Samia Suluhu Hassan is a Tanzanian politician who has served as the President of Tanzania since March 19, 2021. He was born on January 27, 1960, and has held this position since that day. In the history of the position, she is the first woman to hold it. Previously, she held the position of Vice President of Tanzania during the years 2015 to 2021. It was from this position that she went on to become President of Tanzania after the passing of her predecessor, John Magufuli.
Between the years 2000 and 2010, Suluhu, who was born and raised in Zanzibar, held the position of minister in the semi-autonomous area. After that, she was a member of parliament for the Makunduchi seat from 2010 to 2015, and she also held the position of minister of state in the Vice President’s Office for Union Affairs from 2010 until 2015. The Constituent Assembly, which is responsible for developing the new constitution for the nation, elected her to the position of vice-chairperson in 2014.
In the aftermath of the general election in 2015, Suluhu became Tanzania’s first female vice president. She was elected on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi platform with Magufuli, who was the winning candidate. During the year 2020, Suluhu and Magufuli were both re-elected to serve a second term. In her role as president, Suluhu has pursued democratic changes, therefore reversing the practices that her predecessor had implemented to suppress political dissent.
In addition to this, she put into effect measures that would prevent the COVID-19 epidemic from spreading further in Tanzania, which Magufuli had previously denied was a significant problem. In addition, throughout her administration, she has prioritized the development of Tanzania’s infrastructure as well as the globalization of the Tanzanian economy via the participation of investors and tourists. On a part-time basis, Suluhu participated in a variety of short and intensive courses.
With an advanced certificate in public administration, she received her degree from the Institute of Development Management, which is now known as Mzumbe University, in the year 1986. She received a postgraduate certificate in economics after her studies at the University of Manchester, which she attended between the years 1992 and 1994. The Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University collaborated on a curriculum that allowed her to get a Master of Science degree in Community Economic Development in the year 2015.
Suluhu decided to run for public office in the year 2000. Having been elected to the Zanzibar House of Representatives with the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, she was named Zanzibar’s Minister for Youth Employment, Women, and Children. She was a special seat member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives. During her tenure in this role, she put a stop to the policy that prohibited new moms from going back to school.
Even though she was the only woman minister in the cabinet with a high-ranking position, her male colleagues did not take her as seriously as they should have since she was a woman. Not only did she win re-election in 2005, but she also received a position as Minister of Tourism and Trade Investment. Suluhu ran for election to the National Assembly in 2010, choosing to run in the Makunduchi parliamentary seat. He was successful in winning the election by a margin of more than 80 percent.
Jakaya Kikwete, the President of Kenya, nominated her to the position of Minister of State for Union Affairs. Her election to the position of Vice-Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly, which is responsible for creating the new constitution for the nation, took place in 2014.
Both John Magufuli, who was running for president, and Suluhu, who was running for vice president, were candidates for the CCM in the general election that took place in September 2015. Because numerous other notable and significant politicians were passed over for the post, her selection came as a complete surprise.
It was the first time in the history of the party that a female candidate was a running partner. They successfully won the election, and on November 5, 2015, they took their oath of office. The first woman to ever hold the position of Vice President of Tanzania was Suluhu. In 2016, a disagreement arose between Magufuli and Suluhu, during which Suluhu cast doubt on Magufuli’s allegiance. However, Suluhu responded by making public declarations in favor of Magufuli.
Magufuli and Suluhu were both re-elected in the general election that took place in 2020; however, the legitimacy of their win was called into doubt when independent observers were accused of engaging in electoral fraud. Following a protracted illness, Magufuli passed away on March 17, 2021, according to an announcement made by Suluhu. Magufuli has not been seen in public since the end of February. On the 19th of March in 2021, she took the oath of office to fulfill the remaining portion of his second term.
After the 18th of March had gone without Suluhu being sworn in, the leaders of the opposition had stated their alarm about the possibility of a vacuum. Almost immediately after taking the oath of office, Suluhu went to observe the soldiers who were participating in a military parade celebrating her. In the first speech she made as president, Suluhu expressed her condolences for Magufuli’s passing and established a period of mourning that would last for three weeks. In the role of vice president, she selected Philip Mpango, who is the Minister of Finance.
As Suluhu was becoming president, the COVID-19 epidemic was still running strong. When it came to the COVID-19 pandemic in Tanzania, she overturned Magufuli’s denialist stance, and she also enrolled Tanzania in the COVAX program, which would allow for the delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations to commence in July of 2021. Travelers entering Tanzania from countries where there have been occurrences of newly emerging forms of SARS-CoV-2 are required to undergo mandatory quarantines for around fourteen days.
