Bio

June gave was born on June 23, 1977, and they raised him in Virginia. The Czech word for “frost” is whence he gets his last name, so he is of Czech heritage. Although though he grew up in a broken household due to his parent’s divorce, he enjoyed a pleasant upbringing in a kind and welcoming community. Cheerleading was a big part of his high school experience at Lee Davis. He spent a few months after graduation studying at New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

After enrolling at Longwood University in Virginia, he decided to abandon his studies and focus on his music instead. Jason Mraz, the singer, and songwriter whose album Mr. A-Z sold over a hundred thousand copies is a genuine music fan who isn’t motivated by fame or money. The album’s success had him feeling so overwhelmed that he just wanted to get away for a while and raise cats in silence. After some time away, he came back to the music scene with renewed energy and talent.

His music has been described as “moving and soulful,” and he has made a number of albums that have gone platinum or gold in the United States and elsewhere. He has won not one, but two Grammys, as well as several other major honors. Jason’s always had a passion for the performing arts, so he decided to pursue his education at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Then he left school and relocated to San Diego to focus on his music. He started off playing at coffeehouses for a while before his CD was even released.

In 2002, he debuted with the album “Waiting for My Rocket to Arrive” after signing with Elektra Records. On the Billboard 200, the album peaked at position 55. When one million copies of the album were sold, it was certified Platinum. He performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall as an opening act for Tracy Chapman in 2003. While on tour in 2004, he recorded a live album titled “Tonight, Not Again: Jason Mraz Live at the Eagles Ballroom,” which was published in 2004.

In 2005, he released his second studio album, titled Mr. A-Z. It was successful enough to reach the top five on Billboard’s chart.  In 2006, he performed at Singapore’s annual Mosaic Music Festival. He performed at numerous music festivals in the United States and abroad in the United Kingdom and Ireland that year.

His 2008 CD, “We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Stuff,” was an international smash upon its initial release in the United States. Mraz had previously released acoustic versions of the songs on the album across three EPs. His album’s success prompted him to embark on a globe tour, during which he played shows at venues across Europe, Asia, and Australia. In 2008, he launched a book titled “A Thousand Things” that collected his travel photography.

In 2012, he released another album called “Love is a Four-Letter Word,” which also did well critically. The song “I Won’t Give Up” was the album’s lead-off single. The album entered the charts at position two in the UK and first in Canada. After releasing an album, he usually goes on tour, and his recent stops included the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Madison Square Garden in New York City, and the O2 Arena in London. In 2010, he took home two Grammys for his efforts. Two actually, one for “Lucky” as Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and another for “Make it Mine” as Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The 2013 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Pop Male Artist went to him. At one point he was set to marry singer/songwriter Tristan Prettyman, but he ended things. He’s vegan and thinks his diet has anything to do with how his songs sound. He has a strong stance on many social issues, including the environment, human rights, LGBT equality, etc. In 2011, he set up the Jason Mraz Foundation to aid organizations that promote social justice, environmental protection, and educational opportunities for all.

Mraz participated heavily in school productions of musicals while growing up in Mechanicsville, Virginia. He dropped out of New York’s American Musical and Dramatic Academy after learning guitar there and deciding to pursue music full-time instead. After spending some time back in his home state of Virginia, he headed west to San Diego, where he immersed himself in the city’s developing coffeehouse culture.

Mraz started performing live and was quickly offered a weekly engagement at the popular neighborhood hangout Java Joe’s, which had previously launched the careers of other singer/songwriters such as Jewel and Steve Poltz. Releases like 1999’s A Jason Mraz Demonstration and 2001’s Live at Java Joe’s, on which he was supported by percussionist Noel “Toca” Rivera, helped him improve his live performance. After attracting the attention of multiple record labels, he finally signed with Elektra in late 2001 and began touring with Jewel early the following year.

In 2011, he used his fame to create the Jason Mraz Foundation, which has donated to several international relief organizations. He then became a vocal supporter of human and LGBT rights, as well as environmental protection. Until the release of his fourth studio album, Love Is a Four Letter Word, he continued to put out music at a steady clip, with releases including a live album and two extended plays. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 upon its April 2012 release, and it spawned another massive hit with “I Won’t Give Up.” After that, he performed to sold-out crowds at places like Madison Square Garden and London’s O2 Arena and even visited the White House. Yeah!, released in 2014, was an acoustic album featuring Mraz and the all-female folk-rock band Raining Jane.

He sang both “Bad Idea” and “You Matter to Me” from Sara Bareilles’ musical Waitress on her album What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress the following year. The next year, 2017, he made his Broadway debut when he replaced the original Dr. Pomatter in Waitress for a ten-week run. After that, in 2018, he released Know, his first album since 2015. It landed at number nine on the Billboard 200 and continued its successful folk-pop style, with additional contributions from Raining Jane.
