Bill Greason Bio

William Henry Greason is a former professional baseball player from the United States who subsequently became a Baptist pastor in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born on September 3, 1924. He was born in Atlanta, and he said to an interviewer for the year 2020, “I grew up across the street from Martin Luther King Jr.” as he was growing up. During World War II, Greason became one of the first black Marines to join in the United States Marine Corps. He had his first training at Montford Point, then went on to serve in the Marine Corps.

He participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima while serving with the 66th Supply Platoon, which was an all-black force operating in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Greason was a right-handed pitcher who stood 5 feet 10 inches (1.78 meters) tall and weighed 170 pounds (77 kilograms). Following World War II, he went on to play baseball professionally in the Negro leagues. He was a member of the minor league Nashville Black Vols and Asheville Blues, as well as the big league Birmingham Black Barons, where he was a teammate of Willie Mays.

During his time with the 1948 Black Barons, Greason pitched eight games and compiled a record of 3–2 with an earned run average of 4.44. He also threw four complete games, one shutout, and one save. According to Baseball Reference, Greason’s record was favorable. During that particular season, he triumphed against the Homestead Grays, who were on their way to becoming the champions of the Negro League World Series, to secure Birmingham’s only win during the five-game series.

Between the years 1950 and 1951, he was also a member of the Charros de Jalisco, a racially mixed Mexican League team that competed in the independent Mexican League (unrelated to “Organized Baseball”). Greason began his career in baseball in the minor leagues in 1952, when he signed with the Oklahoma City Indians of the Double-A Texas League. During his time with the Indians, he won nine of his ten decisions and produced an earned run average of 2.14 innings pitched. In the earlier part of that season, another African-American pitcher, Dave Hoskins of the Dallas Eagles, had successfully integrated the Texas circuit.

The two men competed against one another in a game that took place in Dallas on August 3, 1952. Half of the spectators were members of the black community, and Greason emerged victorious with a score of 3–2. Another good season for Greason in Oklahoma City in 1953 led to his purchase by the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball. Greason would go on to become the second African-American player to play for the Cardinals, following in the footsteps of Tom Alston before him.

Greason was a member of the 1954 Cardinals and participated in three games, two of which he started as a pitcher. His first game, which took place on May 31, was a rain-shortened game against the Chicago Cubs. He allowed five earned runs and five hits throughout three innings, and he ended up taking the loss. In Greason’s subsequent start, he faced the Philadelphia Phillies and failed to record an out while also allowing one earned run to score under his watch. In the last Major League Baseball game of his career, he relieved the New York Giants and tossed a scoreless inning.

Throughout four innings thrown in Major League Baseball, Greason allowed a total of eight hits and six earned runs, while also allowing four bases on balls and two strikeouts. He retired after the 1959 season, having spent the rest of his professional baseball career playing in the Cardinal farm system, which was located in the higher levels of the minor leagues below the major leagues.

Following the conclusion of his playing career, Greason joined the 16th Street Baptist Church as a member. Following the horrifying bombing of his church by the Ku Klux Klan on September 15, 1963, which resulted in the deaths of four children, he attended Birmingham Baptist Bible College and Samford University to prepare himself for a career in the ministry. He began his tenure as pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1971, and he continued to preach there until the year 2023.

The Alabama Black Achievement Awards Gala, which takes place annually, honored Greason with a lifetime achievement award in the year 2011. Greason was one of the members of the Montford Point Marines who received a group Congressional Gold Medal in the year 2012. At Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he has served for more than half a century, Greason has been a consistent figure in the life of his congregation in Birmingham.

Amid their grief, he has served as the officiant for their marriages, christened their children, and supported them emotionally. Those who attend his church assert that he has had an exceptional influence. Greason, on the other hand, led a completely different life for a length of time before becoming a preacher. In his gloomy and quiet study, which is located down the hall at Bethel Baptist, there is a picture of the 1948 pennant celebration of the Birmingham Black Barons of baseball’s Negro leagues. The image is displayed on a shelf that is crammed with antiquated theological volumes. In the middle, a young Greason is beaming with pride.

By the Center for Negro League Baseball Research, Greason, who is 98 years old, is considered to be one of baseball’s “forgotten heroes.” In the championship series of the Negro American League, which took place seventy-five years ago, he defeated the Kansas City Monarchs. Subsequently, he won the Black Barons their only victory in the last Negro World Series, which they ultimately lost to the Homestead Grays.
