In 1999, his play Side Man was one of the plays that was considered for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama.

Claude Thornhill, Woody Herman, and Buddy Rich were among the jazz performers that his father collaborated with throughout the 1950s by playing piano. Larry Gurovitch, Leight’s uncle, and Harry Gurovitch, Leight’s paternal great-grandfather, were both trumpet players of Russian heritage. Cellist Sarah Gurowitsch was his grandma. She was a cellist.

He spent his childhood on the Upper West Side of Manhattan as well as the Sunnyside neighborhood of the borough of Queens during his upbringing. In 1977, Leight graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication to pursue a career in journalism. In 1980, Leight made his debut as a writer with the horror film Mother’s Day. Subsequently, in 1982, he appeared in the documentary Before the Nickelodeon: The Cinema of Edwin S. Porter, in which he provided the voice of “Terrible Teddy.”

The independent film Stuck on You! (1983), as well as the Miramax picture The Night We Never Met (1993), which he also directed and starred Matthew Broderick in. This film garnered him a nomination at the Deauville Film Festival. In 1996, he penned the script for the comedy directed by Greg Kinnear and titled Dear God.

He was the creative director and writer for a quartet of “witty” female comedians known as the “High Heeled Women” in the 1980s. Among the members of this group was the actress Arleen Sorkin, who was noted for her performances in New York City cabarets. His spouse, Karen Hauser, is the person responsible for the creation of the Internet Broadway Database (IBDB.com) and now works as the Research Director for the Broadway League Organization. Together with their two kids, they make their home in New York City.

Edward Koch and his interactions with Leona Helmsley and Bess Myerson served as the inspiration for Leight’s first stage project, the musical Mayor, which he collaborated on with Charles Strouse, a composer and songwriter. At the Top of the Gate in Greenwich Village, it began on May 13, 1985, and it lasted for a total of 185 performances. On October 23, 1985, the musical moved to the Latin Quarter, which was located farther uptown. It continued to run until January 5, 1986, providing an additional seventy performances.

In the year 1986, he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in the category of Outstanding Book. A “collection of musically influenced monologues” about guys, sometimes known as “cats,” Stray Cats is a compilation of monologues. Kevin Confoy was the director of the production of Stray Cats that took place on May 14, 1998, at the All Season Theatre Group headquarters in New York City. Naked Angels in New York City was the location of the inaugural production, which was a collaborative effort between Jo Bonney and other individuals.

In addition to receiving nominations for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play in 1998, Leight’s play Side Man for the year 1998 earned him the Tony Award for Best Play in 1999. Edie Falco and Frank Wood were the stars of the show.
The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles was the venue that was responsible for producing his play Glimmer, Glimmer & Shine in the year 2001.

During the period beginning on May 24, 2001, and ending on July 8, 2001, the Manhattan Theatre Club staged the production off-Broadway. Evan Yionoulis was the director of both shows, while John Spencer was a part of both of them. He contributed works to The 24 Hour Plays, a one-of-a-kind theatrical event that took place in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2009 (Daily Bread starring Billy Crudup, Rosie Perez, and Rachel Dratch). The 24-Hour Play is a theatrical event in which numerous short plays are written, rehearsed, directed, and produced on stage over twenty-four hours.

In November of 2002, the world premiere of No Foreigners Beyond This Point took place at Center Stage in Baltimore, Maryland. Tim Vasen was the actor in charge of the production. It was on September 17, 1995, at The Culture Project 45 Bleecker Theatre that the play had its debut off-Broadway. The Ma-Yi Theater Company was the production company behind the piece. Loy Arcenas would be the director.

Laura Kai Chen, Ron Domingo, Wai Ching Ho, Francis Jue, Karen Tsen Lee, Abby Royle, Ean Sheehy, and Henry Yuk were among the actors who appeared in the feature film. Leight’s experiences as an English teacher in Guangdong (Canton), China served as the main source of inspiration for the play. For his performance in the Off-Broadway production, he was considered for consideration for the Drama Desk Award in the category of Play in 2006.

In 2002, Leight began his career in television by working as a freelance writer for the program 100 Centre Street. After receiving a recommendation from playwright Theresa Rebeck, René Balcer, the executive producer of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, decided to recruit Leight to join the team of the series in its second season as a writer and producer.

One of his coworkers made a reference to the play Side Man by Leight. In the episode “Shrink-Wrapped” from the third season, a couple who is always arguing with each other discusses the reasons why the married pair in the play is acting the way they do. The decision to appoint Leight as the program’s executive producer and head writer came about in 2006 when Balcer resigned from his position at the show after the fifth season.
