Kenny Dalglish Bio

His full name is Sir Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish MBE, and he was born on March 4, 1951. He is a former football player and manager in Scotland. Throughout his career, he played as a striker for both Celtic and Liverpool, totaling 338 appearances for Celtic and 515 for Liverpool. He also won a record 102 caps for the Scotland national team and scored 30 goals, which is also a joint record. In 1983, Dalglish was honored with the Ballon d’Or Silver Award. In 1979 and 1983, he was also named the FWA Footballer of the Year. In 1983, he was also honored with the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award. In 2009, FourFourTwo magazine recognized Dalglish as the best striker in post-war British football, and he has been inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame as well as the English Football Hall of Fame. He is held in very high esteem by Liverpool supporters, who fondly refer to him as “King Kenny” and voted him number one in a survey of “100 Players Who Shook the Kop” in 2006.

In 1971, Dalglish started his professional career at Celtic, where he would go on to win four Scottish League titles, four Scottish Cups, and one Scottish League Cup throughout the course of his time with the club. When Liverpool manager Bob Paisley brought Dalglish to the club in 1977, he set a new record for the amount of money spent on a British transfer by spending £440,000. His time at Liverpool was one of the most successful eras in the club’s history, as the team won six English league titles during his tenure there in addition to the FA Cup, four League Cups, five FA Charity Shields, three European Cups, and one European Super Cup. Between 1971 and 1986, Dalglish played for Scotland in 102 international matches and scored 30 goals for the national team. As a result, he became Scotland’s most-capped player and is tied for the team’s all-time goalscoring record with Denis Law.

After Joe Fagan stepped down as player-manager of Liverpool in 1985, Dalglish was promoted to that role and went on to lead the club to more success, including three more First Division titles, two FA Cups, and four FA Charity Shields until stepping down in 1991. Eight months later, Dalglish made his comeback to football manager with Blackburn Rovers, the team he guided to the Premier League title in 1995 after leading them from the Second Division to win it. Soon after that, he resigned from his position as manager to take on the role of Director of Football at the club, a role he would hold until his final departure in 1996.

The month of January 1997 marked the beginning of Dalglish’s tenure as manager of Newcastle United. His first season at Newcastle resulted in the club finishing as runners-up in the Premier League, but the next season they ended in 13th place, which ultimately led to his dismissal the following year. After that, in 1999, Dalglish was given the position of Director of Football at Celtic, and he subsequently served as manager for a short time.

Before his contentious departure the next year, he triumphed in the Scottish League Cup in the year 2000. In May of 1967, Dalglish committed his professional future to Celtic by signing a contract with the club. The assistant manager of the club, Sean Fallon, paid a visit to Dalglish and his parents at their residence, which included photos of the Rangers displayed around the space. During his first year playing professionally, Dalglish spent time on loan with Cumbernauld United, where he led the team in scoring with 37 goals. In addition to this, he worked throughout this time period as an apprentice joiner.

Celtic manager Jock Stein wanted Dalglish to play for Cumbernauld for a second season, but the teenager had his sights set on making the jump to the professional ranks. Dalglish’s ambition came true, and he became a regular member of the reserve squad known as the Quality Street Gang. This site received its nickname from the fact that it had a significant number of highly ranked players, including players who would go on to represent Scotland in international competition, such as Danny McGrain, George Connelly, Lou Macari, and David Hay. On September 25, 1968, Dalglish made his first-team competitive debut for Celtic in a match against Hamilton Academical in the quarterfinals of the Scottish League Cup. He entered the game in the second half as a replacement, and Celtic went on to win 4–2.

Although he played for the reserves throughout the 1968–1969 season, he only managed to score four goals in a total of seventeen contests. The next year, he decided to switch positions and play more in the middle of the field. As a result, he had a successful year, contributing to the success of the reserve team and helping them win both the league and the cup. He finished with 19 goals scored in 31 games. On October 4, 1969, Stein selected Dalglish to start for the first team in a league match against Raith Rovers. This match took place in Scotland. However, Dalglish did not score, and he did not score in any of the other first-team games that he participated in during the 1969–1970 season either. The celtic won the game 7–1.

Dalglish maintained his success as a goalscorer in the reserves into the next season, finishing with 23 goals scored. One of the most memorable moments of his season came against Rangers in the Reserve Cup Final. Dalglish scored one goal in a 4–1 victory in the first leg, and then in the second leg scored a hat trick in a 6–1 win to capture the cup for his team. Dalglish, who was not yet a first-team regular at the time, was in the stands during the Ibrox catastrophe in January 1971, which happened during an Old Firm match and resulted in the deaths of 66 Rangers supporters. On May 17, 1971, he played for Celtic against Kilmarnock in a testimonial match for the long-serving midfielder Frank Beattie of the Rugby Park club. During the match, he scored six goals, leading Celtic to a 7–2 victory against Kilmarnock.

Dalglish was able to firmly establish himself as a member of the Celtic first team during the 1971–1972 campaign. On August 14, 1971, he scored his first goal in a competitive match for the first team. It was a penalty kick, and it was Celtic’s second goal in a 2–0 victory against Rangers at Ibrox Stadium. He went on to score 29 goals in 53 appearances during that season, including a hat trick against Dundee and braces against Kilmarnock and Motherwell, and he helped Celtic win their eighth straight league championship. He also assisted in the team’s capture of the Scottish Cup.

Dalglish was a member of the Celtic team that won the 1972 Scottish Cup after defeating Hibernian by a score of 6-1. During the 1972–1973 season, Dalglish led Celtic in scoring with 39 goals across all competitions, and the team won the league title for a second consecutive year. In the 1973–1974 season, Celtic achieved the league and cup double and advanced to the semifinals of the European Cup. The matches against Atlético Madrid were contentious, and Dalglish referred to the first leg in Glasgow, which took place when the Spanish team had three players sent off, as “without doubt the worst game I have ever played in as far as violence is concerned.” Dalglish was awarded another Scottish Cup winner’s medal in 1975. He was the one who provided the cross that led to Paul Wilson’s first goal in the 3–1 victory against Airdrieonians. This game turned out to be captain Billy McNeill’s last game before he retired from professional football.
