Roberta Flack Bio

The 10th of February, 1937 saw the birth of Roberta Cleopatra Flack an American singer who topped the Billboard charts with the number one songs “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Where Is the Love,” and “The Closer I Get to You,” the latter two of which were duets with Donny Hathaway. Flack interpreted songs written by other artists, such as Leonard Cohen and members of the Beatles, and had a significant influence on the present R&B style known as quiet storm.

She was raised in a large family that loved music, and she often played the piano to accompany the choir at Lomax African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church by playing hymns and spirituals. However, she also enjoyed going to the “Baptist church down the street” to listen to contemporary gospel music, including songs performed by Mahalia Jackson and Sam Cooke. During her childhood, she was surrounded by a large family that loved music. When Flack was nine years old, she first showed an interest in learning how to play the piano. Flack achieved a high level of proficiency in classical piano when she was still in her early teens, and as a result, Howard University granted her a full music scholarship.

She attended Howard University when she was just 15 years old, making her one of the youngest students to ever enroll at that institution. In the end, she decided that she wanted to study voice rather than piano, and she began working as an assistant conductor for the university choir. Her directing of a performance of Aida was so impressive that the academic members at Howard University stood to applaud her. After moving back to Washington, D.C., Roberta Flack worked as a teacher at the Banneker, Browne, and Rabaut Junior High Schools. This was before she began her career as a professional singer-songwriter. In addition to that, she ran a private piano instruction business out of her home on Euclid Street NW in the city.

During this period, her musical career started to take form in the evenings and on the weekends in local night places in the Washington, D.C. region. In a nightclub in Washington, D.C., Les McCann first heard Roberta Flack singing and playing jazz. Later, he said in the liner notes of what would become her first album titled First Take, which is mentioned below, “Her voice touched, tapped, trapped, and kicked every emotion I’ve ever known.” She was the only one who had the voice, and it made me laugh, cry, and demand more. Very soon, he arranged for her to have an audition with Atlantic Records, during which she performed a total of 42 songs for the producer Joel Dorn over the course of three hours. In November of 1968, she quickly recorded 39 song demos in a span of less than ten hours. After three months, Atlantic apparently only spent ten hours recording Roberta Flack’s first album, which was titled First Take.

In 1971, Roberta Flack was a member of the iconic concert film Soul to Soul, which was directed by Denis Sanders and included a variety of artists, including Wilson Pickett, Ike & Tina Turner, Santana, The Staple Singers, Les McCann, Eddie Harris, The Voices of East Harlem, and others. Flack was featured with Pickett. A group of musical musicians from the United States was invited to play in Ghana for the celebration of the 14th anniversary of Africa’s independence. In 2004, the movie was republished digitally on DVD and CD, however, Flack did not provide permission for her picture or recording to be included in the release for reasons that are now unclear. It is only possible to see her a cappella rendition of the classic spiritual “Oh Freedom,” which was renamed “Freedom Song” on the original Soul to Soul LP soundtrack. This performance can only be found on the VHS version of the movie.

In 1972, Flack’s rendition of “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” reached position 76 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release. Her Atlantic recordings did not do particularly well in terms of sales until actor and director Clint Eastwood chose a song from her album First Take, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” written by Ewan MacColl, for the soundtrack of his directorial debut Play Misty for Me. This song went on to become the biggest hit of the year for 1972, spending six consecutive weeks at No. 1, earning Flack a million-selling Gold disc, and was featured in the film.

It was at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart at the end of 1972. Additionally, the album First Take reached the top spot on the charts and ultimately sold 1.9 million copies in the United States. Since then, Eastwood has continued to be a fan of Flack’s and a friend of hers, despite the fact that he paid $2,000 for the use of the song in the film. It was recognized as the best recording of that year and given a Grammy Award in 1973. At Eastwood’s urging, she made a recording of the closing theme for the Dirty Harry movie Sudden Impact in the year 1983.

In 1972, Roberta Flack started working frequently with Donny Hathaway in the recording studio. Together, they were responsible for a number of songs, including “Where Is the Love”, which was nominated for a Grammy, and “The Closer I Get to You”, which sold over one million copies combined. Up until Hathaway’s death in 1979, Flack and Hathaway collaborated on a number of duet recordings, including two albums’ worth of material.

She was the pianist that provided accompaniment for opera singers at the Tivoli Club. She would perform blues, folk, and pop tunes in the rear area of the venue while accompanying herself on the piano during the intermissions. After that, she gave performances at the 1520 Club many times per week, with her own piano accompaniment each time. Around this time, her vocal instructor Frederick “Wilkie” Wilkerson informed her that he saw a stronger future for her in pop music than in the classics. He said that he saw a brighter future for her in pop music than in the classics. Flack adapted her repertoire to reflect these changes, and as a result, her renown grew. In 1968, she was recruited to sing on a daily basis at Mr. Henry’s Restaurant, which was located on Capitol Hill in Washington, District of Columbia. This was the beginning of her career as a professional singer.

Flack started working as a student teacher in a school in the Maryland area, close to Chevy Chase. She received her bachelor’s degree in music from Howard University when she was 19 years old and started graduate school in music, but the unexpected passing of her father compelled her to instead accept a job instructing music and English in Farmville, North Carolina.
