Martha Catherine Kearney, BA, is a prize-winning and nationally renowned broadcast journalist. She works in television and radio for the BBC and is an exceptionally dynamic Patron of the Bury St. Edmunds-based charity Learning through Leisure with Holiday Explorers. The Senate of Anglia Polytechnic University has great pleasure in recommending that she be awarded an Honorary Master of Arts degree.

We are paying Martha today’s tribute because of her energy and dedication. She has developed a reputation as one of the BBC’s most high-flying political journalists while simultaneously making a significant contribution to the local community through her work.

Patron of this most commendable charity dedicated to improving the quality of life of people who struggle with learning. This charity is dedicated to improving the quality of life of people who work with knowledge. She exemplifies what it means to be an admirable role model for today’s young ladies.

The city of Dublin is where Martha was born. Martha attended George Watson’s Ladies College in Edinburgh before continuing her education at St. Anne’s College in Oxford, where she majored in classics. Subsequently, the family relocated from Sussex to Scotland and then to Scotland again.

She started her career by working as a trainee for the London Broadcasting Corporation, where she remained for seven years and had several positions, including phone-in presenter and political reporter. In 1988, she began her career in television by working as a reporter for Channel Four’s Week in Politics. After that, she worked as a reporter for BBC Radio 4’s On the Record before taking a gap year to explore the globe.

After returning home in 1991, Martha immediately returned to work in the broadcasting industry, beginning with On the Record and continuing there until 1994, when she transitioned to Newsnight on BBC2 TV. There, she has taken on the role of Political Editor, and she will host the show less regularly. She has also hosted BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour since 1998 and is a frequent host on Radio 4’s Today program. Additionally, she has hosted BBC Radio 4’s Today program.

The world of the media and the world at large have both taken note of Martha’s broadcasting efforts. Her work has not gone unnoticed. Her coverage of the Northern Ireland peace process earned her a nomination for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in 1998. In 2000, she was nominated (along with her colleague Jenni Murray) for a Sony Radio Award for news and talk broadcasting, and Martha won the Sony Radio Bronze Award in 2001.

Because Martha spent many years reporting on the conflict in Northern Ireland, she was eventually considered for a BAFTA award. She was the one who leaked the fact that Martin McGuinness had been having covert conversations with the British administration. She then produced a documentary on the history of the Maze prison, for which she interviewed former paramilitary detainees in the facility off camera.

Additionally, she made a documentary on the Good Friday Agreement, which included interviews with the principal participants in the conflict. Martha and her family spent a good portion of their lives in Pennsylvania, and she has covered every election in the United States since 1988.

That included interviews with many American officials, such as Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, John McCain, Nancy Pelosi, and Bob Dole. In 2007, she was promoted to the role of main presenter .

“The World at One,” during which time she conducted several interviews that made headlines and saw a rise in audience size. Since 2002, Martha has made three trips to Afghanistan, the most recent one during which she accompanied the commander-in-chief of the British Army.

Martha’s interviews covered various topics throughout her almost ten years as the host of Woman’s Hour. Some of the guests she spoke with were Amy Winehouse, Hilary Mantel, Courtney Love, Arundhati Roy, and Jane Fonda. Martha conducted interviews with the artists Peter Doig, Anthony Gormley, Tracey Emin, and Cornelia Parker when she was hosting the arts show Newsnight Review for several years. Ed Ruscha was also one of the interviewees.

Learning through Leisure with Holiday Explorers (initially known simply as Holiday Explorers) is the name of the charitable organization that Martha is a highly active Patron. Its purpose is to provide individuals with learning disabilities (referred to as the Explorers) the chance to improve their learning and social skills via participation in recreational and vacation activities. To achieve success, it is necessary to have volunteer companions who are people who do not have learning difficulties.

These volunteers provide personalized assistance to the explorers, which enables the explorers to acquire confidence via the shared focus of the vacation. Martha’s involvement in various fund-raising activities makes her an asset to the charity she serves as a Patron.

Still, she also acts as a terrific morale-booster to the local team, which is a tremendous benefit. Because of all of these things, I would like to extend to Martha Catherine Kearney, BA, an invitation to get an honorary master’s degree in arts from this university. I welcome you, Vice-Chancellor.
