Her work in these roles has brought her the majority of her fame.

Violet E. (nee Brightwell) and Hector H. Lyman, both of whom worked in the financial industry, were Lyman’s parents. Lyman was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She identifies as a Protestant. Jill Larson, who took over for her as Opal on All My Children and attended the same high school as she did, is her replacement on the show. In 1971, she made her first appearance on the soap opera A World Apart, playing the role of flower kid Julie Stark. After a few years had passed, Dorothy made an appearance on The Edge of Night playing the role of Elly Jo Jamison, an evil relative of affluent Orin Hillyer.

She is most known for her roles as architect Gwen Parrish Frame (1976–1980, 1989) on Another World and Ralphie’s mother in Jean Shepherd’s Ollie Hopnoodle’s Haven of Bliss (1988). Both of these roles were performed during the same time period. She made an appearance in the episode “In the Cards” (1985) of the television series Tales from the Darkside, in the role of Maura Norris in the episode “Tequila” (1988) of ALF, in the role of Rebecca Whitmore (1990–1991) on Generations, and in the role of Bonnie Roberts (1991–1992) on The Bold and the Beautiful for those three years.

Her most famous role, however, was as Opal Sue Gardner on All My Children, for which she won two Emmy Awards: the first was for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series in 1982, and the second was for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in 1983. In 1983, she was cast in one of the parts that would go on to become one of her most well-known, and she played the part of Naomi Oates Harper on the sitcom Mama’s Family for the full six seasons.

Throughout an appearance on Vicki Lawrence’s talk show Vicki!, Lyman mentioned that she continued to perform on All My Children concurrently with the commencement of the production of Mama’s Family and that she did so by traveling between New York City and Los Angeles on a weekly basis. Lyman made this statement throughout the course of the interview. Despite the fact that the drive was extremely difficult, she looked back on it with fondness and referred to that time of her career as “All My Paychecks.”

After the final season of Mama’s Family aired in 1990, Lyman moved on to work behind the camera, producing and directing 75 episodes of The Nanny (including every episode of the third and fourth seasons and all but four episodes of the fifth season). He also made a one-time appearance as a special guest on the Fran Drescher sitcom. Lyman also appeared in an ongoing capacity on Bob, which was Bob Newhart’s third television series.

The couple has two children together, one of which, their daughter Emma Tillinger Koskoff, is a producer who has been nominated for an Academy Award. Sebastian Tillinger, her son, is in the acting business. Lyman’s son is the product of her second marriage, which was to the French film producer Vincent Malle.

She is noted for her roles in Blow (2001), All My Children (1970), and Mama’s Family (1983), among others, as an actress and director. She has been married twice before, the first time to Vincent Malle and the second time to John Dillinger. The actress rose to fame thanks to her starring parts in daytime soap operas such as “All My Children” and “Another World.”She had her first appearance on the soap opera A World Apart in 1971, shortly after she was born in Minneapolis. Between the years 1987 and 2001, she was married to Vincent Malle.
