Chris Wallace Bio

Christopher Wallace is a well-known American broadcast journalist who was born on October 12th, 1947. Because of his reputation for conducting challenging and all-encompassing interviews, he is frequently likened to his father, Mike Wallace, a journalist who worked for 60 Minutes. In the course of his half-century-long career in journalism, he has held positions as a correspondent, moderator, or anchor on CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox News, and now CNN.

He was named as one of the most trustworthy TV news anchors in the United States in the year 2018. Wallace is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including three Emmys, a Peabody Award, a George Polk Award, the DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award, and the Paul White lifetime achievement award.

During the Republican National Convention in 1964, Wallace, who was still a teenager at the time, worked as an assistant for Walter Cronkite. After receiving his degree from Harvard University, he pursued a career as a national correspondent for The Boston Globe, where he was referred to as an “aggressive and ambitious reporter.” In this role, he was responsible for covering a wide range of topics.

After observing the influence television had on the dissemination of news at the 1972 Republican National Convention, he decided to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. He began his career with NBC, where he worked as a White House correspondent from 1975 until 1988. His colleagues at CBS and ABC at the time were Lesley Stahl and Sam Donaldson. Wallace was also the host of the news program Meet the Press and worked as an anchor for the NBC Nightly News.

After that, he began working for ABC, where he eventually became the host of the news programs Primetime Thursday and Nightline from 1989 to 2003. During his tenure at NBC, Wallace was the only individual to ever serve as both the host and moderator of multiple of the main political Sunday morning talk shows in the United States. These shows were broadcast on NBC. The interviews that Wallace conducted with prominent politicians, such as Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin, earned him praise during his tenure as presenter of Fox News Sunday, which lasted from 2003 to 2021.

He made history when he was picked to moderate the last presidential debate in the United States in 2016, which was between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, who had previously served as Secretary of State. He was the first Fox News journalist to hold this position. His tough questioning of both presidential candidates earned him praise from people on both sides of the political aisle. The New York Times said that “Mr. Wallace mixed humor with scolding and persistence with patience to guide his charges toward the most substantive encounter of an unusually vicious election.”

He was selected once again to moderate the first debate for the 2020 presidential election in the United States, which will take place between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Following this discussion, he described it as being disorderly and out of control. Chris Wallace started hosting a new interview series in 2022 under the title Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, which is shown on CNN and HBO Max. Wallace was born in Chicago, Illinois, to his parents, Mike Wallace, a prominent reporter for CBS 60 Minutes, and Norma Kaphan.

Wallace is Jewish, and both of Wallace’s parents were Jewish when they were alive. Since he was born on Columbus Day, his parents decided to give him the name Christopher. He has an older brother named Peter who lived from 1942 till 1962. Peter passed away at the age of 19 due to an accident that occurred while he was mountain climbing. When he was one year old, his parents got a divorce, and he spent his childhood with his mother and stepfather, Bill Leonard, who is the President of CBS News.

Leonard was the one who introduced him to the world of political journalism at an early age by employing him as an aide to Walter Cronkite during the Republican National Convention in 1964. It was not until Wallace was 14 years old that he began to create a relationship with his father, Mike. Wallace received his education at both the Hotchkiss School and Harvard University. His first job in broadcast journalism was at WHRB, the student radio station at Harvard University. He famously covered the student occupation of University Hall in 1969 and was held by Cambridge police officers.

He used his one phone call to sign off a report from Cambridge City Jail with the phrase “This is Chris Wallace from WHRB News reporting from Middlesex County Jail in custody.” In spite of the fact that he had been accepted to Yale Law School, he chose instead to work for The Boston Globe, where he was hailed as an “aggressive and ambitious reporter” by his supervisor. After beginning his career as a reporter at City Hall in Boston while Kevin White was serving as mayor, he went on to become a traveling national correspondent.

Soon after, Wallace shifted his concentration to the field of broadcast television journalism and began working as an assistant to Walter Cronkite at the 1964 Republican National Convention. Wallace first realized the influence of television when he attended a political convention in 1972 and observed that all of the reporters were instead watching the events on television rather than in person. He had a job at the Chicago station WBBM-TV, which was owned and run by CBS during the time he was employed there in the early 1970s.

Late in 1988, Wallace made the move from NBC to ABC. Sam Donaldson, who is leaving his position as chief White House reporter for ABC, expressed his “delight” and “very pleased” with the news that his journalistic competitor, Nicolle Wallace, would be joining the network. Donaldson stated, “I’ve always liked his work, I think he’s going to be a plus.” Wallace has been a competitor of Donaldson’s for many years. While working for ABC News, Wallace held the position of senior correspondent for Primetime Live and also hosted Nightline on occasion.

In 1991, he filed a report from Tel Aviv regarding the Iraqi Scud missile attacks that took place during the Persian Gulf War. At the time, the Israeli government desired to keep the location of where the Scuds landed a secret in order to prevent the Iraqis from modifying their launchers in response to the information. During one segment of Nightline, Wallace began explaining the neighborhood in Tel Aviv where a Scud missile was intercepted and destroyed. The host, Ted Koppel, interrupted him and requested that he not offer a specific location but rather indicate a general vicinity instead.
