Neil Druckmann is an Israeli-American writer, creative director, designer, and programmer. He was born on December 5, 1978, and is a dual citizen of the United States and Israel. Since the year 2020, he has served as co-president of the video game developer Naughty Dog, together with Evan Wells. He is perhaps most recognized for his contributions to the video game series Uncharted and The Last of Us, the latter of which he co-created with Naughty Dog.
The first time that Druckmann worked on a video game was as an intern for Naughty Dog. In 2004, he began working as a programmer on Jak 3 (2004) and Jak X: Combat Racing (2005). After that, in 2005, he transitioned into the role of designer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (2007). The storyline for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009), which he co-wrote with Amy Hennig and Josh Scherr, was lauded and won a number of awards. He was a co-lead game designer for the game and helped to write the story. In addition to that, he has created comics, such as the motion comic “Uncharted: Eye of Indra” (2009), as well as the graphic novels “A Second Chance at Sarah” (2010) and “The Last of Us: American Dreams” (2013).
As the writer and creative director of The Last of Us (2013), Druckmann spearheaded the game’s development. He then reprised these duties for The Last of Us: Left Behind (2014) and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016), the latter of which he wrote in collaboration with Scherr. Bruce Straley, with whom Druckmann built a close working relationship, was the director of all three of the games that Druckmann was involved with. The Last of Us is a video game that has been adapted for television, and Druckmann directed the second episode of that adaptation. Craig Mazin and Druckmann are the creators, writers, and executive producers of the adaptation.
In 2018, during the production of The Last of Us Part II (2020), for which he was creative director and co-writer along with Halley Gross, Druckmann was promoted to vice president of Naughty Dog. In 2020, he was promoted to co-president of the company, and in 2021, he was promoted to president of the company. His work as a writer and director on The Last of Us, Uncharted 4, and The Last of Us Part II has garnered him a lot of accolades. The games are routinely considered to have some of the best writing in the industry and have been ranked among the best video games that have ever been produced.
Druckmann has been honored with a number of accolades, including three British Academy Games Awards, two Game Awards, three Game Developers Choice Awards, and four Writers Guild of America Awards, among others. At a young age, his older brother Emanuel introduced him to a variety of entertainment options, including comic books, video games, and movies. He found that learning English was made easier by participating in these types of entertainment, particularly playing video games created by Sierra Entertainment and LucasArts.
As he developed a deeper appreciation for the craft of storytelling, he began penning his own comic comics. In 1989, he relocated to the United States with his family, and he spent his middle school and high school years in the city of Miami, Florida. After that, he decided to pursue a degree in criminology in the hopes of one day being an FBI agent and using that experience in his fiction writing. 2:16 In the late 1990s, his brother got him into E3 through the back door, and he went back to the conference in 1998, 2000, and 2002.
In addition, he went to SIGGRAPH in 2002 and 2003. In the year 2001, while he was a student at Florida State University, he triumphed in a multiplayer tournament for Conker’s Bad Fur Day that was hosted by Nintendo and Playboy. While he was attending school, he held positions as a salesman at PacSun and a clerk at My Favorite Muffin.
Druckmann worked at the Visualization Lab at Florida State University for a year beginning in July 2002 when he was residing in Tallahassee. During that time, he was a graphics research assistant.: 5:46 During this time period, he and a few other pals started designing the game Pink-Bullet for use on Linux and Windows. He had a phase in his life where he wanted to be an animator, but his parents did not want him to pursue that career path because it meant enrolling in art classes. After taking a class in programming, Druckmann recognized that it was his preference, and he started a Bachelor of Computer Science with a minor in math in December 2002. He graduated with honors the following year with a grade point average of 3.61.
Because of his outstanding performance in the classroom, he was inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society. After that, he relocated to Pittsburgh, where he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University and started his master’s degree program in entertainment technology at the Entertainment Technology Center in August 2003. As part of the requirements for the degree, he was required to take a game design class given by Jesse Schell. In this class, he learned philosophies that he would employ in the future.: 10:00 As a student at Carnegie Mellon in April 2004, Druckmann created the video game Dikki Painguin in TKO for the Third Reich for the Nintendo Entertainment System in conjunction with another student at the school named Allan Blomquist.
In 2003, one of Druckmann’s professors covered his expenses so that he could go to the Game Developers Conference (GDC). There, he sat in on a presentation given by Jason Rubin, who would later go on to form Naughty Dog. : 6:36 After Druckmann “bugged” Rubin with his questions, Rubin handed over his business card to Druckmann. After some time had passed, Rubin got in touch with Druckmann and made the unprecedented offer of a position as an intern at Naughty Dog. When Druckmann finally responded, someone else had already accepted the position.: 8:02 Druckmann reached out to Rubin for guidance after being urged to apply for internships by CMU.
In response, Rubin informed Druckmann about a newly available internship at the studio. After an interview with him at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the game director Evan Wells contacted him and offered him the internship. During this time, he had also been given a position as an intern producer at Electronic Arts working on The Sims 2, and he made the offer to Wells in order to conduct an interview with him.: 10:14 Around the same time in 2004, Druckmann started working as a programming intern for Naughty Dog. He started working on Jak 3 (2004), first on the localization tools, and then on the gameplay programming.
During this period, he would also provide aid with extra design projects that needed to be completed. After completing the internship in August, Wells and Stephen White, who served as co-presidents at the time, extended an offer to hire him on a permanent basis.: 13:38 As a result of his employment at Naughty Dog, he was able to fulfill the requirements for the second year of his master’s degree and graduate with the degree in 2005. He was responsible for the programming of the menu screens for Jak X: Combat Racing (2005), which he regarded as one of the most challenging assignments he had ever undertaken in his career.: 16:24 He continued to provide a hand with the less significant design chores whenever it was possible.
