The members of OutKast all went to the same Atlanta high school and became friends there. “André 3000,” whose real name is Andre Benjamin, came into the world that year. His mom, Sharon Benjamin Hodo, was a real estate agent, and his dad, Lawrence Walker, was a debt collector. He went by the moniker “Big Boi,” and his parents were a Marine Corps veteran and a store manager. Antwan and Antwan were of the same age. Both of them enrolled in Tri-Cities High School, an East Point, Georgia institution catering to students with an eye on a future in the performing arts.
They claimed that many of their classmates did not immediately recognize them due to the exceedingly preppy wardrobe choices they had made for themselves. De La Soul, Brand Nubian, and A Tribe Called Quest were some of their favorite out-there hip-hop bands, which they both shared with one another. In addition, they were fans of ’70s funk artists like George Clinton and Sly and the Family Stone. Yet music was the original glue that brought them together as friends.
It wasn’t long before Benjamin and Patton were in the studio making their own rap tracks and putting out mixtapes. Two Shades Deep was their first band name of choice until they realized it was already in use. Misfits were already taken, so they had to come up with a new name. They looked up the word “misfit” in the dictionary and decided that “outcast” better described them. Despite this, they continue to use the phonetic “k” spelling recommended by the dictionary.
Both Benjamin and Patton acknowledge that they were defiant teenagers; Benjamin, in particular, did not complete his junior year at Tri-Cities High School. They persisted in trying to find an opening in the music business against the odds. They were fortunate enough to stumble into it when they connected with a group of producers from Atlanta known as Organized Noize. This band worked with TLC in the studio to create the smash hit “Waterfalls” in 1994.
It took them nearly three years to release their next studio album after their last one. Long-awaited, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below was finally released to the public late in September of 2003, narrowly missing the deadline for Grammy consideration. Album of the Year, Best Rap Album, and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for “Hey Ya!” were all awarded at the Grammys in February of the following year. The album’s lead track from Patton’s more conventional rap effort, Speakerboxxx, charted widely.
Andre’s album, “The Love Below,” is the more funk-oriented of the two. When we first met Benjamin, he was creating music for a film version of a Paris-set love story. Several critics said the CDs tried to achieve too much by incorporating too many different styles, while others praised the overall impression they gave. Fans of OutKast were concerned that the publication of the split album would signal the demise of the group because its two members are both pursuing their own musical interests at the moment.
Benjamin and Patton maintained that they were still a team despite their disagreements. From the movie Jet: “Both tracks are OutKast records,” Patton says to Marti Yarbrough. You see them from two perspectives, and that’s pretty much it. After knowing the other two men since they were in high school together, Patton was able to run the business end of the partnership from his home in Fayetteville, Georgia.
There are no new musical projects in the works for André 3000 at the moment, but he is dusting off his acting chops in front of his role in the upcoming Netflix film White Noise. In this gripping drama, a contemporary American family deals with love, death, and the search for happiness in a world full of mysteries. The trailer for White Noise, a depiction of a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with ordinary concerns, is billed as “at once amusing and dreadful, lyrical and absurd, commonplace and apocalyptic” by the streaming service.
The Driver and his family are shown sitting in heavy weather and traffic in the official trailer. What does it matter, the question is posed to the driver, about the actions of those in other vehicles. When asked how terrified he or she should be, one child replies, “I simply want to know.” A montage of events, set to foreboding music, is presented, although it discloses very nothing about the story.
Noah Baumbach, the film’s writer, and director, said, “I read Don DeLillo’s novel in college in the late ’80s, and it seemed like today, or the now and then.” Baumbach was making a reference to how the book made him feel at the time. The absurdity, tragedy, and craziness that characterized 1950s America are all shown brilliantly. My reaction upon reading it again in the early months of the year 2020 was the same as it had been upon first reading. Nevertheless, in the present moment of time that we are in. A few weeks later, everything on Earth froze. I wanted to make a cinematic adaptation of the novel because I wanted to make something as fantastical as my view of the universe at the time.
Supreme’s latest collaborator is Andre 3000. The photos by Deana Lawson show the Outkast member wearing an olive jacket, large sunglasses, a red hat, a boxy white T-shirt from Supreme, and baggy pinstripe overalls. In the 2003 music video for “Vibrate,” the rapper emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s own artistic vision. The rapper spent the entire brief playing his characteristic flute.
