Akinnuoye-Agbaje was conceived under the shadow of the Upper Street firehouse in Islington, London. He was born in London to parents who originally hail from Nigeria. He is multilingual and able to communicate with ease in numerous tongues, including English, Italian, Yorùbá, and Swahili. A similar role as a shady adulterer occurred in the music video for “Jealousy,” by the Pet Shop Boys, around the same time.

He is well-known for his roles as Mr. Eko on ABC’s Lost and as felon Simon Adebisi on HBO’s prison series Oz. Since he began acting in 1994, he has racked up an impressive list of film credits and acted in many critically acclaimed films, including The Bourne Identity, in which he played an overthrown African dictator. He’s also promised to helm a biopic based on his life. On September 2, 2006, he was apprehended in Honolulu, Hawaii for driving a car without a license and disobeying a police officer. The bail was $500, and he was freed six hours later. With the presentation of his driver’s license, the accusations against him were dropped on September 26, 2006.

He goes by “Wálé” inside his family, but “Triple A” among those who have difficulties pronouncing his name. His nickname in school was “Wally Badger.” The filming of the Akinnuoye-first Agbaje movie, Farming, concluded in 2017, and it premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje was born to Nigerian parents of Yoruba descent who were studying in the UK and settled in Islington. His birth parents abandoned him when he was just a few weeks old, and he was taken in by a white working-class family in Tilbury, Essex. At one point, Akinnuoye-two Agbaje’s sisters, and at least eight other African children were living with his foster parents. His adoptive dad was a truck worker who scraped by to provide for the family.

His biological parents took him back to Nigeria when he was eight years old, but he was quickly sent back to Tilbury since he couldn’t speak Yoruba and was banned to speak English. In spite of his brief time in Nigeria, he found it difficult to reconcile his Nigerian roots with his upbringing in modern Britain. A young youngster struggling with his ethnic identity eventually joined a local skinhead group to avoid further racial persecution.

After succumbing to a life of crime at age 16, his foster parents transferred him to a Surrey boarding school, where he eventually attempted suicide before facing his history and making a full recovery. He continued his education at King’s College London, where he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree, and at the University of London, where he received a Master of Laws degree. Akinnuoye-Agbaje got his start in the modeling industry while working at a clothing store as a college student.

After beginning his career as a model, Akinnuoye-Agbaje moved to Hollywood and made his acting debut in the 1995 film Congo. His roles as the intimidating convict Simon Adebisi in the 1990s HBO prison series Oz and as Mr. Eko on the ABC survivor drama Lost are his most well-known. In The Bourne Identity, he portrayed an ousted African ruler; in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, he was a police officer named Hitu; in The Mummy Returns, he was named Lock-Nah; and in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, he was called Heavy Duty.

In addition, in 1989, he appeared in the music video for Grayson Hugh’s smash hit “Talk It Over,” which was shown often on MTV and VH-1. In 2009, Marvel Studios approached Akinnuoye-Agbaje about playing the title character in a film adaptation of the comic book of the same name. Speaking on the opportunity, he said, “when I’m in my prime, this is the time. I’m going to keep pounding on their door” and that “the timing is so good” for a black superhero.

Though Chadwick Boseman was cast as the lead role, Marvel did announce a Black Panther picture in 2014. He played Derek Jameson in The Thing, released in 2011, and appeared in the second episode of season 8 of Monk. As Kurse, he appeared in Thor: The Dark World, a film produced by Marvel Studios. For Season 5 of “Game of Thrones,” he played Malko. It was announced in 2015 that Akinnuoye-Abaje would be lending his voice to the main character in Bilal, a biopic about the life of Bilal Ibn Rabah.
