Chetan Prakash Bhagat was born On April 22, 1974, in New Delhi, India. In the Naraina Vihar neighborhood of West Delhi, he grew up. Both of his parents held government jobs or served in the Indian military. He attended public schools in Delhi. Afterward, Chetan Bhagat enrolled at Delhi’s ‘Army Public School’ in the city’s Dhaula Kuan neighborhood. As a young boy, he enjoyed mathematics and was a natural comedian. He continuously has excellent academic performance. He also began writing while still in high school, and he was a serious student of English literature.
The fifth grade was when he first realized how much he enjoyed writing. Chetan was encouraged to contribute to the school’s literary magazine, which he had helped start. The journal published a joke that Chetan penned. When the joke was finally printed, he was overjoyed to see his name in print. As a result, he produced other works in the years that followed.
After finishing at Army Public School, he enrolled at Delhi’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), widely considered to be India’s most prestigious university. In 1995, he earned a Bachelor of Technology in mechanical engineering. After completing his undergraduate studies, he enrolled at the “Indian Institute of Management” (IIM) in Ahmedabad to pursue an MBA. Then, he started putting more words on paper. Even though he came from a middle-class background, he had always dreamed of making a living as a writer.
Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author, motivational speaker, TV personality, and former banker who quickly found a job after graduating from “IIM-A” and relocating to Hong Kong. He has become India’s most beloved writer in the English language. He is a native New Delhiite who attended the Indian Institute of Technology and later the Indian Institute of Management. After earning his MBA from “IIM,” he relocated to Hong Kong and worked as an investment banker for companies like “Goldman Sachs” and “Deutsche Bank.”
Five Point Someone was an enormous financial and critical success as a novel. After that, he went on to pen novels like “One Night at the Call Center” and “The 3 Mistakes of My Life,” from which numerous hits like “2 States,” “Half Girlfriend,” and “Five Point Someone” were adapted. He has also penned a few screenplays and served as a judge on a celebrity dance competition show. He is one of the few authors from India to become a household name.
After finishing college in 1997, he was hired by “Peregrine Investments Holdings,” then one of Asia’s leading investment firms. His family and he uprooted to Hong Kong. He was employed by “Peregrine” for a total of six months before the bank’s closure. He remained in Hong Kong, where he was hired by “Goldman Sachs,” a major international financial firm, in 1998. He disliked his employment there from the start. His dislike for his employment stemmed largely from his dislike for his supervisor and his burgeoning interest in writing. But he stayed at the bank and made ends meet since he saw no other way to make money.
He worked, but he also kept at what would become his first novel. It took him a long time to complete a draft of “Five Point Someone,” and even longer to leave his job at “Goldman Sachs” in order to pursue other opportunities. After beginning his career with “Deutsche Bank” in the mid-2000s, Chetan Bhagat rose through the ranks to become a vice president by 2006. By that time, he was already one of India’s most popular authors. Nonetheless, he was not earning enough from his work to support himself. After ten years of living and working in Hong Kong, he returned to India in March 2008. After a short period of time, his works were turning a tidy profit. As a result, he left his position as an investment banker.
In the early 2000s, while Chetan Bhagat was working at ‘Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong, he began working on his debut novel, ‘Five Point Someone.’ He worked during office hours and kept editing and polishing the draft for years, but he kept this secret from his coworkers. He revised the novel perhaps fifteen times before sending the final text off to several publishing houses. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them turned him down. In the end, the Old Delhi publishing business ‘Rupa & Co.’ accepted his book with some minor revision requests.
In 2004, when it was finally released, the novel was an instant hit. Three engineering students’ plights in their personal and professional life were chronicled. Around a million copies of the book were sold around the world. One of the most successful Hindi films of all time, ‘3 Idiots,’ was released in 2009 and was partially based on the novel. Bhagat’s second novel, “One Night @ the Call Center,” is set in the world of Indian call centers and was inspired by the success of his first. Published in 2005, the novel became another commercial hit by moving 50,000 copies in its first three days of sale. It was the best-selling book in India at the time.
