Anthony Joshua Bio

Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua OBE is a professional boxer who was born in the United Kingdom on October 15, 1989. He is a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, having held the championships of the World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization twice between the years of 2016 and 2021. This makes him a former undisputed world heavyweight champion. During that tenure, he was also the two-time reigning champion of the International Boxing Organization. From 2015 to 2016, he was the heavyweight champion of both the British and Commonwealth regions at the regional level.

Joshua won a silver medal at the 2011 World Championships while competing as an amateur in the super-heavyweight class. He did it while representing England. Additionally, he competed for Great Britain in the Olympic Games in 2012 and was awarded the gold medal. After becoming professional in 2013, he was honored with the Prospect of the Year award bestowed upon him by The Ring magazine in 2014. Fight of the Year was awarded after his triumph against Wladimir Klitschko in 2017 by both The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America. Joshua is the first English heavyweight boxer to accomplish this feat, following in the footsteps of James DeGale, who was the first English boxer to win both an Olympic gold medal and a world championship from a major professional sanctioning organization. Joshua is also the second English boxer to accomplish this feat after DeGale.

Joshua is currently listed as the world’s second-best active heavyweight by BoxRec third by The Ring and fourth by Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and ESPN in addition to being ranked as the world’s sixth-best active boxer, pound for pound, by BoxRec. These rankings are current as of October 2022. Since 2014, BoxRec has placed him inside the top 10 heavyweights in the world, and at the end of both 2016 and 2017, he finished the year as the number one heavyweight in the world. Joshua has a knockout-to-win rate of 88%, while his total knockout percentage in bouts for world heavyweight titles is 58%. Joshua has also won 58% of his wins via knockout. Joshua got his start in the sport of boxing in 2007, at the age of 18, after his cousin encouraged him to give it a go.

Joshua is considered a late beginner in the sport. Derek Chisora, a professional heavyweight, trains and fights out of the Finchley ABC club in Barnet, which is located in North London. Both in 2009 and 2010, Joshua was victorious in the Haringey Box Cup. Joshua also won the senior ABA Championships in 2010, in just his 18th contest, however, he subsequently declined an offer of £50,000 to become professional. Joshua won the championship in only his 18th fight. “Rejecting that offer of £50,000 was really simple. I didn’t start competing in order to make money; I do it because I want to win gold.” He also went on to triumph in the same competition the following year and take first place. Following his victory against Amin Isa at the GB Championships in the same year, he was crowned the British amateur champion and won a spot on the Great Britain Boxing team as a result of his performance on the domestic scene in 2010.

At the European Championships held in June of 2011, he defeated the German Eric Brechlin in a bout that lasted 23:16 and the Irishman Cathal McMonagle in a bout that lasted 22:10, but the Romanian southpaw Mihai Nistor stopped him after he received many standing counts. The Boxing Writers Club of Great Britain bestowed upon him the title of Amateur Boxer of the Year in the month of October 2011. Joshua finished his amateur career with a record of 40–3. Despite having won the silver medal in the world championships, Joshua was a relative unknown on the international stage until he competed in the Olympics in London in 2012. He was given a difficult opponent to face in the round of 16 of the super-heavyweight competition in the form of Cuban Erislandy Savón, who is rated No. 4 in the world by AIBA and is the nephew of Félix Savón, who has won three Olympic gold medals.

The outcome of the first fight for the local boxer, which was 17:16, was determined after he had fought through three challenging rounds. The majority of commentators were of the opinion that Savon had decisively won the fight, while some others were of the opinion that he deserved to win based on his performance. This verdict generated considerable debate. Joshua won his second fight, which was against Zhang Zhilei, who had won silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Joshua knocked out his taller opponent in the middle round of their fight, and his victory secured at least a bronze medal for him. Joshua faced the Kazakh boxer Ivan Dychko in the semi-final round of the competition.

Despite having a height disadvantage, Joshua prevailed over Dychko by a score of 13:11 to earn a spot in the Olympic final. In the final battle, Joshua faced Roberto Cammarelle of Italy, who is 32 years old and the defending Olympic champion. Cammarelle is also a previous world champion who won twice. After losing the first two rounds of the battle against Cammarelle, an opponent he had previously defeated the year before, Joshua began to get into the fight and was able to come back to even the scores after the third round, Joshua was declared the victor of the count-back competition, becoming the new Olympic champion. The judgment that was made in the end was called a “home decision” by many boxing experts, who voiced their disagreement with the verdict.

As recognition for his contributions to the sport of boxing, he was awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year’s Honours List of 2013. Joshua marked his sudden arrival on the world scene by defeating the reigning world and Olympic champion from Italy, Roberto Cammarelle, at the 2011 World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. He then went on to stop Erik Pfeifer of Germany in the semifinals before losing by a single point to a local boxer, Magomedrasul Majidov, who won the silver medal. Joshua’s victory marked his sudden arrival on the world scene. As a relative rookie to the highest level of the sport, Joshua clinched his spot for the Olympic Games in the super-heavyweight class on his way to the final. The Olympic Games will take place in 2012.
