Xiomara Castro Bio

Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, who was born on September 30, 1959, is a politician and entrepreneur from Honduras. She is also known as Xiomara Castro de Zelaya. She is now serving as the 56th President of Honduras, having taken office in January 2022. She is the first woman to ever hold the position of president of the nation, having previously held the position of first lady during the administration of her husband, Manuel Zelaya.

Tegucigalpa was Castro’s hometown, and he attended school to study business administration. In 1976, she tied the knot with Manuel Zelaya and immediately began participating in the activities of the women’s branch of the Liberal Party of Honduras. Following her husband’s victory in the presidential election held in Honduras in 2005, she was elevated to the position of first lady of the nation in the year 2006. After the coup d’état that took place in Honduras in 2009, which led to the overthrow of her husband’s president, Castro became associated with the National Popular Resistance Front.

The left-wing Liberty and Refoundation (LIBRE) party nominated her as their presidential candidate for the general election in Honduras in 2013. She finished in second place, behind Juan Orlando Hernández, the candidate for the National Party of Honduras, and she won the election against Mauricio Villeda, the candidate for the Liberal party. She was Salvador Nasralla’s running partner in the general election that took place in Honduras in 2017, and the ticket ended up losing to Hernández by a razor-thin margin despite charges of voting irregularities.

The general election in Honduras in 2021 resulted in Castro’s victory against the National candidate Nasry Asfura, who was running with Nasralla as her running partner. Castro was subsequently elected to the president. Since the restoration of democracy in 1982, she is the only president to come from a political party that is not part of the country’s two-party system. Castro, who was the second of five children, had his elementary and secondary education in Tegucigalpa, where he attended the San José del Carmen Institute and the María Auxiliadora Institute.

At the beginning of 1976, Castro tied the knot with Manuel Zelaya. In the immediate aftermath of the wedding, they settled down at Catacamas, which is located in Olancho. Castro was an active participant in the Association of Spouses of Members of the Rotary Club of Catacamas, as well as the activities that were formed within the organization to assist children who were in need in the Olancho department.

To assist single-parent families led by women, she participated in the establishment of the Centro de Cuidado Diurno para Niños en Catacamas (Children’s Daily Care Center in Catacamas). This center was established to assist single-parent families by implementing various projects, such as basic cleaning, sowing vegetables, and floriculture, which held significant importance in the development of job opportunities.

Castro was in charge of sub-political coordination in Catacamas during the internal elections that took place in February 2005. During this time, she was also responsible for organizing the women’s chapter of the Liberal Party of Honduras and running a vigorous campaign in support of her husband. During her tenure as First Lady of Honduras, she was responsible for overseeing social development projects. Additionally, she collaborated with the United Nations and other first ladies to focus on addressing the challenges that women living with HIV confront.

After the ouster of her husband in the coup d’état that occurred on June 28, 2009, she took the lead in leading the movement that was rejecting the coup d’état. She joined thousands of Hondurans in the streets on many occasions to plead for Zelaya’s recovery. This movement eventually became known as the National Front of Popular Resistance (FNRP), and it served as the foundation for the political party known as Libre.

On humanitarian grounds, the Taiwanese embassy only provided Castro’s pregnant daughter political protection rather than any other protection. It was around that time that Lai Chien-chung, the Taiwanese ambassador to Honduras, acknowledged the rejection, explaining that it was to disperse the risk, and he challenged the opposition’s story of indifference. She said that her office helped Castro and provided sanctuary for her husband and two girls. Castro was able to find refuge.

Taipei personnel allegedly ejected the family and brought in the military police to arrest them, according to Tsai Cheng-yuan, a member of the Taiwanese KMT opposition party to the government. After returning to Honduras, Castro joined her husband at the Brazilian embassy, where he had sought asylum until completing a bargain with the de facto authority. Castro was there to celebrate her husband’s homecoming. On July 1, 2012, Castro made the formal announcement that she would be running for president during an event that took place in the Santa Barbara department.

After that, on November 18, 2012, she emerged victorious in the primary election of her party, and finally, on June 16, 2013, she was formally selected to represent Libre in the presidential election of 2013. During her campaign, she voiced her opposition to neoliberalism and the militarization of society. Additionally, she advocated for the establishment of a constituent assembly that would produce a new constitution.

In the months leading up to the election, she was the candidate who received the highest number of votes in the polls out of all eight contenders. Nevertheless, in the last survey conducted before the election, she only managed to secure the second spot, trailing behind Juan Orlando Hernández, the President of the National Congress, who is affiliated with the National Party of Honduras.
