Anthony Rizzo Bio

Anthony Vincent Rizzo is an American professional baseball first baseman who currently plays for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Rizzo was born in the United States on August 8, 1989. His past teams in Major League Baseball were the San Diego Padres and the Chicago Cubs. He has been in the All-Star game three times. Because of the work he does for charitable organizations, he is often considered for the Heart and Hustle Award.

Following his selection by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, Rizzo quickly established himself as one of the organization’s most promising prospects in the minor leagues. Following the conclusion of the 2010 campaign, the All-Star first baseman Adrián González was included in the deal that sent him and three other promising players to the San Diego Padres. In 2011, he debuted in Major League Baseball with San Diego.

After being traded to the Cubs in 2012, he went on to become an All-Star player and participated in the All-Star Game a total of three times in a row, beginning in 2014 and continuing through 2016. Other awards and recognitions that Anthony Rizzo has received include the Silver Slugger Award, the Gold Glove Award, the Roberto Clemente Award, and the World Series championship that the Chicago Cubs won in 2016. After being dealt to the Yankees by the Cubs during the 2021 season, he signed a two-year contract with the Yankees that included a club option for a third year and made him eligible for free agency after the 2022 campaign.

The Boston Red Sox selected Rizzo in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft after he had completed his high school career at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. He had already committed to attending Florida Atlantic University when he was picked and signed with a team for a signing bonus of $325,000. Rizzo was a member of the Red Sox organization throughout his time with the Greenville Drive, Salem Red Sox, Gulf Coast League Red Sox, and Portland Sea Dogs. Rizzo’s journey in the minor leagues began in 2007 with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox when he was only 17 years old and a member of the rookie class. His batting line was.286/.375/.429 in just 21 at-bats, and he had one home run and three RBIs.

In 2008, while he was only 18 years old, Rizzo was a member of the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League and played in class A. He had 83 opportunities at bat and hit.373/.402/.446 with 11 runs batted in but no home runs. In 2009, Rizzo was responsible for 12 home runs. In 2010, he split his time between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland, where he had a combined batting average of.260, an on-base percentage of.334, and a slugging percentage of.480. He also had 42 doubles, 25 home runs, and 100 RBIs to his name.

Rizzo attributes the increase in his power to the fact that he has loosened up his swing and is making greater use of his legs. On December 6, 2010, the Padres acquired Rizzo, along with Casey Kelly, Reymond Fuentes, and Eric Patterson from the Cubs in exchange for Adrián González, a first baseman who has been in three All-Star games. Rizzo was ranked as the third greatest prospect in the Red Sox organization, and the best prospect in terms of power hitting.

Prior to taking over as Rizzo’s manager at Salem, Kevin Boles served in the same capacity for González in the minor leagues. Boles stated, “Rizzo reminds me a lot of Adrián González … Although Rizzo is a larger youngster and has a bit more power than Adrian does, Adrian is a touch more of a contact hitter; yet, both of them had very similar playing styles… Anthony Rizzo was held in really high esteem by us. He has a lot of potential to become a good player. Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer anticipated that either Anthony Rizzo or Kyle Blanks would ultimately take over as the starting first baseman for the Padres in the big leagues. Rizzo was promoted to the big leagues after posting a batting average of.365, an OPS of 1.159, 16 home runs, and 63 runs batted in throughout 200 at-bats spread among 52 games played in Tucson.

Rizzo has been hailed as “the most celebrated Padres call-up” by the San Diego Union-Tribune since Roberto Alomar made his first appearance with the organization in 1988. The insufficient offensive productivity of the veterans playing first base for the Padres, as well as their poor defensive skills, was the impetus for Rizzo’s promotion. Rizzo made his debut for the Padres on June 9, 2011, against the Washington Nationals. In his first at-bat, he struck out, but he went on to hit a triple and score a run, which contributed to the Padres winning the game by a score of 7–3. On June 11, while playing against John Lannan, he hit his first career home run. After three games, he had a batting average of.333 with three hits, including a double, triple, and home run. He also showed patience by collecting four walks, which contributed to his on-base percentage of.667.

On July 21, 2011, Rizzo was relegated to Triple-A, while Blanks was promoted to a higher level of the minor leagues. Rizzo was having a tough time at the plate, with a batting average of only.143, one home run, and 36 strikeouts in 98 total at-bats. Hoyer noted that Rizzo “worked hard, never made excuses, and endeared himself to his teammates” during Rizzo’s first experience playing in the big leagues. On September 4, Rizzo was called up to the big leagues after ending the season at Tucson with a batting average of.331, 26 home runs, and 101 runs batted in while playing in 93 games.

By the end of his first season in San Diego, he had a batting average of just.141 and had struck out 46 times in 128 at-bats. According to Hoyer, Rizzo would be the primary first baseman for the Padres in 2012, with Jess Guzmán serving as the backup option at the position. However, once Yonder Alonso was acquired by the Padres in December 2011 in exchange for Mat Latos, he climbed up the team’s depth chart to a position higher than Rizzo had previously held.

Rizzo was given an invitation to participate in the Padres’ 2011 Spring training as a non-roster player for the big league team. He began the 2011 campaign with the Tucson Padres of the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. Rizzo had a batting average of.452 in his first 15 games, including six home runs and 24 RBIs. Rizzo’s debut in the Major Leagues could be delayed by the Padres owing to financial concerns imposed by the “Super Two” provision for salary arbitration eligibility, according to an article published in May 2011 by The San Diego Union-Tribune. This was despite the fact that the Padres were suffering from hitting limitations at the time. Rizzo’s continued participation in the Arizona Fall League is seen as beneficial by the organization because of his lack of experience playing above Double-A and his limited exposure to left-handed pitching.
