Daniel Johns Bio

Daniel Johns was born on 22 April 1979. Daniel Johns is an Australian singer-songwriter, producer, composer, and guitarist who first gained widespread attention as the teenage frontman of the alt-rock/post-grunge band Silverchair in the early ’90s. He has since released electronic-pop side projects as part of the Dissociatives and Dreams and pursued an R&B/soul-influenced solo career. Silverchair, over the period of 15 years, rose to prominence as one of Australia’s most popular acts. They went on an indefinite sabbatical in 2011, after releasing five albums that were all number one on the Australian charts.

The band’s music evolved under Johns’ direction, from grungy, Nirvana-inspired grunge to orchestral, Van Dyke Parks-inspired pop/rock. Johns’ electro-pop side projects, such as the Dissociatives, and Dreams, also used these genre-hopping soundscapes. Johns released his debut solo album, Conversation, in 2015, and his sophomore album, FutureNever, which blended the styles of his many eras, came out at the beginning of the following decade.

Johns, who was born in New South Wales’s Newcastle in 1979, formed Silverchair with pals Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. The youthful band’s early albums, Frogstomp and Freak Show, inspired by Nirvana, dominated the Australian charts and established them as a viable international export. In 1999, Silverchair released Neon Ballroom, which marked a change in the band’s music by including dramatic accents and a more mature attitude.

In 2002, with the release of Diorama, the group’s fourth consecutive number one, the shift was solidified. In epic tunes like “Across the Night” and “The Greatest View,” the album debuted a new symphonic style, which was co-produced by Johns and featured arrangements by Van Dyke Parks. Two of Johns’ post-2000 endeavors, the Dissociatives, and Dreams, began as a result of his flourishing connections with two fellow Australians during this time.

DJ Paul Mac, who has worked with Silverchair since the Freak Show days, contributed piano to the album Diorama. After the release of Diorama, Johns, and Mac got back together to continue recording as the Dissociatives. In 2000, the duo released an EP titled I Can’t Believe It’s Not Rock, but it wasn’t until 2004’s The Dissociatives that they returned to their experimental pop, rock, and electronic mashup (Eleven). Released in the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom in 2005, the album featured the singles “Somewhere Down the Barrel” and “Forever and a Day,” and it came close to breaking into the Australian album chart’s top ten.

Johns shifted gears and went back to Silverchair to make Young Modern, the band’s fifth studio album, released in 2007. Young Modern was written solely by Johns and featured guests including Luke Steele, Julian Hamilton, and Paul Mac, bringing together the polished pop sound of the Dissociatives and the opulent symphonic approach of Diorama. With a number one debut and ARIA wins for both Single and Album of the Year, this would be Silverchair’s final studio release.

After meeting Luke Steele in 2003 when Steele’s band, the Sleepy Jackson, opened for Silverchair on their Diorama tour, Johns got to work on another project with him in the years that followed. Starting in 2008, they’ve worked together on musical compositions influenced by the Beatles’ White Album. But, as Steele moved on to Empire of the Sun and Johns went back to Silverchair for the Young Modern cycle, the demos were lost and the project was put on hold. They wouldn’t see each other again as Dreams until 2018.

Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Johns worked with a variety of other musicians, including Zhu, Slumberjack, and What So Not on the electronic side, the Veronicas on the pop side, and 360 on the rap side. He also started making his debut solo album, which is an unexpected blend of seductive R&B and electro-soul. In early 2015, the extended play (EP) Aerial Love was released, featuring four new songs. The album Talk reached number two on the ARIA charts, thanks to the success of the singles “Aerial Love” and “Cool on Fire.”

After the success of Talk’s marketing campaign, Johns and Steele got back together to start working on Dreams. Following a cryptic marketing effort, Dreams finally revealed themselves to the world in 2018 with the strutting future-disco single “No One Defeats Us,” which was more in the vein of Empire of the Sun and Talk than Sleepy Jackson or Silverchair. The next weekend after their debut performance at Coachella 2018, they released their second single, “Silent.”

In 2021, the reclusive musician began teasing fans with references to his upcoming second solo album. In early 2022, that set finally became a reality. Peking Duk, What So Not, and a reunion of Diorama including Van Dyke Parks were among the guests on FutureNever, which combined sounds from throughout Johns’ musical range, both as an artistic partner and as a solo artist. Johns also gave “Those Thieving Birds, Pt. 3” to the Silverchair fanbase as the final installment of the Young Modern song trilogy. Johns found solace in music, writing songs like “Cemetery,” “Miss You Love,” “Ana’s Song,” and “Abuse Me” that reflected his inner turmoil. The latest album from Johns, Diorama, has put him back on top, so it looks like the worst is over.

Diorama is the record critics describe as “Silverchair’s best work yet,” yet he has been unable to tour in support of it owing to arthritis. However, thanks to a spectacular performance at the 2002 Aria’s, the album has sold close to 500,000 copies. His partner, the musician Natalie Imbruglia, has been his rock through it all. Johns thinks he has moved past his troubled adolescence, and with an album as strong as “Diorama,” it’s hard to argue with him. Johns is the voice of Australian youth and an inspiration to millions, having sold 6 million CDs around the world.
