Missy Higgins was born on 19 August 1983. Missy Higgins, a singer-songwriter with a penchant for heartfelt ballads and introspective adult pop, shot to fame after the success of her first three albums in her native Australia. Both the United States and New Zealand had charted records by her. Higgins has worked with producers such as John Porter, Mitchell Froom, and Jherek Bischoff, and she has maintained a string of Top Five albums after her initial triumph, most recently in 2014 with the cover album Oz.
Higgins began writing songs while a student at a boarding school in Melbourne, where she was able to pursue both her academic and musical interests. Without Missy’s knowledge or permission, her sister transmitted a copy of Missy’s early song “All for Believing” to the Australian radio station Triple J. The song ultimately won Triple J Unearthed, a competition for unsigned artists, and served as the catalyst for Higgins’ career as a singer/songwriter. Higgins released a self-titled EP in November 2003 after signing with Eleven, the same Australian record label utilized by homegrown heroes Silverchair.
In 2004, her EP Scar topped the Australian singles chart, paving the way for her debut album, The Sound of White. It was released the following September, with production by John Porter. The album was so popular that it spent two years on the charts in Australia and earned nine platinum certifications during that period. Higgins then set her eyes on the American market, releasing her debut All for Believing EP in January 2005 exclusively in the United States. The Warner Bros. release featured the album’s title track in addition to four other songs that were hand-picked from the album The Sound of White.
On a Clear Night, Higgins’ second studio album, was released internationally in 2007 and in the United States in early 2008. Mitchell Froom produced On a Clear Night, and while Higgins’ piano skills were highlighted on The Sound of White, the guitar was front and center for most of the songs he wrote. The album’s main track, “Steer,” reached #1 in Australia, becoming her second consecutive smash there. In the United States, the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Higgins took a break from music once the album’s tour and promotion ended. She began her studies at the University of Melbourne in 2010 and appeared in the Australian film Bran Nue Dae the same year. She never really left music behind, though, and in the summer of 2010, she flew to Nashville to make her second album with the assistance of fellow singer/songwriter Butterfly Boucher, whom she’d met while performing at Lilith Fair performances. Released in June of 2012, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle went straight to the top of the Australian album charts after its release.
In New Zealand, it peaked at number 22, and in the United States, it peaked at number 83. Higgins’s following release, titled Oz, featured cover versions of songs by Australian artists such as Paul Kelly and the Drones. That was so successful that a book and tour were given the same title. It came out in September of 2014, with production by Jherek Bischoff, and peaked at number three in her own nation. She reappeared in early 2016 with the single “Oh Canada,” a response to the drowning death of three-year-old Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi.
She is the younger sibling of Nicola and has a brother named Dave. In January 2015, she and her fiance Dan Lee became parents to a son. In 2013, she and Keith Urban sang a duet onstage together in Melbourne.
Sony and Eleven Records both expressed interest in signing Higgins. She decided to sign with Eleven in part because the label promised she wouldn’t be “turned into a pop star,” and also because the label was fine with her taking a break to go backpacking. John Watson of Eleven manages both Higgins and the rock band Silverchair. When asked about Missy, Watson said, “That was the one occasion in my career that I knew after 90 seconds that I truly wanted to sign her.” Higgins’s song “All for Believing” began getting exposure on Los Angeles radio station KCRW when he was traveling through Europe with a friend. The trip had been planned for years. Such airplay caught the interest of American record labels, and before the end of the year, they had signed a worldwide recording contract with Warner Bros.
Higgins spent September and October traveling, then moved back to Los Angeles to focus on the untapped American market. She was the featured performer at The Domain, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, on October 26 for the annual Legs 11 event, a benefit for breast cancer. Higgins appeared at the 2007 ARIAs two days later, where she won ‘Best Female Artist’ and was nominated for ‘Best Pop Release’, ‘Highest Selling Album,’ and ‘Highest Selling Single,’ all for “Steer.’
This was her seventh ARIA Music Award. On October 31st, she attended MAX’s first-ever Concert for the Cure, a private concert benefiting those who have been afflicted by breast cancer. Powderfinger was the headlining act, and she sang “Sunsets” and “These Days” alongside lead singer Bernard Fanning. From November through December, she performed in Cairns, Sydney, and Perth as part of her For One Night Only Tour. Tim Rogers, lead vocalist of You Am I, opened for her at a few performances.
