Julia Stone was born on 13 April 1984. Australian singer-songwriter Julia Stone has won praise for her ethereal, evocative voice and her unique blend of acoustic balladry and indie pop. She originally gained widespread recognition alongside her sibling as part of the lauded Australian folk duo Angus & Julia Stone, with whom she released four albums that reached the Top Five on the ARIA chart and won the ARIA Album of the Year award for the 2010s Down the Way. Stone has established herself as a solo artist in addition to her ongoing partnership with her brother, with albums such as 2012’s By the Horns and 2021’s Sixty Summers.
Stone was born in Newport, Australia, and she spent her formative years there, where her father taught music and her parents performed as a folk pair. Stone’s parents always pushed her to pursue music, so she picked up the trumpet at a young age and frequently performed with her family band, which also included her brother Angus on trombone and sister Catherine on saxophone. Later on, she began to express herself musically through singing and guitar.
By the time Stone had finished high school, she and her brother were creating and performing their own music together. As Angus & Julia Stone, they have put out two albums, A Book Like This and Down the Way (2010), both of which have received high praise from music critics. They won five ARIA Music Awards, including Album of the Year, for the latter, which had a number-one debut in Australia.
At roughly the same time, Stone released her first solo album, The Memory Machine, in 2010. The album was produced by her along with Kieran Kelly and Brad Albetta, and it features her developing the ethereal, gloomy sound she created with her sibling. By the Horns, her second full-length album was produced by Thomas Bartlett and Patrick Dillett and reached number 11 in Australia two years later.
In 2014, Stone recorded Angus & Julia Stone with her brother under the direction of Rick Rubin. It was their second consecutive No. 1 album in Australia and their first time on the Billboard Americana/Folk Albums chart.
Stone compiled the cover album Songs for Australia in 2020, with sales going to bushfire assistance in Australia in 2019 and 2020. She covered Midnight Oil’s “Beds Are Burning” for the album. Her third solo album, Sixty Summers, was released the following year and featured contributions from St. Vincent and Thomas Bartlett, alias Doveman, on production and songwriting. The track “We All Have,” which features Matt Berninger of the National, was included on the album.
Stone’s second solo album, By the Horns, was released simultaneously on 25 May 2012 around the world and peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Albums Chart. Stone recalled coming up with the music and briefly splitting up with Angus, “We had been working on a new album together, but something just wasn’t clicking.
At a sunrise concert at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in June 2011, she provided backing vocals on “Do You Realize” by The Flaming Lips and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Stone went on tour with her partner Doveman that year, opening for him in New York and California in August.
The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) certified Angus & Julia Stone’s second album, Down the Way (March 2010), triple platinum in 2011. In 2010, it was Australia’s best-selling album by a solo artist. Down the Way won Album of the Year at the 2010 ARIA Music Awards, and “Big Jet Plane” won Single of the Year. Listeners of Triple J ranked “Big Jet Plane” at the top of the station’s 2011 Hottest 100 with their votes.
Stone started out wanting to be a solo artist, but she and her partner eventually found success as a pair. Stone’s first solo album, The Memory Machine, debuted in the top 100 on the ARIA Albums Chart in September 2010 following five years of recording and touring with the pair. Fans and critics alike praised it. Poppy Reid from MTV’s Music Network discovered “Julia employs Caroline Pedler’s creative paintings of classic horror film posters from the United Kingdom. The posters illustrate concepts from each song, with Julia as the main character in everyone “.
Sky, a television network in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has used Julia’s rendition of “You’re the One That I Want,” a song originally released in 2010, in their channel ID commercial. After playing in the commercial, the song climbed to number one on the UK iTunes charts. She participated in a multi-platform media initiative called Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Globally, based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, in September 2012. The project featured her in a campaign called 30 Songs / 30 Days.
Stone was inspired by her brother’s musical ability on a trip to South America after she graduated from high school: “[Angus] was creating amazing songs had shown me how to play guitar in Bolivia, and those songs had carried me through that year.” After that, Stone began creating her own music. The first time Stone and Angus played together was during an open mic night in 2005 when they sang “Tears” at the Coogee Bay Hotel with Angus on backing vocals. In 2006, following a series of performances in which each provided vocal support throughout the other’s set, they formed the duo Angus & Julia Stone. Chocolates and Cigarettes, the duo’s first extended play, was recorded in March of that year and released in August. They have now released four more studio albums and five extended plays.
