Nikos Christodoulides Bio

Since his birth on December 6, 1973, Nikos Christodoulides has been a Cypriot politician, a former diplomat, and an academic. He is now serving as the eighth and current President of Cyprus. Under the administration of President Nicos Anastasiades, he had previously held the positions of Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2022 and Spokesman of the Government from 2014 as well.

Christodoulides began his professional life in the field of diplomacy in the year 1999. Between the years 2007 and 2010, he also served as a professor and researcher at the University of Cyprus. In the following years, he served in the cabinet of President Anastasiades throughout his second term, until he resigned in January 2022 to compete for the presidency of Cyprus in the election that would take place in 2023.

After winning the runoff election against Andreas Mavroyiannis, he took office on February 28, 2023, making him the first leader of the island to be born in an independent Cyprus. After completing his mandatory two-year military duty in the Cypriot National Guard in 1993, he received his diploma from Archbishop Makarios III Lyceum in Paphos in the year 1991.

Before receiving his degree in 1997, Christodoulides had his education at Queens College, which is part of the City University of New York. He majored in Political Science, Economics, and Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. After completing his undergraduate degree, he went on to pursue postgraduate studies in political science at New York University and Diplomatic Studies at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC), which is under the University of Malta.

The year 1999 saw Christodoulides’s entry into the diplomatic service. He served in several positions, including Director of the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Spokesman of the Cyprus Presidency to the Council of the European Union in Brussels, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Cyprus to Greece, among others.

Both the Director of the Office of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consul-General of the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus to the United Kingdom, one individual holds both of these positions. He was the Director of the Diplomatic Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus from 2013 till 2018, during which time he filled that role.

The appointment of Christodoulides to the Cabinet as Minister of Foreign Affairs took place on March 1, 2018, after the re-election of President Anastasiades. He indicated on March 6, 2018, that Nicosia will not be misled by Turkey’s intrusions into the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus. He said this in response to a question. During a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to discuss cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, he said that the “number one goal is the reunification of the country.”

In May 2018, Christodoulides made a formal request to the United Nations, requesting that they make preparations for a lightning-fast restart of the process of reunification. On May 7, 2018, after meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias, he expressed his appreciation to Secretary-General António Guterres for sending a United Nations Special Representative to get a sense of the climate around the possibility of restarting discussions.

He paid a visit to Israel in June of 2018, during which he had meetings with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. Additionally, they addressed the improvement of bilateral cooperation in the areas of energy and emergency circumstances, as well as developments in the region. Additionally, they highlighted Turkish intrusions as well as strategic collaboration about the EastMed pipeline that is now in the planning stages.

The revelation that ExxonMobil executives would be accelerating their timeline to commence drilling operations in Block 10 of the Exclusive Economic Zone was something that received positive feedback from Christodoulides in June of 2018. Even though operations were supposed to start in the fourth quarter of 2018, they didn’t start until 2021.

He met with the High Representative of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, in Brussels on July 17, 2018. A possible role for the European Union in restarting peace negotiations with Turkey was one of the topics that they considered. In the course of his visit, Christodoulides made the statement that Cyprus “does not have the luxury of a new talks’ failure” and that “Turkey has to comply with European standards and international law.”

On July 15, 2020, he made a statement on the skirmishes that occurred between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the year 2020. He condemned the “ceasefire violation by Azerbaijan” and called for “restraint of the parties to de-escalate the tension in the region.”On the 5th of April in the year 2021, President Aleksandar Vučić bestowed onto Christodoulides the Order of the Serbian Flag, honoring him with the title of Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.

Christodoulides showed his interest in running for president of Cyprus in the 2023 election at a news conference that took place on January 9 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This came after months of speculation on whether or not he would compete for the presidency of Cyprus. On January 11, 2022, he resigned from his position as Minister the next day, and on the same day, experienced politician Ioannis Kasoulides took his place.

Even though he was a member of DISY, which campaigned for Averof Neofytou as its presidential contender, he made a public announcement in June 2022 that he would be running for office as an independent candidate. After he had officially submitted his candidacy on January 5, 2023, the leadership council of DISY legally expelled him from the party. This occurred after he had filed his candidacy.

Christodoulides was successful in swaying a significant number of People’s Democratic Party (DISY) followers while also garnering support from minor parties like DIKO, EDEK, and DIPA. Following his victory in the first round of the presidential election, which he won with 32.04 percent of the vote, President Anastasiades endorsed him throughout the contest. After Christodoulides won the second round of voting with 51.92% of the vote, he was proclaimed the winner of the presidential election. Andreas Mavroyiannis, an independent candidate supported by the AKEL, received 48.08% of the vote.
