Angela Merkel Bio

A German politician and scientist who served as chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021, Angela Dorothea Merkel was born on July 17, 1954. She is a former member of the German government. Having been a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), she had previously held the post of Leader of the Opposition from the years 2002 to 2005, as well as the position of Leader of the Christian Democratic Union from the years 2000 to 2018.

Merkel was the first woman to ever hold the position of chancellor in Germany. It was common practice to refer to Merkel as the de facto head of the European Union (EU) and the most powerful woman in the world when she was serving as chancellor of Germany. Since the year 2016, she has been often referred to as the dominant figure in the free world.

Her birthplace was Hamburg, which was located in West Germany. The relocation of her family to East Germany occurred while she was a little child. Following the completion of her doctoral studies in quantum chemistry in 1986, Merkel worked as a research scientist until the year 1989. After that, she joined politics in the aftermath of the Revolutions of 1989, and she temporarily held the position of deputy spokesperson for the first democratically elected government of East Germany with Lothar de Maizière as its leader.

Merkel won a seat in the Bundestag for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the year 1990, after the reunification of Germany. In 1991, Merkel was appointed to the position of Minister for Women and Youth, and in 1994, she was promoted to the position of Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety. Merkel was a protégé of Helmut Kohl, the head of the German government.

As a result of the CDU’s defeat in the federal election held in 1998, Merkel was elected to the position of general secretary of the party. Following that, she ended up being the first female head of the party, and then two years later, she became the first female leader of the opposition. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) were the three parties that made up the grand coalition that followed Merkel’s election as chancellor in 2005.

In addition to becoming the first woman to be elected chancellor, she was also the first chancellor of reunified Germany to have been brought up in the region that had once been known as East Germany. In the federal election that took place in 2009, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received the highest percentage of votes. As a result, Merkel established a coalition government with the Free Democratic Party (FDP), which was a more favorable partnership for the CDU than the grand coalition.

In the federal election that took place in 2013, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) established a second grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) after the Free Democratic Party (FDP) lost all of its representatives in the Bundestag. Merkel led the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to become the biggest party for the fourth time in the federal election that took place in 2017. This led to the creation of a third grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Merkel placed a strong focus on international cooperation in the framework of both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), as well as the growth of economic links between the two continents. When Merkel was serving as president of the European Council in 2008, she was an integral part of the process of negotiating the Treaty of Lisbon and the Berlin Declaration. The administration of Merkel was able to successfully handle both the global financial crisis of 2007–2008 and the European debt crisis.

She was the one who negotiated the stimulus package for the European Union in 2008, which intended to combat the Great Recession by focusing on public investment and spending on infrastructure. Merkel’s Energiewende program fostered the growth of renewable energy sources and finally led to the elimination of nuclear power in Germany. This was part of Merkel’s domestic policy initiative.

During her tenure as chancellor, she faced significant challenges, including the restructuring of the Bundeswehr, the reform of health care, the problem of migrants in Europe in the 2010s, and the COVID-19 epidemic. Merkel has resigned from her position as head of the CDU and has decided not to run for a fifth term as chancellor in the next electoral process in 2021.

Merkel’s ancestry dates back to both Germany and Poland. The guy who was her grandpa on her father’s side, Ludwik Kasner, was a German police officer of Polish descent. Following his captivity in France during World War I, he enlisted in the Blue Army and most likely fought against Germany. Relocating to Merkel’s hometown, where he once again served in the police force, he married Merkel’s grandmother Margarethe, who was a German from Berlin.

Kasner was the Germanization of the Polish name Kaźmierczak, which occurred in the year 1930. Her maternal grandparents were Willi Jentzsch, a politician from Danzig, and Gertrud Alma (née Drange), a daughter of Emil Drange, the city clerk of Elbing (now Elbląg, Poland). Merkel’s maternal grandparents were named after her. Merkel has made public statements about her Polish origin on several times since the middle of the 1990s, and she has defined herself as being a quarter Polish. However, it was not until 2013 that her Polish roots became more recognized.

A significant factor that contributed to the Kasner family’s relocation from West Germany to East Germany was their religious beliefs. Merkel’s father, who subsequently went on to study Lutheran theology at Heidelberg and Hamburg, was born into a family that had previously been Catholic. However, during her youth, the whole family converted to Lutheranism. Merkel’s paternal grandpa was originally a CatholicInng the year 1954 when Angela was only three months old, her father was appointed to the position of pastor at the church located in Quitzow.
