It’s Vern. An American football player who played defensive end for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL) for a total of twelve seasons, Wayne Den Herder was born on November 28, 1948. He is a retired professional football player who played for the Dolphins. As a member of the Dolphins, he participated in three Super Bowls. As a collegiate football player, he was a member of the Central Dutch. The College Football Hall of Fame inducted him into its hall of fame in the year 1996.
The high school that Den Herder attended was located in Sioux Center, Iowa. Although he did not play football during his first two years of high school, he went on to become a standout during his junior and senior years. Not only was he a standout in basketball, but he also spent his last two years playing football. Central College, located in Pella, Iowa, was the institution that Den Herder decided to attend due to its well-known reputation for providing an education in the sciences and its association with the Reformed Church in America.
It was with a chemistry major that he received his degree with honors. At a height of 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), he was the starting center for Central’s basketball team for four years and established the record for the most points scored throughout the school’s history. In football, he was a defensive end for the team. Harry Smith, an anchor for CBS, was a member of the team. In 1968, 1969, and 1970, Den Herder was on the All-Iowa Conference team. 1970 was the year of his senior year.
In addition to being awarded All-America, college division, by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the Football Coaches Association, and the Associated Press, he was also the team captain and the Most Valuable Player of the Iowa Conference. Additionally, he was coached at Central Iowa by Ron Schipper, who was a member of the College Football Hall of Fame himself. Schipper passed away.
It’s wonderful to be able to think, “I was good enough,” while I’m watching the games on Sunday. My performance was satisfactory. Within that league, I was a player. While I was leaving the game, I had a pleasant taste in my mouth. Even though I played for as long as I possibly could, I was allowed to leave whenever I desired. Not only did he unofficially lead the Dolphins in sacks in 1972 with 101⁄2, but Den Herder also unofficially led the club in 1975 with a career-high 11 sacks. This is because the National Football League did not officially track sack statistics until 1982[4].
The year 1972 saw him get the All-AFC honor. Because Stanfill had only recently topped the prior number just two weeks earlier, he unofficially equaled Bill Stanfill for the most sacks in a single game with five in October 1973. Stanfill had just surpassed the previous total. Additionally, throughout the 1978 and 1979 seasons, he had nine sacks, which was the unofficial record for the Dolphins. With an unofficial total of 641⁄2 sacks, he holds the fourth spot on the record of sacks for the Dolphins.
Den Herder not only had a game in 1973 in which he had five sacks, but he also had two games in which he recorded four sacks: August 22, 1974, against the Buffalo Bills, and November 11, 1979, against the Baltimore Colts. In 1979, the National Football League selected him as the Most Valuable Player for the Dolphins. In his coaching career, Don Shula referred to him as “one of the most dependable players I’ve ever coached.”
Den Herder first decided to retire in 1981, and he went back to his hometown to work on a cattle grazing farm. He did this because he was aware that the game had progressed toward more passing-oriented methods that were not in sync with his abilities to halt runs. Despite this, Coach Shula requested him to play for the Dolphins for one more season after the team’s roster had shrunk as a result of injuries. Following his participation in Super Bowl XVII, he decided to call it quits.
Following the completion of his second retirement from the sport of football, Den Herder relocated back to Sioux Center, Iowa, where he began a career as a farmer, concentrating on the cultivation of maize and soybeans. He is a doting father to two children and is married to his wife. When President Barack Obama held a ceremony at the White House to celebrate the 1972 Perfect Season Dolphins, he could not attend the event with the other team members because he was involved in a harvest.
During the celebration, he and other former Dolphins were commemorating the first season in the league’s history to finish without losing a single game. The National Football League (NFL) and ESPN celebrated the 100th season in the history of the league, during which the NFL chose that club to be the finest NFL squad of all time. The Dolphins’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 22 served as the focal point upon which the team gathered.
During the celebration of that distinction, Den Herder said, “The Dolphins decided that we should celebrate that, so they brought all of us in from that 1972 team to celebrate that honor.” It was a fortunate coincidence that it occurred at the period when coach Shula was celebrating his 90th birthday. Because we were invited, we went to his 90th birthday celebration, which was held at the residence of one of his friends, and we surprised him.
