Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, also known as Rodri or Rodrigo, was born on June 22, 1996, and is a professional footballer from Spain. He currently plays as a defensive midfielder for Manchester City in the Premier League as well as for the Spain national team. He is widely considered one of the top defensive midfielders in the world due to his excellent passing, tackles, strength, long shoots, and work rate. Rodri has previous appearances in La Liga with Villarreal and Atlético Madrid before joining the Premier League team Manchester City in 2019.
Through his contributions, the squad was able to win the league championship in each of the next three seasons: 2020–21, 2021–22, and 2022–23. In the 2022–23 season, Rodri was a member of the City team that won the club’s first-ever continental treble. This accomplishment occurred during his time with the club. This treble featured a first-ever victory in the UEFA Champions League. Rodri scored the game’s lone goal in the championship game, and he was later honored as the tournament’s Player of the Season.
Rodri has represented Spain at the senior and junior levels of international competition. He was selected to play for his country at both the UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup 2022 after making his debut with the senior national squad in 2018. In addition, he was awarded the best player at the finals event of the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League and won that competition as well. Being a native of Madrid, Rodri moved to the youth program of Atletico Madrid in 2007, when he was 11 years old, from CF Rayo Majadahonda. After being let go in 2013 owing to a “lack of physical strength,” he eventually joined Villarreal CF as a player.
Rodri made his senior debut with the reserves on February 7, 2015, when he was still a youngster. He entered the game as a late substitute during the reserves’ 3–1 victory over RCD Espanyol B in the away matchup of the Segunda División B. After waiting another 15 days, he made his debut in a game that Real Zaragoza B won by a score of 2-0. On December 17, 2015, Rodri made his debut with the first team, starting at home in a victory over SD Huesca for that season’s Copa del Rey match. The game ended with a score of 2-0. On April 17, 2016, he made his debut in La Liga when he entered the game in the second half as a replacement for Denis Suarez during the team’s 2–1 loss on the road against Rayo Vallecano.
Rodri renewed his contract on December 4th, 2017, taking it all the way through 2022 after he had already established himself as a regular. On February 18, 2018, he scored his first goal in the top level of competition in Spain. It was the opening goal in an away tie against RCD Espanyol that ended 1–1. Rodri was allowed to return to Atlético on May 24, 2018, after an agreement for his move had been reached between the club and Villarreal. He agreed to play for the Madrid club for the next five years, for a transfer fee that was perhaps in the neighborhood of €20 million plus another 5 million in variables. He made his debut on August 15, 2018, in the UEFA Super Cup, which was held in Tallinn. He played for the first 71 minutes of the team’s 4–2 victory over city rivals Real Madrid in extra time.
Rodri was able to buy out the remaining portion of his contract with Atlético Madrid and depart the club when Manchester City satisfied the terms of his £62.6 million release clause on July 3, 2019. This allowed him to leave the club. The amount that Manchester City spent on the transfer set a new all-time high. A contract for a period of five years was signed by him. On August 4, 2019, Rodri made his debut for City in the FA Community Shield match against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium. He participated in all ninety minutes of the match, which ended 1–1 and was decided by penalty kicks. Six days later, he made his debut in the Premier League against West Ham United in a 5–0 away win, then on the 14th of September, he scored his first goal in a 3–2 away defeat against Norwich City. Both games took place away from home.
An injury to Rodri’s hamstring forced the team to make the announcement in October 2019 that he would be sidelined for one month. Wembley Stadium was the location of the EFL Cup final on March 1, 2020, and City’s victory over Aston Villa by a score of 2–1 gave them their third consecutive title. Rodri scored City’s second goal, which ultimately turned out to be the game-winning goal, after heading the ball in off of a corner. On the 13th of February 2021, Rodri scored the first goal for City from the penalty spot in a home victory over Tottenham Hotspur. The final score was 3–0.
Rodri had the highest pass completion percentage of any midfielder in the Premier League during the domestic campaign of 2021–22, with 91.8% successful passes per 90 minutes. He had proven to be an essential component in City’s triumphant run to the title during that season. Rodri signed an extension to his contract with Manchester City on July 12, 2022, making it valid until July 12, 2027. On April 11, 2023, he scored his first goal in the Champions League during the first leg of the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium.
The match ended in a 3–0 victory for Manchester City. On June 10, he scored the solitary goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan, ensuring that Manchester City would win their first-ever European Cup and complete the continental treble. Inter Milan was the team that Manchester City faced in the final. A vote was taken, and Rodri came out on top as the tournament’s Player of the Season. He was given the Man of the Match award. Rodri had previously competed for Spain at the under-16, under-19, and under-21 levels.
On March 16, 2018, he was selected to play for Spain’s full national team for the first time in two friendlies against Germany and Argentina. Five days later, he was given his first professional start as he came on as a substitute for Thiago Alcantara late in Brazil’s 1–1 draw against Germany in Dusseldorf. Rodri was selected to be a member of Luis Enrique’s 24-man squad that will compete in the UEFA Euro 2020 and the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
