Andra Day was born Cassandra Monique Batie on December 30, 1984, but she is better known by her stage name, Andra Day. She is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She has been honored with a number of prestigious awards, such as the Grammy Award, the Children’s and Family Emmy Award, and the Golden Globe Award. In addition, she has been nominated for the Academy Award and the Daytime Emmy Award.
Her first studio album, titled Cheers to the Fall, was released the same year in 2015. The album was nominated for the Grammy Award in the category of Best R&B Album, and the track “Rise Up” was nominated for the Grammy Award in the category of Best R&B Performance.
In order to promote her song “Rise Up,” she gave a performance of the song on The View. As a result of her performance, she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award. Also in late 2015, Day starred in an advertisement for Apple TV alongside Stevie Wonder, who is in part credited with being responsible for her discovery. In the year 2020, Day quickly rose to become one of the most often requested performers by listeners of Jazz Joy and Roy Global Radio.
Day made her debut as an actress in 2021, portraying Billie Holiday in the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday, which was directed by Lee Daniels. For her performance, Day was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, and she was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. In recognition of his work on the film’s accompanying soundtrack, Day was presented with the Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. She was just three years old when her family made the trip to Southern California, and they settled in the Southeast part of San Diego, California.
She got her to start as a singer at the First United Methodist Church in Chula Vista, California when she was still very young. Day also started taking dance classes when she was 5 years old, and she continued doing so well into her 20s. She attributes the development of her passion for performing arts to her education at Valencia Park Elementary School, which she attended. At the age of twelve, Day was first exposed to the music of jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington, all of whom she considers to have been early influences on her voice.
Day received her education at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts in the neighborhood of Paradise Hills. She graduated from the school in the year 2003. On July 11, 2019, Day was inducted into the Delta Sigma Theta sorority as an honorary member of the organization. After graduating from high school, Day held over twenty various occupations, one of which was that of a children’s performer. In the year 2010, Day first came to Stevie Wonder’s attention when his then-wife, Kai Millard, discovered her while she was performing at a strip mall and brought her to his attention. Not long after that, Wonder, himself phoned Day.
Day took the call. The two individuals did not immediately create a partnership, but around one year later, they got back in touch with one another. At the time, Wonder was the one who introduced Day to producer Adrian Gurvitz. A few years later, Gurvitz would eventually cooperate with Day on the recording of the latter’s debut album. Day asked Jeffrey Evans to be her manager in 2013, and he accepted her request. In 2011, Day was given a development deal by Buskin Records, which was formed by Evans.
Her countless unplugged covers and mashups on her YouTube channel, the majority of which were taped in her sister’s bedroom in San Diego, were largely responsible for Later Day & Buskin landing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. Her renditions of songs by other artists, such as “Mamma Knows Best” by Jessie J, “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, and “Uprising” by Muse, are just a few examples. She was also famous for her mashups, such as the one that mixed “Big Poppa” by The Notorious B.I.G. and “Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye and the other that combined “He Can Only Hold Her” by Amy Winehouse and “Doo Wop (That Thing)” by Lauryn Hill.
The day was also collaborating with Gurvitz during this time period on the creation of over 40 unique tunes. Raphael Saadiq, Questlove, James Poyser, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and The Dap-Kings were among the other producers and contributors to what would eventually become her debut studio album. Other producers included DJ Jazzy Jeff. Day gave a performance at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, and it was there that filmmaker Spike Lee noticed them. He offered to direct the music video for her single “Forever Mine,” and she gladly accepted.
Day has also given performances at the 2015 BET Awards, the closing ceremonies of the 2015 Special Olympics, the Essence Music Festival, and on television shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Good Morning America, and a lot of other programs. She also gave a performance of “Mississippi Goddam” by Nina Simone for the soundtrack of the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?, which can be found on Netflix.
Her debut album recorded in a studio, titled Cheers to the Fall, was made available for purchase on August 28, 2015. It was greeted with praise from music critics, with NPR’s Katie Presley remarking that Day’s vocal possesses “Eartha Kitt’s unflappable confidence, Amy Winehouse’s effortless grasp of classic jazz, Billie Holiday’s access to raw emotion, and Adele’s range and pop sensibility.” At the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, where she also performed, the album was up for consideration for the award for Best R&B Album, while the song “Rise Up” was up for consideration for the award for Best R&B Performance.
Additionally, the album reached its highest position on the Billboard 200 chart at number 48. The tennis player Serena Williams appeared in an advertisement for Beats by Dre in September 2015, and the song “Rise Up” was featured in the campaign. Day collaborated with Stevie Wonder to perform a song called “Someday at Christmas” for an Apple TV commercial that aired in November and December of 2015. The song was performed by Day and Wonder.
