Born on November 1, 1960, Fernando Valenzuela Anguamea is a Mexican pitcher who once competed at the professional level in baseball before retiring. Between the years 1980 and 1991, as well as 1993 and 1997, Valenzuela participated in 17 seasons of Major League Baseball (MLB). Even though he played for six different Major League Baseball clubs, his longest career was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. When batting and throwing, Valenzuela used his left hand.

In the following year, he was sent to the Guanajuato Tuzos of the Mexican Central League, where he had a record of 5–6 wins and losses while maintaining an earned run average (ERA) of 2.23. When the Mexican Central League was included in the larger Mexican League the next year, Valenzuela, who was 18 years old at the time, was automatically promoted to the Triple-A level of the Mexican League.
During that season, Valenzuela pitched for the Leones de Yucatán and finished with a record of 10–12, a 2.49 earned run average, and 141 strikeouts. During this period, Valenzuela caught the attention of several Major League Baseball clubs. Mike Brito, a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, had traveled to Mexico to see a shortstop called Ali Uscanga undergoing his evaluation.
To fall behind in the count, Valenzuela threw three balls to Uscanga. After that, he threw three consecutive strikes to strike out the hitter. After some time had passed, Brito said that he had “forgotten all about the shortstop” at that point. In the end, the Dodgers decided to take a chance on the young left-handed pitcher by purchasing his Liga contract on July 6, 1979, for a total of $120,000.
The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Valenzuela to the Lodi Dodgers of the High-A level California League when they acquired him in the summer of 1979. In the small amount of time he played with the Lodi Dodgers, he had a record of 1–2 and a 1.13 earned run average (ERA). The Dodgers believed that Valenzuela needed to acquire the ability to throw a pitch that was slower than the average, so before to the 1980 season, they had Bobby Castillo, a pitcher for the Dodgers, instruct him on how to throw the screwball.
The San Antonio Dodgers, who played at the Double-A level, gave Valenzuela a promotion in the year 1980. During that time, Valenzuela finished the season with a record of 13–9 wins and losses with a 3.10 earned run average. He also led the Texas League with 162 strikeouts.
The Los Angeles Dodgers decided to bring Valenzuela up to the bullpen in September of 1980.
