omar Sharif in a supporting part, Claudia Cardinale went on to become one of the most well-known actresses in Italy via her work in films such as Rocco and His Brothers, Girl with a Suitcase, Cartouche, The Leopard, and Fellini’s 812.
Cardinale returned to Italian and French cinema after becoming disillusioned with the Hollywood film industry. She received the David di Donatello Award for Best Actress for her performances in the films Il giorno della Civetta and as a prostitute alongside Alberto Sordi in A Girl in Australia. Cardinale first met director Pasquale Squitieri in 1974; he would go on to become her partner. She appeared in several of Squitieri’s films, such as I Guappi, Corleone, and Claretta, the latter of which earned her the Nastro d’Argento Award for Best Actress. Cardinale received the award for her performance in Claretta.
She played the love interest of Klaus Kinski in the 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, which was directed by Werner Herzog. Kinski’s character is trying to acquire the finances necessary to purchase a steamer in Peru. Cardinale’s portrayal as an elderly Italian grandmother who takes in a young Turkish exchange student earned her the title of Best Actress at the 47th Antalya “Golden Orange” International Film Festival in 2010. The award was presented to her in recognition of her work in the film Signora Enrica.
Cardinale has been a UNESCO goodwill ambassador for the Defence of Women’s Rights since March of the year 2000. Throughout the years, she has been outspoken on issues pertaining to women’s rights. Cardinale was voted one of the 50 most beautiful women in the history of cinema by the readers of the Los Angeles Times Magazine in February of 2011. On April 15, 1938, Claudia Cardinale was given the name Claude Joséphine Rose Cardinale when she was born in the neighborhood of La Goulette in Tunis, Tunisia.
Her mother, Yolande Greco, and she were both born in Tunisia to Sicilian immigrants from the city of Trapani. Yolande Greco was named after her. Her maternal ancestors had a modest shipbuilding business in Trapani, but they eventually moved to La Goulette, where there was a significant Italian population at the time. Francesco Cardinale, her father, was born and raised in Gela, Sicily, and worked as a railway worker. Her first languages were French, an Arabic dialect spoken in Tunisia, and the Sicilian dialect spoken by her parents. She did not start studying the Italian language until after she was already being considered for roles in Italian films.
Cardinale and her younger sister Blanche both received their education in Carthage at the Saint-Joseph-de-l’Apparition school. Cardinale received her education there with Blanche. She went on to complete her education at the Paul Cambon School with the goal of working in education when she had her diploma. When she was a teenager, she was said to be “silent, weird, and wild,” and she, like many other girls of her day, was enamored with Brigitte Bardot. Brigitte Bardot rose to fame after starring in Roger Vadim’s 1956 film And God Created Woman, which became a critical and commercial success. Cardinale’s first job in cinema was an appearance in a short film titled “Anneaux d’Or” by French filmmaker René Vautier.
The film was shown to great acclaim at the Berlin Cinema Festival. Cardinale’s classmates also appeared in the film. She became something of a local celebrity as a result of the movie, which led to Jacques Baratier stumbling upon her and giving her a small part in the movie Goha. After hearing that Baratier preferred a Tunisian actress rather than an Italian one to play the lead role alongside the Egyptian actor Omar Sharif, she grudgingly agreed to take the part. Baratier had revealed his reasoning for his casting choice. However, the cameo served as her first appearance in a feature picture. The turning point occurred in 1957 at the Italian Cinema Week in Tunis, when she won a competition for the “Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia”.
The first prize was a trip to the Venice Film Festival. She was given the opportunity to train under Tina Lattanzi at the Experimental Cinematography Centre in Rome after being discovered by a number of film producers who were in attendance at the event. She only spent a short amount of time there because, despite the fact that she had incredibly beautiful features, she struggled with her acting tasks. She departed at the conclusion of her first term and made the choice to return home, which resulted in a cover story being written about her in the well-known weekly publication Epoca. The narrative was prompted by her sudden decision to abandon a career as a film star.
Cardinale was just 17 years old when she started a relationship with a Frenchman who was around 10 years her senior. This connection began while Cardinale was still a teenager and continued for approximately one year. When Cardinale returned to Tunis, she was shocked to learn that she was pregnant as a consequence of this “terrible” relationship. As soon as he found out, he pressured her to have an abortion, but she made the decision to retain the baby instead. She overcame her challenges by entering into an exclusive deal with Franco Cristaldi’s production firm, Vides, for a period of seven years. She was married to Cristaldi from 1966 to 1975, during which time he was mostly responsible for managing her early career.
Cardinale was offered a small part in the 1958 film Big Deal on Madonna Street starring alongside Italian stars Vittorio Gassman, Tot, Marcello Mastroianni, and Renato Salvatori as part of the new contract. The film was directed by Mario Monicelli and was a huge commercial success throughout the world. She played the role of Carmelita, a Sicilian girl whose domineering brother kept her almost confined to their house her whole life. Cardinale became immediately recognizable as a result of the enormous popularity of the comedy. It wasn’t long before certain publications began referring to her as “la fidanzata d’Italia. In the latter part of that year, she starred in the romantic comedy Three Strangers in Rome, which was directed by Claudio Gora and co-starring Yvonne Monlaur.
