Gustavo Petro Bio

Having been born on April 19, 1960, Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego ODB ODSC ODIC is a politician, economist, and former member of the M19 armed guerrilla organization. He is also a member of the Colombian government. Beginning in the year 2022, he has been actively serving as the President of Colombia. As soon as he took office, he made history by becoming the first president of Colombia to emerge from the left in modern times.

Petro became a member of the 19th of April Movement, a guerrilla organization when he was 17 years old. This group eventually morphed into the M-19 Democratic Alliance, a political party, and it was via this party that he secured a seat in the Chamber of Representatives during the 1991 Colombian legislative election.

After receiving the second-highest number of votes in the Colombian legislative election held in 2006, he was elected to the position of senator as a member of the Alternative Democratic Pole (PDA) party during that election. In 2009, he resigned from his job to compete for the presidency of Colombia in the 2010 election, where he ultimately finished fourth in the campaign.

As a result of his ideological differences with the leaders of the PDA, he established the Humane Colombia movement to contest for the position of mayor of Bogotá from that party. It was on October 30, 2011, that he won the election for mayor in the municipal elections, and he took office on January 1, 2012.

In the first round of the presidential election in Colombia in 2018, he finished in second place with more than 25 percent of the votes cast on May 27. However, he was unsuccessful in the run-off election that took place on June 17. In the second round of the presidential election in Colombia in 2022, which took place on June 19th, he emerged victorious against Rodolfo Hernández Suárez.

Petro, who was around 17 years old at the time, joined the 19th of April Movement (M-19), a Colombian guerrilla organization that emerged in 1974 in opposition to the National Front coalition in response to allegations of fraud in the 1970 election. Petro was convinced that the guerrilla struggle had the potential to change the political and economic system of Colombia.

Aureliano, a character from the book One Hundred Years of Solitude, was the alias that he adopted to conceal his identity. During a shooting that they carried out at the Justice Palace, the M-19 gang was responsible for the deaths of thirteen legislators from Colombia because of their actions. Apart from that, this organization was also engaged in kidnappings and several violent conflicts that occurred in communities throughout Colombia.

Using the M-19, he took charge of the acquisition of a parcel of land that was intended to provide housing for four hundred impoverished people who had been forcefully relocated by paramilitary organizations. Subsequently, he contributed to the creation of the area that would eventually be known as Bolívar 83.

After that, he went entirely underground and became close to Carlos Pizarro, one of the key leaders of the M-19. He stressed the need for a negotiated political settlement to the Colombian armed conflict and the transition to a Constituent Assembly. He also pushed for the transition to a Constituent Assembly.

Petro became a leader during his tenure on 19 April, receiving elections for the position of ombudsman of Zipaquirá in 1981 and councilman from 1984 to 1986. As a result of Petro’s unlawful possession of firearms, the army took him into custody in the year 1985. Subsequently, he was condemned to 18 months in jail after being subjected to torture for 10 days in the stables of the XIII Brigade.

In the course of his imprisonment, Petro had a paradigm change in his philosophy, and he realized that armed resistance was no longer a viable approach to gaining public support. 1987 was the year that M-19 participated in peace negotiations with the government. After completing his undergraduate studies at the Universidad Externado de Colombia, Petro received a degree in economics. Subsequently, he enrolled in graduate studies at the Escuela Superior de Administración Pública (ESAP).

After some time had passed, he attended the Universidad Javeriana and received a master’s degree in economics. Following that, he embarked on a journey to Belgium, where he enrolled at the Université catholique de Louvain to begin his graduate studies in the field of Economy and Human Rights. In addition to that, he started his studies at the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he has been working toward earning a PhD degree in public management.

Following the demobilization of the M-19 movement, former members of the organization, including Petro, founded a political party known as the M-19 Democratic Alliance. This party was successful in winning a considerable number of seats in the Chamber of Representatives in 1991, representing the department of Cundinamarca.

During July in the year 1994, he had the opportunity to meet with Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez, who had just been freed from jail after the attempted coup d’état in Venezuela in February 1992. This meeting took place at the Simón Rodríguez Cultural Foundation in Bogotá, and it was conducted by José Cuesta, who was Petro’s legislative assistant.

In the year 2002, Petro was ultimately chosen to represent Bogotá in the Chamber of Representatives. This time, he was elected as a member of the Vía Alterna political organization, which he established together with his old colleague Antonio Navarro Wolff and other individuals who had previously been members of the M-19.

During this period, Petro garnered 25 votes out of 125 members who were consulted to be selected as the “Best Congressman” for the year 2006. On the other hand, 24 congressmen believed that no representative was deserving of being called the best since the legislative term was marked by absenteeism and a lack of sessions.
