Kevin Parker Bio

Kevin Richard Parker is an Australian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, musician, and record producer. He is best known for his musical project Tame Impala, for which he writes, sings, records, and produces music. Kevin Richard Parker was born on January 20, 1986, in Australia. Innerspeaker (2010), Lonerism (2012), Currents (2015), and The Slow Rush (2020) are the four albums under the Tame Impala moniker that have been released by Parker. He is the recipient of thirteen ARIA Music Awards, two APRA Awards, and a Brit Award. Additionally, he has been nominated for four Grammy Awards.

In addition to his work for Tame Impala, Parker served as the drummer for the band Pond from the years 2009 through 2011. Beard, Wives, Denim (2012), Hobo Rocket (2013), Man, It Feels Like Space Again (2015), The Weather (2017), and Tasmania (2019) were all albums recorded at a studio that he produced for the band. Parker has worked as a producer with a variety of artists, including Mark Ronson, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Kanye West, Gorillaz, Travis Scott, Melody’s Echo Chamber, and the Flaming Lips. Parker lived the majority of his life in Perth, in the state of Western Australia, despite the fact that he was born in Sydney.

Jerry, Parker’s father, was originally from Rhodesia, and Rosalind, Parker’s mother, is a native of South Africa. When Parker was three years old, his parents went through a divorce and then split. In contrast to his older paternal half-brother Stuart, who lived in Brisbane, Queensland, he moved to Cottesloe, Western Australia, when he was 12 years old and lived there with his father, stepmother Rhonda, and younger brother Stephen. Helen, who is his maternal half-sister and is younger than he is, is the product of his mother’s second marriage.

Parker has always had a strong interest in music, even from an early age. “Playing a lot of music as a hobby” was something that Parker’s father did, and he was “a big part of [Kevin’s] musical upbringing.” He got his start playing an instrument by seeing his father play the guitar as they performed together. He explained that he taught himself to play the guitar by playing rhythm guitar to his Shadows’ solos. Because he is a huge fan of Hank B. Marvin, he requested that I play lead riffs from the Shadows, and he instructed me to play chords in the background.

Parker’s father was a member of a cover band and played music by artists such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Supertramp. Parker feels that his father was the source of his “love of melody,” which has been an important component of Parker’s work. Parker also recollects “amusing [him]self by singing along to the vacuum cleaner when [his] mum was cleaning.” In subsequent years, Parker’s dad was the one who gave Kevin his first guitar.

Parker began playing the drums at the age of 11, following in the footsteps of his older brother. He went on to create “excessively melodic music from about the age of 12 to 15” that was “really weird and repetitive and almost genre-less” by recording his drumming and overdubbing guitar and other instruments in lo-fi experiments. Regarding this topic, Parker was quoted as saying, “I’ve always recorded music. When I was 12 years old, I would set up two tape machines and perform my own multi-tracking.

First, I’d record a beat on the drums; then, while playing the keyboard, I’d play that tape into another tape recorder; finally, I’d take that tape and play bass guitar along with the drums and the keyboard. I’d keep including more and more instruments. I did that for a long time until my dad bought me an 8-track, and after that, I continued recording songs by myself, even if I was a member of other bands at the same time. This pastime eventually became an addiction for Parker, who said that he was “just doing music all the time, I never did any homework, I’d just spend every night in the garage recording music.” At the age of 16, Parker purchased his first eight-track recorder.

At the age of thirteen, Parker met fellow Tame Impala member Dominic Simper in their music lesson at John XXIII College in Perth, with whom he discovered a musical connection and eventually became a member of Tame Impala. Along with Dan Debuf, who is currently a broadcaster on 2Day FM, Parker, and Simper got their start in the music industry by performing cover versions of songs like Rage Against the Machine, Unwritten Law, Sunk Loto, and Korn. During his late teenage years, Parker became exposed to a wide variety of psychedelic rock performers from the 1960s and 1970s. These musicians would go on to have a significant impact on his musical style.

Parker has stated that he “got into bands like Cream and Jefferson Airplane in a big way, and loved the sound of their recordings.” My exposure to bands like Brainticket and Demon Fuzz, which were being played by my peers, broadened my understanding of the various ways songs may be constructed. Because the Beatles’ style of singing vocal lines is so distinctive, it frequently made its way into the recordings. On the other hand, the aspects that we absorb from those other bands are typically elements that are prevalent among a few other bands that we listen to.

At the age of 18, Parker was “playing in the pub scene” and at the time was writing “heavy 70’s-style almost prog-rock songs, like Blue Cheer”. Parker, when he was a younger teenager, went through phases in which he felt lost and alone, and he described such phases as follows: “I didn’t have the most solid family life. As a result of the lack of a stable foundation there, I was forced to handle the majority of the responsibilities on my own. And I had no idea where I was. I can very vividly recall thinking to myself, “I have no one.”

When I was really young, perhaps about 15 or so, I was brushing my teeth when I suddenly burst into tears for no apparent reason. I just felt like I was by myself.” Parker also believes that the album Lonerism released by Tame Impala in 2012 “validates” a lot of the emotions he had as a teenager. He remarked, “It has this strange sense of optimism to it. Perhaps that’s part of the allure of the situation. Perhaps this is the reason why it has been so successful.”

After some time, Parker worked as a legal clerk and delivered court documents in the city of Perth. While he was working there, he used the time to compose tunes in his brain to pass the time. Later, he resigned from his position. When Parker was younger, his father frequently cautioned him against entering the music industry. According to Parker, “My father always cautioned me against pursuing a career in music.” He became highly concerned and stated that “if you do music as your job, as the thing that puts food on the table, then it will instantly ruin its magic, it will no longer be mysterious and fun any longer, it would just be like work.” The advice that Parker’s father had given him was taken seriously, and he attended college for a period to pursue a degree in engineering.

He explained, “In a way, I wanted to please my dad.” I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life because the only thing besides music that I enjoyed doing was listening to it. Parker is quoted as saying, “I detested it, and one day I made the decision to switch to astronomy.” I was aware that I would have limited financial resources, so I focused my energy on finding enjoyable activities. Parker was sitting in on a lecture about astronomy when he came across a slide that would later inspire the artwork he created for the Tame Impala EP.

On the other hand, Parker did not give up on his initial goal. He explained, “I was attending university when we got signed, and a couple of months prior to that, I had resigned myself to the fact that I wasn’t actually going to become a famous musician and that I should just get on with my career.” After that, I buckled down and began to make actual progress in my studies at the university. On the other hand, I have never been able to devote as much of my concentration and passion to anything but music. To put it another way, it was an illness. I would not be able to pay attention to a single word that was being spoken in the lectures because all I could think about was my newest song.

While Parker was on his way to take his final exam in astronomy, he received a call from Modular Recordings, who expressed interest in signing Tame Impala to their label. As soon as Parker heard this, he drove back home and started working on his music instead of continuing to the exam. After a year-long battle with cancer, Parker’s father passed away while his son was in the studio working on his debut album. Parker described the aftermath of Jerry’s passing as having a “massive” impact on him, describing how “it was a weird time, extremely confusing, and I didn’t really know what to make of it.”
