Jay Roach Bio

Roach grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a father who worked in the military. In 1975, he earned his diploma from Eldorado High. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from Stanford in 1980 and a master’s degree in film production from USC in 1986.

Game Change, an HBO film about the McCain/Palin campaign of 2008, was released in March 2012 and quickly became one of the network’s most successful films ever. The film also earned him a Golden Globe, a Peabody Award, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special. Also, he directed Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, and Mystery, Alaska, in addition to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers in Goldmember, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

The 1986 film Odyssey was his first professional gig in the film industry. Later in his career, Roach made the transition to television, where he co-produced and served as a second unit director on the science fiction adaption of Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat called Lifepod. He also authored and served as an associate producer for the 1994 picture Blown Away, which starred Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones. That same year, he co-produced the TV series Space Rangers.

His first opportunity to helm a full-length motion picture didn’t come until 1997. Mike Myers and Elizabeth Hurley’s smash hit Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Roach and Myers, who had just 17 million to work with, were taken aback by the film’s success and released a sequel two years later. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, a sequel, beat off the highly anticipated Star Wars prequel to become the weekend’s highest-grossing film with over $54 million.

In 1997, he was chosen to direct “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”, a low-budget comedy starring Mike Myers as a spy from swinging London who is thawed out in the present to assist beat his old adversary, Dr. Evil. Roach’s familiarity with 1960s film conventions helped “Powers” succeed as both a raucous, proudly juvenile comedy full of tired double entendres and a knowing spoof of James Bondesque spy cinema; for example, there were several musical numbers in the style of “Hullabaloo” that featured his real-life wife, Bangles leader Suzanna Hoffs. The film’s success both in theaters and on home media meant that a sequel was inevitable. Earning nearly $310 million worldwide, “Austin Powers in The Spy Who Shagged Me” profited from a larger budget that enabled a Grammy-winning single by Madonna.

Director Jay Roach took a break from the “Powers” series to helm the more subdued comedy “Mystery, Alaska”, starring Hollywood rookie Russell Crowe as the sheriff of a small town in the 50th State who forms a hockey team to play the visiting New York Rangers. In spite of a star-studded ensemble that included Hank Azaria, Burt Reynolds, and Mary McCormick, the film was a box office bomb. Following this, Roach directed “Meet the Parents”, a hilarious comedy of manners about a mild-mannered male nurse who constantly finds himself at odds with his new father-in-law, a tough CIA agent masquerading as a florist.

This was Roach’s return to the broader comedy style of his “Powers” pictures. The picture had the biggest opening weekend of any of De Niro’s films and was the seventh most-grossing release of that year, both of which were produced by De Niro and Roach. Despite his newfound fame, Roach stuck with the “Powers” movies by directing the third installment, “Austin Powers in Goldmember”. Although it had all the hallmarks of its forerunners, “The Spy Who Shagged Me” did not do as well at the box office or win over as many fans. The addition of Destiny’s Child star Beyonce Knowles as blaxploitation hero Foxy Cleopatra and the presence of Michael Caine as Austin’s similarly racy father were two of the film’s many highlights.

Roach had to step down from directing 50 First Dates, starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and a film adaptation of the popular science fiction novel and television series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” due to scheduling conflicts with the production of the “Meet the Parents” sequel. However, he maintained his role as producer on both films, which earned well at the box office.

Much of his time in 2003 and 2004 was devoted to filming the “Parents” sequel, which was dubbed “Meet the Fockers” after the awful last name of Stiller’s character. The comedy, which also starred Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand as Stiller’s chill parents, did phenomenal business when it was released around the 2004 holidays. With a worldwide total of over $516,000,000, Roach became the director of the most financially successful comedy picture of all time.

For the following four years after that, Roach refrained from directing anything other than the TV benefit special “Earth to America”, for which he received dual credit. However, both “Smother”  and “Charlie Barnett”, both of which he produced, were quickly forgotten by audiences after their limited releases.
