The Pinnaduwage Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva was born on July 29, 1997, and is a professional cricketer who plays for the Sri Lanka cricket team in white ball cricket as a bowling rounder. His full name is Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva. He spins with his right arm and left leg. In July of 2017, Hasaranga made his debut on the international stage for Sri Lanka. Chaturanga de Silva, his older brother, is another player who has competed for the national squad.
Hasaranga created history when he took the first-ever hat trick for Sri Lanka in a T20 World Cup during the 2021 edition of the event. He also made history when he became the first Sri Lankan in an ODI debut to take a hat-trick. Both of these accomplishments put Hasaranga in the record books. Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva began his cricket career at Richmond College in Galle. This is also where he received his education. In 2016, he was a Sri Lankan under-19 cricket squad member who competed in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh.
At 16, he played as a frontline seam bowler for the Richmond College cricket team and even opened the bowling. However, after seeing a demonstration given by his instructor, Lanka de Silva, who instructed him to bowl leg spin, he decided to convert to bowling leg spin instead of off-spin. Soon after, he became a leg-spinner like his mentor before him to emulate his success.
After seeing Hasaranga’s exceptional arm speed, the coach was the one who saw the potential in him to turn him into a leg-spinner. He also participated in a pace-to-spin bowling transformation workshop and an age group 50 over local competition at 17, where he collected 28 wickets in only six matches. Both of these experiences occurred when he was 17 years old.
Hasaranga competed in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament for the first time on November 30, 2015, marking his promotion to List A. In December 2015, he was given a spot on Sri Lanka’s team to compete in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup the following year. During the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, he was responsible for seven wickets, including a match-winning bowling effort of 3/34 against England in the tournament’s quarter-final, which enabled Sri Lanka to advance to the competition’s semi-final stage.
On February 26, 2016, he made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club in the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament. At the annual awards ceremony of Sri Lanka Cricket in November 2017, Hasaranga was honored to be named the most promising player in domestic cricket for the 2016–17 season.
He became well-known for his all-around performance during the 2016–17 domestic First Class season, during which he scored 586 runs, including a century, at an average of just under 40 with a strike rate of 93. Also, he took 15 wickets, including a five-wicket haul. Also averaged just under 40 runs per wicket. On November 11, 2017, during the 2017–18 Bangladesh Premier League, he first appeared in the Twenty20 format for Sylhet Sixers.
Hasaranga was selected to be a member of Colombo’s team to compete in the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March of 2018. The following month, he was again selected to play for Colombo in the 2018 Super Provincial One-Day Tournament. It was announced in August 2018 that he will play for Dambulla in the 2018 SLC T20 League. Hasaranga was the top run-scorer for the Colombo Cricket Club during the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament. He scored a total of 765 runs throughout nine games.
It was announced in March 2019 that he will play for Galle in the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. In October 2020, the Jaffna Stallions selected him in the first draft round to compete in the first-ever Lanka Premier League. As a result of his seventeen wickets, he was awarded the title of player of the tournament. Hasaranga was added to the Royal Challengers Bangalore roster in August 2021 so that they could compete in the second phase of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates.
On September 20, 2021, he played his first game in the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Kolkata Knight Riders. Following the players’ draft for the 2021 Lanka Premier League, which took place in November 2021, he was allowed to compete for the Jaffna Kings. The Royal Challengers Bangalore acquired Hasaranga at the 2022 Indian Premier League Auction.
The Manchester Originals acquired him in April 2022 for the 2022 season of The Hundred in England. Kandy Falcons, competing in the third season of the Lanka Premier League, decided to take a chance on him and sign him in July 2022. Hasaranga was acquired by Quetta Gladiators in 2022 and played in the PSL 8 that year. Hasaranga has been selected to play in Sri Lanka’s One-Day International (ODI) matches against Zimbabwe as part of the team’s series. On July 2, 2017, he competed in his first One-Day International for Sri Lanka, a match against Zimbabwe.
He became the youngest bowler to take a hat-trick on debut in a one-day international (ODI) when he did it in his first match against Zimbabwe. He did it by taking the last three wickets of the innings in three successive deliveries. He also became the third player in One-Day International history to debut and take a hat-trick behind Bangladesh’s Taijul Islam and South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada. He also made history by being the first leg-spinner of one-day internationals to take a hat-trick.
