Bio

American professional basketball player Sue Bird is now a member of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Seattle Storm. She has played on three separate Seattle Storm teams that have won WNBA championships. Sue Bird, a New York native, gained Israeli citizenship through her father. She competes internationally for her own nation, the United States, and has competed for them in four FIBA World Cups and four Olympic Games. Her enthusiasm for sports began at a young age. She participated in track and field, tennis, and soccer in addition to hoops. In order to have better competition, she transferred to Christ the King Regional High School after representing Syosset High School during her freshman and sophomore years. Sue Bird later enrolled at the University of Connecticut, where she played basketball for the UConn Huskies and helped them win two NCAA Championships.

She was selected by the Storm as their first overall pick in the WNBA draught in 2002, and she has remained with them ever since. She works as the operations associate for the Denver Nuggets and was previously connected to three Russian teams. Sue Bird, the younger of Herschel and Nancy Bird’s two daughters, was born on October 16, 1980, in Syosset, Nassau County, New York on Long Island. Jen is the name of her older sister. The father of Sue Bird is a Jew from Ukraine. The Seattle Storm selected Sue Bird with the first overall pick in the 2002 WNBA draught. She played in 32 games as a rookie, starting every one of them, and averaged 14.4 points per contest.

That year, the Seattle Storm advanced to the playoffs but lost to the Los Angeles Sparks in the Conference Semi-Finals. Bird scored 14 points each game while participating in both of the Storm’s games versus the Sparks. Since the year 2000, Sue Bird has competed for the US national team. She contributed greatly to her team’s gold-medal winning effort even in her maiden competition, the 2000 Jones Cup in Taipei. She captured the gold medal at the FIBA World Cup in China in 2002. In 2004, she competed in her first Olympics in Athens. That year, the United States went on to win the gold medal, and they have since repeated the feat at the Olympic Games in 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, and 2016 Rio de Janeiro.

With the Storm, she captured her first WNBA title in 2004. She participated in 34 games during the regular seasons, starting every one of them, and averaged 12.9 points per contest. She started each of the Storm’s eight playoff games, averaging 8.5 points per game.

Sue Bird has always had a passion for athletics, especially basketball, soccer, tennis, and track & field. She didn’t take long to start showcasing her extraordinary basketball abilities. She started playing in AAU basketball contests when she was in sixth grade.

Sue Bird attended Syosset High School during her first and second years of high school and participated in sports there. She enrolled in Christ the King Regional High School because she wanted more rivalry and flourished there for three years, winning the New York State Player of the Year and the New York Daily News Player of the Year awards. She received praise for being a WBCA All-American.

She joined the University of Connecticut in 1998 after graduating from high school and joined their squad, the UConn Huskies. She won multiple honors during her four years there, including three Nancy Lieberman Awards, Naismith College Player of the Year (2002), and USBWA Women’s National Player of the Year. She also guided the Huskies to two NCAA title wins.
