Barry Sonnenfeld Bio

Born on April 1, 1953, in New York City to Jewish parents Irene Kelly and Sonny Sonnerfeldin, Barry Sonnenfeld is known for having a “stereotypically overprotective” upbringing. The elementary school he went to had an art instructor who was his mother. The Broadway Lighting Master Classes, now owned by Live Design, were developed by his legendary father.

Sonnenfeld always had a thing for fireworks, even as a kid. While attempting to create a super magnet, he once destroyed the entire electrical system of his Washington Heights building. Another time, Sonnenfeld and his pals used paper and a magnifying lens to start a fire in the sewer, igniting “100 years’ worth of garbage.”

Sonnenfeld endured a dreadful time at ‘Eleanor Roosevelt Junior High,’ where he was the target of relentless abuse, before enrolling at ‘The High School of Music and Art,’ where he played the French horn and eventually performed with an all-city symphony ensemble. Sonnenfeld went on to study political science at “New York University” after graduating from high school.

Sonnenfeld’s mother insisted that he enroll in the New York University Film School in Greenwich Village after he was rejected from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, so he did just that and earned his degree in 1978. Sonnenfeld tells a humorous version of the story in which his overprotective mother threatened to kill herself if he attended a “sleep-away” school. Films by American director, producer, and former cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld include the critically acclaimed “Men in Black,” “The Addams Family,” and “Wild Wild West,” among others. Sonnenfeld had aspirations of being a photojournalist when he was a young man growing up in New York City with his stereotypically Jewish family.

Sonnenfeld began his career with low-budget pornographic films once he figured out the camera in film school. After meeting the Coen brothers, with whom he worked as a cinematographer on the 1990s films “Blood Simple,” “Raising Arizona,” and “Miller’s Crossing,” he completely changed his life. In his first film as a filmmaker, ‘The Addams Family,’ he established a new and peculiar approach to weird cinema. Although Sonnenfeld was forced to leave ‘Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,’ the project eventually found its way back to him as a web series on ‘Netflix’ 13 years later, in 2017.

Before reaching the heights of Hollywood success, Sonnenfeld had to slog through the filth of low-budget pornographic films. Sonnenfeld acknowledges the value of his past experience filming nine pornographic movies in nine days, during which he had to be extremely methodical and efficient.

Around the same time, he met Joel Coen at a ‘New York University alumni party. During this period, Coen was helping Sam Raimi with the editing of the cult classic horror film The Evil Dead and planning another bloody masterpiece, Blood Simple. The Coen brothers’ first feature film had Sonnenfeld behind the camera. He had already collaborated with Robert Chappell on the documentary ‘In Our Water’, which was nominated for an ‘Academy Award.

Sonnenfeld worked as a cinematographer on Frank Perry’s ‘Compromising Positions’ in 1985, and he continued to collaborate with Joel Coen on ‘Rising Arizona,’ which was released in 1987. Three O’Clock High and Throw Momma from the Train were both released the same year, both of which included his collaborations with Phil Joanou and Danny DeVito.Sonnenfeld met producer Scott Rudin on the sets of “Misery,” and Rudin ended up being another major influence on his career in Hollywood alongside the Coen brothers.

Rudin, he says, “is the single best producer around.” Rudin had previously approached Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam about directing ‘The Addams Family’, but ultimately settled on cinematographer Sonnenfeld, who had never shown any interest in directing before taking on the job.

The sequel to the groundbreaking hit ‘The Addams Family,’ ‘Addams Family Values’, was not a financial success. People did, however, appreciate Sonnenfeld’s eccentric fashion and technology. Sonnenfeld’s debut romantic comedy, ‘For Love or Money,’ starring Michael J. Fox and Gabrielle Anwar, also premiered that year. One of Sonnenfeld’s many Elmore Leonard adaptations is the gangster comedy-thriller ‘Get Shorty,’ which was released in 1995. Besides directing the pilot episode of the series, he also served as executive producer on Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Out of Sight’ and on the television adaptation of ‘Maximum Bob’.

After Quentin Tarantino and John Landis turned down the opportunity to helm “Men in Black,” producers Steven Spielberg and Walter F. Parkes, and Laurie McDonald approached Sonnenfeld while he was still working on “Get Shorty” in 1995. Sonnenfeld recognized a hidden gem in Ed Solomon’s writing that the rest of the team had overlooked. But he wanted to replace Chris O’Donnell and Clint Eastwood, Spielberg’s original choice of actors, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

When ‘Men in Black’ was released in 1997, it propelled Sonnenfeld to stardom. Sonnenfeld was not happy with the creative direction the 2002 and 2012 sequels took, but the cultural mystery surrounding the franchise helped both films gross over a billion dollars worldwide. Leaving “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” a film adaptation of Daniel Handler’s books, was a crushing blow to Sonnenfeld in 2004. Disagreements about the direction of the project existed from the start.

The fact that Paramount and DreamWorks teamed up to replace Scott Rudin with the “MIB” producers was the final straw for Sonnenfeld. Sonnenfeld finally had the chance to direct the Netflix series “A Series of Unfortunate Events” after waiting for 13 years.
