Charles Bird is an Irish journalist and broadcaster who was born on September 9th, 1949. Up until January 2009, he served as RTÉ News and Current Affairs’ Chief News Correspondent. He accepted the position of Washington Correspondent, however, in June 2010 he abruptly left and resumed his previous position in Ireland. He left RTÉ in August of that year. In 1949, Bird was born in Sandymount, Dublin. His high school of education was Sandymount. When Charlie made the iconic announcement that he would climb Croagh Patrick despite his illness on The Late Late Show last year, fellow guest artist Daniel O’Donnell was so affected that he handed Charlie his own pair of rosary beads. Charlie said that he was very moved by this.
On the global stage, Bird covered both Gulf Wars and was present in Syria for Brian Keenan’s release. An honorary doctorate was given to him by University College Dublin in 2002. Mr. Bird claimed that he has already made arrangements for his burial and has decided to inter his ashes with his best friend Peadar in a special location on the Aran Islands. In a one-time interview with Ryan Tubridy from his home in Co. Wicklow for The Late Late Show, he said that despite losing all of his voice at this point, he has finally come to terms with his dismal diagnosis.
“The fact is, I’ve finally accepted my disease, to be honest. I’ve accepted my condition completely in my brain. I am aware that there is no magic cure and that I must move on with my life. Or, to put it another way, I know exactly what is ahead of me,” he remarked, using a unique speech simulation tool.”I can still walk, and when people see me out walking, they say I look great, but the horrible truth of my MND is that my voice has now completely disappeared, my swallow has deteriorated, and it is now a challenge to get through the meal without a coughing fit. If I’m really lucky, I may survive another year.”
On RTÉ News broadcasts later that evening, Bird spoke of his personal experience—and of how his assailants had recognized him and called him an “Orange Bastard.” Witnesses included Sunday Independent journalist Daniel McConnell, who reported on the event the following day. Bird’s appearance on the Six O’Clock News was criticized by The Sunday Independent . In this collection of documentary programs, which he hosted in 2006, 2007, and 2008, he traveled to the Amazon, the Ganges, and the Arctic.
His first report as the Washington reporter for RTÉ News and Current Affairs was on the Nine O’Clock bulletin about US Airways Flight 1549. RTÉ got 30 complaints after Bird “failed to wear a coat and tie” on Six One during coverage of Ted Kennedy’s passing.
In January 2010, Bird provided coverage of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Later that month, a two-part documentary about his first year in the United States was broadcast on RTÉ One. In it, he discussed his “madness” in moving to the country and his lack of contacts and recognition in Washington DC. At the end of the second program, he announced he would leave his Washington post.
In June 2010, Bird returned to Ireland to resume his previous position as Chief News Correspondent with RTÉ. He covered Enda Kenny’s high-profile leadership challenge after his return. In August 2010, Bird started presenting The Marian Finucane Show. On August 26, 2012, Bird retired from RTÉ. His final broadcast was presenting The Marian Finucane Show on RTÉ Radio 1.
On TV3, he hosted Tonight with Vincent Browne from August 29 to September 1, 2016. Tariq Ali of the International Marxist Group and Charlie Bird attended Peter Graham of Saor Éire’s funeral in this capacity, and a photo from the funeral shows them giving a clenched fist salute at the grave. In the mid-1970s, Eoghan Harris recruited Bird into RTÉ. In the late 1960s, Bird took an active interest in far-left politics as a member of Young Socialists.He joined Official Sinn Féin in the early 1970s, and in 1973 served as its director of elections in Dublin South-Central.
