Manuel Arístides Ramírez Onelcida, a former professional baseball outfielder, was born on May 30, 1972. He is of Dominican and American descent from his birthplace. There were portions of 19 seasons that he spent playing in the Major League Baseball (MLB). Before spending one season in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan, he was a member of the Cleveland Indians, the Boston Red Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago White Sox, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
It is well known that Ramirez has a phenomenal amount of power and hitting ability. He was one of just 28 players in the history of baseball to hit 500 home runs in his career and was a nine-time Silver Slugger. His 21 grand slams are third all-time, and his 29 home runs in the playoffs are the most in the history of Major League Baseball. During his time with the Red Sox, he participated in a total of twelve All-Star Games, including eleven consecutive games starting in 1998. This stretch encompassed every season that he was a member of the Red Sox.
In the Dominican Republic, Ramirez was born in the city of Santo Domingo. He went to New York City with his parents, Onelcida and Aristides, when he was thirteen years old. These parents were his parents. After graduating from George Washington High School, he went on to become a renowned baseball player. During the Major League Baseball draft in 1991, the Cleveland Indians selected him thirteenth overall in the first round of the draft. On September 2, 1993, he made his debut in the Major League Baseball.
During the year 1994, Ramirez established himself as a regular player in the big leagues and received the second-most votes for the Rookie of the Year Award. By 1995, he had already earned the title of All-Star. As a member of the Indians, he participated in the postseason in the years 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999. Among his many accomplishments with the team, he was a part of the World Series in both 1995 and 1997. In 1999, Ramirez established a new record for the Indians in terms of single-season RBIs with 165.
By the end of the 2000 season, Ramirez had signed a contract with the Boston Red Sox. Ramirez and his partner David Ortiz established themselves as one of the most formidable offensive tandems in the history of baseball during Ramirez’s tenure in Boston. Before being sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008 as part of a three-team transaction that also included the Pittsburgh Pirates, Ramirez was the driving force behind the Red Sox’s two World Series victories in 2004 and 2007.
Taking human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a fertility medicine for women that is often used after steroids, resulted in Ramirez receiving a suspension of fifty games in 2009 for breaking the drug rules of the League of American Baseball. In the spring of 2011, Major League Baseball (MLB) alerted Ramirez of another violation of its drug policy, which resulted in a suspension of one hundred games. On April 8, he decided to quit rather than face suspension.
In September 2011, Ramirez expressed his desire to be reinstated, and in December of the same year, he reached an agreement with the league to lower his ban to fifty games. Even though Ramirez had played for the Oakland Athletics, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs systems at different stages in his career, as well as for other teams throughout the world, he did not play in another game in the Major Leagues.
Although Ramirez was generally considered to be one of the finest right-handed hitters of his generation, he concluded his career with a lifetime batting average. He was known for being a complete hitter who could hit for both power and average. a batting average of 312, 555 home runs placing him 15th all-time, and 1,831 runs batted in placing him 18th all-time. Ramirez had a batting average of.285 in 111 playoff games, during which he also hit 29 home runs and drove in 78 runs.
From 1987 to 1991, Ramirez was a student at George Washington High School. However, he discontinued his education at the age of 19 and did not graduate. During the period that he was active on the squad, the number of immigrants attending GWHS saw a significant growth. GWHS’s baseball team consisted exclusively of Dominicans, which made this statement quite clear. When Ramirez was younger, he was typically quite humble and it was his preference to avoid being the focus of attention.
While he was a student at GWHS, he was the captain of his team, which won three consecutive division titles. He hit 16 home runs and had a batting average of.633 in 1990 when he was a junior in high school. In baseball, he was selected for all-city honors three times, and in 1991, while he was a senior in high school, he was honored as the New York City Public School Player of the Year. He batted for a batting average of.650 and blasted 14 home runs in 22 games. The New York City Public School Athletic League Hall of Fame granted him induction into the hall of fame in the year 1999.
During the 1991 Major League Baseball draft, the Cleveland Indians paid Ramirez a signing bonus of $250,000 after selecting him with the thirteenth overall choice in the first round. He made his debut in the professional baseball league with the Burlington Indians, who were a rookie team. Not only did he lead the league in slugging and total bases, but he also hit 19 home runs and drove in 63 runs in 59 games, earning him the title of Most Valuable Player of the Appalachian League. Baseball America also chose him as the short-season Player of the Year.
