During the course of his career, the Latin pop singer known as El Potrillo, or The Colt, has sold more than thirty million CDs. During his debut appearance in 1976, he experienced a severe panic attack. He started off performing mainly traditional Mexican music but has since found greater popularity with his pop recordings.
Camila, America, Valentina, Emiliano, and Alex are his five children. From 1992 to 1998, he was married to America Guinart, then from 1998 to 2004, he was wed to Ximena Diaz. Alejandro Fernández was born in the Mexican city of Guadalajara in 1971. He initially pursued a career as an architect, but in 1991 he realized that music was his true calling. A lot has changed in Alejandro’s personal life from the days when he would sneak into his father’s concerts and belt out some traditional songs.
Music was always at the center of Alejandro Fernández’s life, as he was the son of Vicente Fernández Gómez, the famed Mexican singer better known as “El Rey de la Msica Ranchera”. Little Alejandro made his first public appearance during one of his father’s shows when he was only five years old. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when 5-year-old Alejandro had a huge panic attack after forgetting the words to the popular song “Alejandra” in front of thousands of onlookers. The concert’s happy vibe was quickly restored when Fernández’s father stepped onto the stage to console his son.
Alejandro Fernández was beloved by his whole Latin American fan base because of his expertise in traditional Mexican country music and other folk melodies. A knowledgeable person would say that his meteoric rise to the level of celebrity in which he presently basks occurred sometime around 1995.
One of Mexico’s most well-known musicians, Alejandro “El Potrillo” Fernández is a world-renowned singer. In the 1990s, he made a name for himself as a ranchero performer as the son of legend Vicente Fernández. In 1993, at the Lo Nuestro Awards, his debut album, simply named, was nominated for Regional Mexican Album of the Year. After recording for four years and releasing four albums, he finally ventured into Latin music with the smash hit Me Estoy Enamorando. Since then, he hasn’t been able to avoid the top 40. Eleven of his albums have made it into the U.S. Top 200, and nine of them have reached number one on the Latin Pop charts. First Latin Grammy Awards nominees included 2000’s “Entre Tus Brazos” for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
The number one album of 2004 was A Corazón Abierto, which fused traditional Mexican romantic balladry with Latin pop instrumentation. Dos Mundos, released in 2009, reached number one and went on to sell multiple platinum copies. In 2017, Rompiendo Fronteras earned a multi-platinum status for its innovative blend of ranchera music with Latin pop and reggaeton sounds. Hecho en Mexico, released in 2020, marked Fernandez’s official return to folk music after he had dabbled in pop for two decades. The album featured only norteno and mariachi recordings. It was number one on the Latin album and Mexico regional charts and number 65 on the overall Billboard 200.
The album was Fernández’s introduction to the world of popular music, and it was produced by the undisputed kings of Latin pop, Emilio Estefan, Jr. and Kike Santander. Me Estoy Enamorando debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums list, and its four singles “Si T Supieras,” “En el Jardn”, “No Sé Olvidar,” and “Yo Nac Por Amarte” all became number one on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
Before working with Estefan and Santander again on another pop-oriented chart-topper, Entre Tus Brazos, Fernández rejoined with veteran producer Pedro Ramrez in 1999 and returned to ranchera music on Mi Verdad, as if to reassure his fan base that he hadn’t abandoned his roots. For the years that followed, Fernández maintained his pattern of releasing albums that alternated between classic ranchera songs and more modern Latin pop. In addition, he published his first greatest hits album, 15 Aos de Éxitos, and began frequently releasing live-in-concert CDs.
Once his seven-album deal with Sony expired, Fernández moved on to Fonovisa. Sony then attempted to release an album of his unreleased material. 6,000 copies of the record were confiscated after Fernández filed a lawsuit. In 2009, he released two albums under his new label titled Dos Mundos on the same day; one was more Latin pop and the second was more traditional ranchera and mariachi music. The subsequent tour inspired the live CD Dos Mundos: Revolución.
Fernández continued his tradition of teamwork by featuring guest appearances from a wide range of artists on his subsequent album, including the Colombian band Morat and the Peruvian singer/songwriter Gianmarco. The legendary Joss Favela contributed four tunes, and Mario Dom contributed two. Rompiendo Fronteras, released in 2017, took a multicultural stance in response to the political situation of its time by providing ranchers and ballads with contemporary pop production and rhythms.
It debuted at the top of the Latin Pop and Top Latin Albums charts and ultimately debuted in the Top 200. In 2020, Fernández released his first album consisting solely of mariachi tunes, titled Hecho en México. In Mexico, “Caballero” was Fernández’s breakthrough hit, peaking at No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart. Duets with his father appeared on the track “Menti,” while Christian Nodal contributed to the track “Mas No Puedo.”
