Roy Face Bio

Elroy Leon Face, who was born on February 20, 1928, is a former professional baseball relief pitcher from the United States. He is known by the moniker “the Baron of the Bullpen.” Throughout his sixteen-year career in Major League Baseball (MLB), he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates the majority of the time. In addition to being a pioneer in the field of contemporary relief pitching, he was the personification of what came to be known as the closer. He was also the best reliever in the National League up until the late 1960s, and he established several records during his career across the league.

He was the first player in the major leagues to save 20 games more than once, and he led the league three times and finished second three times. In 1959, he established the record for winning percentage in the major leagues with a minimum of 13 decisions (.947), and he also set the record for single-season wins in relief with 18 wins and only one loss. From 1967 until 1986, he was the National League record holder for the most career games pitched (846), and from 1962 to 1982, he was the league record holder for the most career saves (193).

He continues to retain the National League record for career wins in relief (96), and up until 1983, he was the league record holder for the most innings worked in relief throughout his career (1,211+1⁄3). Following his retirement, Face had the third-best record in the history of the big leagues in terms of pitching appearances, behind only Hoyt Wilhelm and Cy Young. Additionally, he held the second-best record in terms of saves, behind only Wilhelm. The Pirates franchise records for career games played (802), as well as saves (188), are both held by him.

The Philadelphia Phillies had first signed Face as an amateur free agency in 1949. However, Branch Rickey picked Face twice, the first time for the Brooklyn Dodgers before to the 1951 season, and then again for Pittsburgh in 1952. In April of 1953, he made his debut, and in 1956, he had 68 games thrown, which led the league and broke the club record of 59 games pitched by Bill Werle in 1951. He also established a contemporary record for the Pirates.

In 1957, he made his first save in ten games, which led to him ranking sixth in the National League. For the first time in his five years as captain, the squad finished in second place in 1958, marking the first time they had finished higher than eighth. In addition to posting his best-earned run average to date with a record of 2.89, Face led the National League in saves with 20 each. Joe Page, a reliever for the Yankees, was the one who taught him how to use the forkball, which was the primary weapon that he used to attain his success.

Following a string of five consecutive triumphs at the close of 1958, Face finished 1959 with an 18–1 record, including 17 consecutive victories to start the year. During the whole span from June 11 to July 12, he did not allow a single run to advance. A record of 5–0 with four saves and an earned run average of 0.38 earned him the title of Player of the Month for June. Even though he did not garner any votes for the Cy Young Award that year, Face completed the year with an earned run average of 2.70 and placed seventh on the ballot for baseball’s Most Valuable Player.

(At that time, the prize was only being considered for those who had received the highest number of votes.) He has surpassed Jim Konstanty’s previous record of 16 victories in relief, which he established in 1950, and now holds the record for the most wins in relief in the big leagues. The winning percentage of.947 that Face achieved was higher than the previous record. In 1937, Johnny Allen set the mark of 938 (15–1). His second season with twenty saves came in 1960 when he tied the previous National League record with twenty-four. Lindy McDaniel, who had established a new record with twenty-six, had previously held the record.

At the same time that the Pirates won their first pennant since 1927, he also led the league in games once more, tying his club record of 68 games. The record would be surpassed by his colleague Pete Mikkelsen in 1966 when he participated in 71 games. Face made history by being the first pitcher in the history of the World Series to save three games in a single series when he did it against the New York Yankees in 1960.

Face entered Game 1 with runners on first and second and none out in the eighth inning, leading 6–2. He retired the side by striking out Mickey Mantle and Bill Skowron and getting Yogi Berra to fly out. After that, he allowed a home run by Elston Howard that scored two runs in the ninth inning, but he got a double play that ended the game, resulting in a victory by a score of 6–4. In the seventh inning of Game 4, he entered the game with two runners on base and one out while the team was ahead 3–2. He retired all eight of the guys he faced.

In Game 5, he was sent in once again with two hitters on base and one out in the seventh inning. This time, the team was winning 4–2, and he retired eight of the final nine batters, allowing just a walk to Mantle. When he was sent in for the decisive Game 7 with two on and none out in the sixth inning, he was facing a 4–1 advantage, which he gave up as a result of an RBI single by Mantle and a three-run home run by Berra.
