John Frederick Dryer is a well-known American actor, radio broadcaster, screenwriter, and former professional football player. He was born on July 6, 1946, in the United States. Beginning in 1969 and continuing until his retirement in 1981, he spent 13 years in the National Football League at the defensive end position. During that time, he took part in 176 games. He finished his career with 103 sacks, most of which were achieved with the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams. He is the only player in NFL history to have ever recorded two safeties in a single game.
After he retired from football, Dryer went on to have a successful career as an actor in cinema and television. He is most known for his role as the lead in the series Hunter. His height of 6 feet 6 inches and physique were handy for parts requiring physical prowess. Before moving to San Diego State University, Dryer received his associate’s degree at El Camino Junior College. Dryer was recognized as the El Camino Community College Athlete of the Year in 1966 and was inducted into the El Camino Community College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 as a founding member for his outstanding achievement on the football field. Dryer was recognized as a Junior College All-American in the year 1966.
While Dryer was a student at San Diego State, the Aztecs had a combined record of 19–1–1 throughout his junior and senior seasons, both of which saw him earn a letter of recognition. Both in the fall and the spring, they won the College Division National Championship. In 1967, the Aztecs were ranked number one in the surveys conducted by both the Associated Press and United Press International. In 1968, San Diego State University and North Dakota State University were both ranked number one in their respective polls and as a result, the College Division championship was split between the two universities. Dryer was selected by his teammates as the defensive lineman who most exemplified the team’s values, and as a result, he was awarded the Byron H. Chase Memorial Trophy.

On defense, the Aztecs surrendered 12.9 points per game in 1967, which places them seventh overall in the history of the program. After more than half a century has passed, the Aztec run defense’s performances in 1967 and 1968 still rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the annals of the school’s history in terms of yards allowed per game on the ground.

Dryer was selected by the New York Giants in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft. Despite being a rookie, he was given a starting position on the team. From 1969 to 1971, he started every game as the right defensive end for the team. Despite the fact that the NFL did not begin to formally acknowledge quarterback sacks until 1982, clubs continued to compile their own sack stats prior to that year. As a result of this, he was the leader of the club in sacks for each of those three seasons, with 812 in 1969, 12 in 1970, and 812 in 1971. In addition to that, he was at the top of the defensive leaders in other areas. In 1969, he had 58 tackles, 39 of which were solo efforts, six pass breakups, and two forced fumbles, all of which he recovered.
The next year, Dryer was selected as an alternate for the Pro Bowl; however, he was unable to participate due to a hip injury. After earning 59 tackles, 43 of which were solo, four pass deflections, three forced fumbles, and two recovered fumbles in addition to his 12 sacks, he was named to the NFC’s Second team All-Conference. In 1971, he once again was first on the team in sacks with 812, and he finished with a total of 52 tackles. For the third season in a row, he recovered two fumbles, caused two more passes to be intercepted, and deflected two more passes.
Dryer was sent to the New England Patriots in February of 1972 in exchange for three draft picks after having multiple confrontations with the management of the Giants in the year 1971. The Giants selected defensive back Eldridge Small with their first-round selection after trading up to do so. Due to the fact that Dryer did not sign a contract for the 1971 season, he was able to become a free agent in the month of May the following year.
He refused to report to the Patriots until they offered him a long-term deal that would make him the defensive lineman with the biggest annual salary in all of professional football. Instead of giving in to his demands, the Patriots decided to trade him to the Los Angeles Rams for a first-round draft selection in 1973 and a reserve defensive end named Rick Cash four days before he was eligible to become a free agent.
Because of this trade, Dryer was able to make the move to a club on the West Coast that he had always desired, and the Rams were able to secure his commitment to a multiyear deal. During his debut season with the Rams, he served as left defensive end Jack Youngblood’s backup. He made just four starts, but he participated in each and every game despite suffering from a broken hand and a broken nose. In 1972, his main responsibility was to pressure the quarterback and enter the game on passing downs whenever possible. He finished with 40 tackles, 17 of which were solo, and 412 sacks.
Dryer played all 14 games that year on the right side of the field, and he was the first player in NFL history to ever record two safeties in a single game. He did this by making two tackles of opposition passes in the end zone during the fourth quarter. At the conclusion of the season, he finished with ten quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles, and three recovered fumbles. Following the conclusion of the year, Pro Football Weekly selected him for the All-NFC Second Team. At the end of the season, he had 39 tackles, 21 of which were single stops, three forced fumbles, and three fumbles recovered.
In 1974, he finished with 15 sacks, which tied for the league lead, and the Rams named him their Outstanding Defensive Lineman. He was selected to the All-NFC First Team by the NEA as well as the All-Pro Second Team by the AP. In terms of statistics, he had another successful year when it came to stopping the run, finishing with a total of 49 tackles and two forced turnovers.
