Jwan Yosef is a Swedish artist and painter born in Syria and now uses London as his professional base. His plastic work has garnered him a lot of attention. His artistic practice incorporates a novel approach and a novel composition style that is distinctive and one-of-a-kind, and it is entirely different from conventional, standard, and well-established methods. Despite being born in Syria and raised in Sweden, he had creative tendencies from when he was a toddler.
Yosef received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the prestigious Konstfack University in Stockholm. Subsequently, he acquired his Master of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London. Beginning with his time at Konstfack, he participated in several group exhibits held in various locations, such as Vienna, Prague, London, Dallas, and Los Angeles. In the year 2013, he hosted two solo presentations titled “Painting about Sex, Flesh, and Violence” and “High Notes.” In 2016, he presented another solo exhibition titled “Masked.”
Within the organization “The Bomb Factory Art Foundation,” Yosef is a founder member and studio holder. Through the use of certain pieces of his artwork, he creates a space that exists between paintings and sculptural objects. Yosef is a musician who is openly homosexual and is married to Ricky Martin, who is a Puerto Rican singer. On September 6, 1984, Yosef was born in Ras al-Ayn, located in the northern region of Syria.
Given that his father, Ahmad Yosef, is of Syrian Kurdish heritage and his mother is of Armenian Christian descent, he is of Kurdish and Armenian descent. The religious views of his parents were distinct from one another. When Yosef was two years old,, his family moved from Syria to Sweden—the word “Jwan” means “beautiful” and “young” in the Syrian language.
Yosef claims that he has been painting since he was a little kid. Between 2004 and 2006, he attended the ‘Pernby School of Painting’ in Stockholm to acquire painting skills. Through his studies at the ‘Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design,’ he completed his degree in 2009. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Fine Arts from Central Saint Martins, London, in 2011.
Immediately after he graduated from ‘Central Saint Martins,’ Yosef began searching for a studio to launch his career. He exerted a lot of effort, and his efforts garnered notice. The fact that he took part in several foreign exhibitions was essential in his ability to get other assignments. During his early years, he participated in several group exhibits, particularly those held at the Konstfack in Stockholm.
Over his later years, he participated in several group exhibitions, including “Life Is Elsewhere” in London (2011), “Some Catch” in London (2012), “Journey to the Center of My Mind” in Madrid (2013), “Faceless” in Brussels (2015), “Re: Define” in Dallas (2015), “Tillstand” in Karlstad (2016), “Lounge” in Stockholm (2016, 2017), and “Over the Rainbow” in Los Angeles (2017).
The artist asserts that he was inspired by the works of Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, and Jaan Toomik. Yet, he maintains that he draws inspiration from ordinary objects, events, and relationships. Oil on Perspex is his primary media for his artistic endeavors; nevertheless, he collaborates with Canvas.
The ‘Divus Gallery’ in London was the location of his first solo show, titled ‘Painting about Sex, Flesh, and Violence, haha’ and took place in 2013. His second solo show, “High Notes,” was exhibited at the “Galleri Anna Thulin” in Stockholm when his first solo exhibition was staged. “Masked” was the title of his third solo show, which opened on November 10, 2016, at the “Stene Projects” establishment in Stockholm.
There and Back Again was a collective show that Yosef participated in in 2015, along with other artists such as Nastasja Loutchko, Petr Davydtchenka, and Josef Bull. “There and Back Again” Yosef is a founder member of the art foundation known as “The Bomb Factory Art Foundation,” which was created in Archway, North London, at the beginning of 2015. Yosef is also the studio holder at this art foundation.
In the autumn of 2018, Yosef is doing a series of four solo shows that are set to take place. During these programs, he has concentrated on three distinct individuals: the actor Rock Hudson, the dictator of Syria, Hafez al-Assad, and his father, Ahmad Yosef. He has chosen the relevant titles from movies starring Rock Hudson to create a cohesive thread across all programs.
Both the “Columbia Threadneedle Prize” and the “BEERS Contemporary Award” for “Emerging Art” were bestowed upon him in 2013 when he was recognized for his artistic accomplishments. On Instagram, a social networking site, Yosef has many followers. Food and reading are two activities that he enjoys doing very much. We know that Yosef is homosexual. The Puerto Rican singer, actor, and novelist Ricky Martin has been his significant other since 2016 they first started dating.
They publicly appeared on the red carpet in 2016, confirming their relationship. Aside from that, the two individuals were present at the “amFAR (The Foundation of AIDS Research) Inspirational Gala” that took place in São Paolo, Brazil. It was on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” when Yosef announced he would. It was in 2017 that the couple tied the knot, and they now reside together with Martin’s twins, Valentino and Matteo, who were achieved via surrogacy.
